Holy shit

Wow! Talk about giving the new owner a layup reason to clean house on the basketball ops side of our team. Not to mention the current front office not having made the playoffs one time in their 4 years in charge of the roster and the fact that their an extension of the previous front office that got to the conference finals once only to be swept out.

I will seriously be surprised if this group is in place for the draft.

I wonder what the rule is that they violated, it's not like he wasn't 18.

Serge and Mike are not extensions of Olshey. They were hired *after* Neil was let go.

If there's four things you can depend on in life it's life, death, taxes and fans overreacting to something when they don't have the entire story.

This is like when the Timberwolves were punished... for taking Joe Smith.

In both cases, isn't having the player punishment enough?

The Twolves situation was significantly worse, as they were fined 3.5 million and lost picks. Being fine 100K isn't really much of a fine.

So...What did they do and why was it illegal?

Yes, the suspensions are the story here, not the fine.
But ... you're suspending assistant GMs two weeks at the end of the regular season and before the offseason work really gets going. I don't know what Oliva does, but Schmitz's speciality always has been international scouting. What are they going to do? Monitor his computer to keep him watching tape of up-and-coming Congalese prospects and players from the NBL?

Blazers had their coach arrested for fixing poker games and two asst GMs suspended because they could not resist Yang Hansen.

the press release says Portland violated the provision of no-contact with a draft-ineligible player. IIRC the rule is a player must turn 19 during the calendar year of the draft. Looking at Yang's BDay, it kind of looks like the Blazers may have got trapped by circumstance or maybe by not understanding the rule. The press release says the violation was in December of 2023. He wasn't draft-eligible in 2023. But I think he was in 2024

it might be that if the Blazer reps had waited a month till January of 2024 they would have been OK. But maybe I don't know what's going on

They took Hansen out to dinner but they went to five guys instead of In-N-Out.

But in all seriousness, im with you… And who cares?

This seems like such a random thing and for it to surface now when it seems to be from years ago is mighty peculiar.

I guess they didn’t find any weed in the hummer so they gotta go to the guy who’s played like 30 minutes all season.

This isn't Larry Bird we're talking about. Good grief.

Staff should know better than to risk this sort of thing. On the other hand, China has a history of not disclosing the real age of athletes in international competition and Yang as well as Deni played pro hoops long before they were 18. Joe should have known better. He even had media cover the Blazers scouting Yang on the team's homepage.

So once the actual facts (or at least, a more realistic telling of what happened) it really seems incredibly tame and just stupid.

But any chance people can say stupid shit about the team or Cronin or whatever (all to sound like they're smarter than everyone else on twitter), and people will take it.

Again, NOT saying this about anyone here. I'm passive aggressively talking about other places.

The Blazers also self-reported the violation.

I know it was a joke (or I hope it was a joke) to say this amounted to cheating to get Yang. Yang was in the draft where anyone could get him and they even traded down to get him. Certainly, I could have missed something, but I can't see a way this could have resulted in some underhanded way to lang Yang. It was against the rules, but that could be for any number of arcane things.
