Blazers Granted Injury Exception

What about Dwayne Jones? He's a 6'11" forward/center that is averaging 18.0 PPG, 13.3 RPG and 2.2 BPG. His FG% is 0.659 and he's shooting 0.789 from the line. He's strung together 7 straight double-doubles - including 27 PTS, 24 REB and 4 BLK last night. He's also averaging 5.3 ORB/G.

Yeah, it's just the D-League, but those are solid numbers and he has good size for playing the 4 or 5. He hasn't really had a bad game all season and put up numbers nearly as good last season (16.9 PPG, 13.7 RPG, 0.608 FG%).

I've seen him play at summer league the last couple years, and I was always impressed by his physicality.

Its easy to Poo Poo D league players, but the facts are some of them turn into pretty damn good players. Eddie House was a D Leaguer. Raefer Alston was a D leaguer. Miki Moore. Shannon Brown. Gems are out there. You just got to go looking for one.

He's always been very good defensively and on the glass. He was very raw offensively in college and a poor FT shooter. He's vastly improved his FT shooting and continues to rebound like a madman. Other than put backs and dunks, he wouldn't need to score a lot to help the Blazers. He could be exactly what we need - a tough physical presence in the paint and on the glass - when Joel is out of the game. In fact, his game is quite similar to Joel's (limited, but efficient offense, great rebounding and interior defense).

It's not like we're looking for a long term solution. Just someone who can come in and help out until some of our injured players come back. Thanks to the way the injury exception works, it's a great opportunity to bring up someone from the D-League and see how they compete at the next level. It's extremely low risk, and who knows, you might find someone who is good enough to stick around a while.

A lot of guys are in the D-League because they are very limited offensively and would have trouble scoring in the NBA. That's why I think a guy like Dwayne Jones is worth a look. Defense and rebounding tend to translate better to the next level than scoring. There are a lot of great scores in college who have trouble getting off their shot in the NBA, but guys who are great rebounders in college tend to be at least very good rebounders in the NBA.

CIP mentioned Malik Rose and Chris Mihm.. Can Rose still play?

Is there a list out there of available FAs?

I'm sold. Nice size, good rebounder, awesome FG% means he doesn't take shots he can't make. He's 26, which is really just entering the prime years of his career.

I hear Darius Miles is trying to get back in the league :devilwink:

Fuck it, why not? He's already a nine million a year cap hit on our books for the year, and it's arguable that he'd be any worse than Martell Webster.

Of course I'm kidding, but just barely.

I would have to imagine they might pull the trigger on this real quick. The other thing being, if they are allowed to bring in a player, it might provide more freedom on the trade front. So if we bring in another body on the front line, then perhaps it's not so hard on the team to move a point guard out due to body count.

Yeah, it would beat the hell out of having to waive one of the injured guys and then go out hunting for somebody, especially if he ended up being a complete washout. In which case you lose a prospect you might be marginally interested in (like Patty Mills), you haven't really helped your cause, and now you are worse off than where you were at the start of the process.

Find the absolute best perimeter defender in the world, that is currently not in the NBA, and sign him ASAP

He'd already be playing in the NBA. Have you watched a Euro or NBDL game? :ghoti:

Probably worth a look at this point, considering it's basically a zero in terms of financial risk outside of the non-guaranteed contract.

I'd vote for Steven of Nazareth. If for nothing else than to be a practice banger. That way, the team could at least practice 5-on-5.

An excellent opportunity to give a new face a shot at the PG spot.

It's painfully obvious it's a much bigger question mark this year than last.

Last year all 3 PG's showed promise as keepers but now only Bayless seems to be even worth keeping at all.

Miller and Blake have been inept at best and it's clear neither will ever be our PG of the future.

Here are the rebounding leaders in the D-League, for anyone interested. Rod benson?

I don't follow the D-League, but I think that picking the biggest/most athletic guy who's producing at a reasonable level down there is the guy we should consider going with.

Get a guy who will practice hard and who can play 4 or 5 minute stretches when Joel is in foul trouble without making the team to go small across the board.

Ed O.

You just described the player BNM was talking about, Dwayne Jones.

Sounds like a reasonable stop-gap. He's at least got some NBA experience and doesn't appear to have been a total bust (from a rebounding perspective at least) when he logged 400+ minutes for the Cavs a couple of seasons ago.

On the contrary, everything would probably come up aces.

I thought I heard in a telecast that Miami might release James Jones? He signed a contract last year but only his first two years are guaranteed. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3479918).

That would be awesome if we could get Jones. That would completely turn around the season. He liked playing here. He got along with the others. And we played our best ball when he was in the lineup. It would be a godsend if we could get him.

Heat 115, Raptors 95
FYI Couldn't find the link but found this on Hoopshype.

Observations from Tuesday's 115-95 victory over the Raptors at AmericanAirlines Arena:

There is an undeniable sense that change is in the air, and for more than the benching of Mario Chalmers, the waiving of Shavlik Randolph and the recent deep freeze of Daequan Cook.
So, in that vein, perhaps Jermaine O'Neal for Tracy McGrady might get new legs, with McGrady getting a test run Tuesday from the Rockets. The Heat's trade exception would allow for Luis Scola or Brian Cook to also be included in such a deal, to provide a replacement in the power rotation (perhaps the reason for the waiving of Randolph?).

Keep in mind, as well, that the trade exception the Heat holds from last February's Shawn Marion-O'Neal trade also would accommodate Blazers point guard Steve Blake, a player who long has interested the Heat. The trade exception would allow the Heat to then include Daequan Cook or another lower-priced player in such a deal with Portland.

So, trade Blake for James Jones, and then use the injury exception to sign Dwayne Jones? Is that the (Kingspeed exclusive) consensus?

Sorry, I have had a couple of beers and was shocked I didn't see this anywhere lol but I just missed it.

Sorry mods.
