Blazers getting a G league team, playing at U of P. HCP hired as G-League janitor

300 bucks for a tryout is cheaper than hiring an agent to get you a contract. You get a roster spot and bypass the agent fee and you should feel pretty good about it.

Tryout for the team.

Date: Saturday, September 16, 2023

Location: Blazers Training Facility: 7325 SW Childs Rd, Portland, OR 97224

Time: 11:00a.m-1:00p.m.

Check-In: doors open at 10:15a.m.

Cost: $300

Eligibility: To be eligible to play in the League, a player must (i) turn 18 years of age on or before October 15, 2023, and (ii) not have participated in collegiate basketball activities after October 15, 2023

I'm 5'10" on a good hair day. Given the Blazers seeming aversion to height, I am going to tryout for Center.

Do it by invite then. $300 doesn't weed out people with money who aren't serious.
We don't know that there aren't also invites. We only know that the open tryout has a $300 buy-in, as well as a 60-participant limit. Yes, it's possible that some non-serious attendees might pay the money just for the experience with no intention to actually participate. But it's significantly more likely that without the buy-in, the 60-person-limit would be quickly filled/flooded by numpties who have absolutely no business being there because there's no reason for them not to.

Fair point.

But that has to be balanced against the likelihood of cash-strapped guys with legit talent being omitted. I suppose you could argue they can always find someone to lend them $300... The better way to solve problems like that is have tiers of tryouts, like a US team selection process. Have a few low level scouts or coaches oversee the initial sessions and promote the deserving players to the selection stage. You can even make it a regional approach that way, pulling in, say, Southern Oregon players that would have no incentive to travel otherwise. If they're good enough for the final stage, pay their way up here.

The goal should be to get more people (and the broader region as supporters) involved, not weed them out preemptively.

I imagine they aren't interested in investing that many resources into this.

The odds that a rando is gonna walk in off the streets and Roy Hobbs it up is extremely slim. Anyone who is realistically good enough to play in the Gatorade League will probably have an agent and enough cash to pay the fee.

I also think that allowing 24 hour fitness gym stars to tryout is not going to help increase public interest in the team. The most likely path to involving the local fans is having names we recognize on the roster and cheap ticket prices.

I hope some forgotten former AAU stud who recently completed incarceration shows up at the tryout next month and makes you eat your words!!

Like how undrafted guys never make it in the league? Oh, wait... You just don't know without the benefit of hindsight. Go a step further and look at someone like Jalen Brunson. Not much of a prospect, developed into a very capable starter, then got his own team and turned into a legit star. The talent must have been there all along, but few of us were aware of it.

People root for their hometown guys to make it, and it will be news if those borderline talents are getting a shot at trying out. There are plenty of Eubanks out there that wouldn't have had careers if not for being in the right place at the right time.

First, sell jerseys for the team. Second, select a few fans from the stands each game who are wearing those jerseys.

Third, sign them to 10-minute contracts, and put them in the game.

If some random guy from Portland made that squad, I would totally tune in!! I could give a shit about some guy from Europe or D3 ball. I’d offer to make the local kid highlights in fact!

Not only did I get an NBA League Pass subscription for being a Blazer season ticket holder, got another one for being a Remix season ticket holder.

Here was the view as well from the preseason seats they comped me. They have not played a game yet and I am already happy with my purchase!

You got two nba league pass subscriptions individually included in your purchases?
