The Trail Blazers have finally received a dose of good news surrounding their injury-depleted roster.

The NBA has awarded the Blazers a hardship exception, giving them the option of signing a 16th player to the roster for a short-term basis. Teams are eligible for the exception after four players on a roster miss at least three games and are expected to miss two additional weeks.

The Blazers became eligible after their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, when Greg Oden missed his third consecutive game because of a fractured patella in his left knee, and were awarded the exception by the NBA on Sunday.

“We’re surveying our options,” said Tom Penn, the Blazers’ vice president of basketball operations. “We’ve been looking at free agents that are out there and available ... and we’re going to keep our options open. We may or may not ultimately sign a player.”

The Blazers, who first encountered injuries during the offseason, are down to nine healthy players. Four rotation players, including two starters, have or will miss significant stretches of the season.

It would seem the Blazers would choose to use their exception, at the very least, to add a healthy body to practices. There’s also the long-shot chance they might unearth a diamond in the rough.

If the Blazers exercise the exception, they would sign a player to a non-guaranteed contract and he would be eligible to remain with the team until one of their four most-recent injured players returns. Essentially, the Blazers would keep any player they sign until Rudy Fernandez (back) or Nicolas Batum (shoulder) returns.

Fernandez, who is expected to miss four-to-six weeks after undergoing a microdiscectomy procedure last week, would most likely return soonest

Hmm, who is available?

Stromile Swift?
Robert Swift?
Desmond Mason?
Melvin Ely?

A big or a SF seems to be the best option.

Whoever it is, as mentioned, it would be a nonguaranteed contract. At first, I thought of someone like Stackhouse, or along those lines, but there's really not abig reason for him to come in and practice for a month, and then get waived. I'd give Robert Swift alook, for the hell of it as another big body. Or Steven Hill.

Rashard McCants or Wally Sczerbiak for a scoring SF.

Robert Swift would be dope. fit in with the portland tatoo culture and get some 'tude on this team!

LOL, I just googled the Mountain Man to see if he was on a roster somewhere...apparently not.

Slomile swift would be good but he's such a stupid player but pretty physical.

Eek! Please no one that is likely to get immediately injured...that would be bad juju if our injury exception player got injured.

Find the absolute best perimeter defender in the world, that is currently not in the NBA, and sign him ASAP

Maybe Brandon's old teammate from UW, Bobby Jones? Currently playing in Italy.

Look out league, we're on our way back!

Can we sign a Coach to replace the one we have even temporarily? :devilwink:

I think we need to consolidate. Why the hell do we need 9 players? We need to make a 3 for 1 trade so our "behind the bench" players are happy. (better view)

I would have to imagine they might pull the trigger on this real quick. The other thing being, if they are allowed to bring in a player, it might provide more freedom on the trade front. So if we bring in another body on the front line, then perhaps it's not so hard on the team to move a point guard out due to body count.

The new RLEC!!!!!

"We may or may not ultimately sign a player.”

Jesus Fucking Christ

Yes, THAT'S what I like to hear!!!!

Lets hold onto "Greg Oden's Expiring Injury Exception" so we can really turn the screws on Memphis at the trade deadline.

What about Dwayne Jones? He's a 6'11" forward/center that is averaging 18.0 PPG, 13.3 RPG and 2.2 BPG. His FG% is 0.659 and he's shooting 0.789 from the line. He's strung together 7 straight double-doubles - including 27 PTS, 24 REB and 4 BLK last night. He's also averaging 5.3 ORB/G.

Yeah, it's just the D-League, but those are solid numbers and he has good size for playing the 4 or 5. He hasn't really had a bad game all season and put up numbers nearly as good last season (16.9 PPG, 13.7 RPG, 0.608 FG%).
