Blazers claim former University of Washington player Justin Holiday off waivers

Justin Holiday, a former University of Washington player, will join the Trail Blazers after they claimed him off waivers, the team announced Friday.

Holiday was waived by Cleveland on Wednesday, and Portland got him during the 48-hour waiver period. The Blazers say Holiday will join them Sunday, when they practice at their Tualatin facility before leaving for a Monday preseason game at Sacramento.

Holiday, 23, is a 6-foot-6 guard/forward who gained the reputation of being a good defender for the Huskies. In four years at Washington, he averaged 5.3 points and 3.6 rebound, including 10.5 points and 5.2 rebounds as a senior in 2010-11. He is the younger brother of Philadelphia starting point guard Jrue Holiday.

Holiday went undrafted in the 2011 and played in Belgium last season. He played one preseason game for Cleveland, getting three points, an assist and a rebounds in 12 minutes against Milwaukee.

By claiming him off waivers, the Blazers picked up Holiday's Cleveland contract as a training camp invitee. He is not guaranteed a spot on the Blazers' 15-man opening day roster.

With the signing, the Blazers have 20 players on their training camp roster, although Elliot Williams is out for the season, rookie guard Will Barton has been largely inactive because of a hamstring injury and center J.J. Hickson sat out Friday's game at Phoenix because of a bruised rib.

...not sure what the purpose of this move would be?! :dunno:

We just lost Elliot Williams for the season....just a guess

having a SG/SF who isn't Nolan Smith, Sasha or Adam Morrison probably would be a reason.

Although I'm not sure if he's the answer.

My inside source says that Mrs. Holiday is taking a day off from childrearing and is employing Olshey as babysitter.

Paul Allen likes to have one Seattle player on the team.

What if they got him to just stash him in Boise?

Wouldn't you want to take a chance on someone with more upside than Holiday then? There were plenty of players in this and last year's drafts that could have made great NBDL stashes. If that was the goal of the signing... why Holiday?

Babbit is the Larry Bird of the NBDL!

Do you think the NBA needs to revise their minor league system?

I mean, the NBDL was only supposed to be the "first step" towards a minor league, right?

How cool would it be if the NBDL actually became a farm system for young prospects, instead of the University of Kentucky...

It just seems like the NBDL is where all the Euroleague rejects team up with the "rough around the edges" NBA prospects. It'd be nice to get a real minor league system in place.

...rumor has it that "they" are working on this to be the crescendo of SterNBA's lasting legacy :dunno:

The Blazers should be an injured player exception for Williams.

Does that mean that Ammo is a lock to make the roster?
