Blazers have talked to San Antonio about Kawhi

The Spurs should be rebuilding, this was their chance. This trade will get them some extra wins in the short term, but it'll set them back years.
Do you think Pop really wants to rebuild at this point?
I think they just got a lot better and the addition of Poettel (sp?) will help them in the post.
Rosen cam slash & score like Ginob.

He going from a decent cost of living place to the highest in North America. Also, GST tax on just about everything up there. I wonder how the exchange effects his contact?

At the end of the day what's kept SA relevant all these years hasn't been their offense, it's been their defense. Their defense just got A LOT worse.

"As a result of the trade, the bulk of Leonard’s $20,099,188 salary next season will be taxed at Ontario’s 53.53% tax rate rather than San Antonio’s meager 37% (US federal) rate. In all, Leonard will owe about $2.07 million more in taxes as a result of the trade."

Holy crap!
Life in Toronto is so much better than life in San Antonio. Even with the cold. Worth the 2 mil

Toronto is one of my most favorite cities in the world.

I can only assume no one wanted to give up their top young assets. The Lakers and Philly pulled out of it yesterday.
But I agree with you, that was his chance to rebuild with young players vs just draft picks. It would have been a quicker turn around.

Probably want a last hurrah before Pops calls it quits. Pops isn’t the right guy for a rebuild. They can dump DeRozan and LMA for young assets next summer. In fact, I’d say the Blazers could be a trading partner next year with plenty of young talent and ending contracts.

The vibe I was getting from all of the reports was that they wanted a ton of young assets. But it doesn't really make sense for Boston and Philly to give up the moon for an injured player who might bolt since they're already in a good position. In the end they opted for an allstar instead.

i dunno. I think it a good deal for both. not sure why the hate on Demar. Its funny how a perennial all star in his prime (Derozan) is bashed but we sure do love our smaller, defensively challenged guards, one who isn't an all star and the other gets in via vote once (unless I am mistaken). He doesn't play defense like Kawhi but guess what nobody does. Literally nobody. They weren't getting Anthony Davis. The Spurs have DD for another three years, can keep him, trade him, its a valuable asset. Why do people just like to be so contrarian about everything...?

Agreed, I think this is a good trade for both teams. But it's interesting the Raptors are trading a guy who desperately wanted to remain on his team for a guy who wouldn't even show up to his team's playoff games. Both teams prolly like this move, both players hate it.

Raptors made a big mistake. Not a chance Kawhi resigns there.

I respect the decision.
Keep the Raptors together and so what...they get bounced anyway in playoffs. Sound familiar?
Go for the homerun and if it doesn't work they have literally all of their cap space to start over with.

Raptors can field this lineup next season:

Lowry/Green/Kawhi/Ibaka/Valanciunas

with probably the best bench in the league. They can compete for the EC title.

Sorry, man, I'm thinking it's the other way around - bad trade for both teams. SA loses it's defensive identity. Toronto left hanging after a year. That's the concern anyway. It still could work out for both team, but that's not what I'm forecasting.

Wow, what a bummer to wake up to this news. Not only do we not get Kawhi, but Spurs trade him for another all star so the will keep being good during Dame’s window... at the same time, I can’t get mad because DeRozen is better offer than CJ. I just really hope Neil is looking at deals like CJ for Butler to improve this team, because the West is stronger than ever and Blazers will have hard time making playoffs with status quo
You are all over the map!

How were they going to keep their defensive identity? Hes the best defensive player in the league. The Spurs had no way to avoid getting worse defensively.

Poeltl is an underrated asset in this trade too. He’s a high pick from just two years ago, has been generally fine and showed good improvement last season and will probably be Spurs best center immediately (Gasol is 40 or so).

People really underrate this package for Kawhi. Spurs did not want to rebuild, they wanted to get players who are ready to play now and could not have got any that were both young and already good. DeRozan is really not a terrible player to be calling this package very unimpressive.

If they were going for a vet, get one who near average defensively and don't give up 3&D Green.

Toronto is stupid for this trade just like we would be of we traded for him.

He's opting out.

Colin Cowherd is a fool right now talking that LA will trade for him. Why would they do that when he'll just opt out and come over in 19'?

For one season. Then he's going to LA.

IDGAF what Paul George did.

I see a lot of has beens there.

Good for Toronto; shit for SAS.

Toronto, possibly, just wanted out of Demar’s contract based on mumblings on a twitter, because he isn’t good enough (in masai’s) opinion at least. Did that and got Kawhi. At worst, it’s a salary dump for them to start fresh with no contracts on cap after giving it one last run.

Spurs - Terrible. DeMar DeRozan can’t shoot 3s AND is defensively challenged. You can’t decisvely say DeMar DeRozan is better than CJ McCollum, given CJ shoots the 3 ball a helluva lot better and still has the beautiful mid range game.

Spurs spacing is going to be something to watch.
