Blazers interested in Spencer Hawes

Hawes is a legitimate 7'1" that can shoot with either hand. Can shoot facing the basket or back to the basket.
He has flaws or he would want more cash

Sign and trade for Spencer. Offer full MLE to Ariza. Bring back Mo.

Go take a vaca Neil.

Hawes would be a perfect addition to this ball club. He is much better than Frye. I hope we get him.

It's better we add pieces to our already existing starting 5, than use a starter to get another player.

One racked up stats on a gimmick offense in Philly. The other was a key piece to a 50 win team.

I prefer Hawes as well going forward but Frye was a more effective player last season in my opinion.

So you agree and disagree with me? Cool. Glad we settled that. I'll concede that Channing is a much better kickball player than Spencer.

No thanks. I think you can get Frye for 3/15. I'd rather do that

Yeah I agree. more flexibility, less commitment.

I wonder why Channing chose to be gone on vacation in Italy during all of this hoopla? Hasn't he been working out with blazer guys over the offseason in Portland?

Ariza is supposedly getting 8-10 million offers.

That's too bad, Id really love to see him come off that bench. Either that or move Wes to the Bench. Either way. Love his defense and energy.

I see Portland has made some overtures to Paul Pierce

League source with knowledge of meeting between #Blazers and Spencer Hawes tells me it "went very well." Seems Hawes has genuine interest.

I don't have much opinion of him but this is a good indication:
13.2 points, 8.3 Rebounds, 3 assists per game.
What this means is that he takes a lot of rebounds compared to points and is a willing passer - both good signs.
Problem is, if you play him and Lamarcus together - there'll be no offensive rebounds. I can see having him as mostly LA's backup but that kind of limits his impact.

Hawes would be a great addition. Better than Pau for the role I anticipate. And he's a better player while being 5 years younger than Frye. I'll look past the staunch conservative thing ;-)

Let's make it happen-- full MLE. And then go after a PG.

Hawes is reportedly asking for around 8 million so would need to do a sign and trade for that.

yeah, Hawes would have to tell CLE he wants to go to POR and will not sign with CLE, then CLE would at least get something of value

BfWA (aka Mr. Capologist of RipCityTwo), can we use the MLE to absorb salary in a S&T?

So, can we give Hawes an 8 mil deal and send out 3 mil in salary? Would BYC come into play?

We can't absorb using the MLE. A trade of Wright + Freeland would allow us to take back up to 9.4 mill though. That would preserve our MLE for a new backup 3.

Btw if we were to make a s&t sending 2 for 1 that would open one more roster spot and we could add Hawes and still re-sign Mo, sign Vince to BAE and have the MLE available to make a run at say Marvin Williams. New bench rotation.... Mo, Vince, Marvin, Robinson, Hawes. I would say that is a significant upgrade.

I'm not sure if Cleveland would want either, may have to include a draft pick.

Hawes took 4 threes a game at 41%, which is a potentially primary cause for his TS% of 55% and eFG% 53% (contrast with LMA's TS% of 50.7% and eFG% of 45.9%--because LMA didn't take that extra step back for a 3 very often). Let's put it this way, over LMA's 1423 shots last year that 7% increase in eFG% would've related to an extra 204 points. Hawes ranked 41st in the league, just behind KlayKlay and ahead of KLove. (Interestingly, one of the reasons our offense was so good last year was that, in eFG%, we had Batum at #20 in the league, Lopez at #25, Wes at #34, Lillard at #66. For another example, the Spurs' entire rotation--save Splitter--was in the top 77, including Patty Cakes, Ginobili and Bellinelli).

If you want to talk about "gimmicky offenses"--after he moved to CLE from PHI his shooting stats actually went UP.

If Neil can pull Hawes/Pierce/Mo out of this offseason, I'd be absolutely ecstatic. I'd put us right behind the Spurs in the west for next year.

Then it's all on Terry to improve the D and the players to mesh and improve.

Im not a big fan of Pierce's attitude/personality but he is exactly the kind of solid scoring veteran that could make our bench really good. Unfotunately he is also probably the least likely of that group for us to get.

I'd we very happy if we got Hawes, after that it's all gravy as we will likely get a solid backup PG (maybe Mo stays) and perhaps a wing - I'd really like to try to get Thad Young from Philly for a CJ and change trade. Pierce is very low probability IMO but would love to get him

Post deleted, and then I see Schilly said about what I would have...should've known. ;)

Yes, we can sign Mo as a non-Bird for a max of 4/13.59M. Can't use MLE to absorb S&T. We can trade Freeland/Wright/future considerations for Hawes at ~9.4M starting salary (which would end up 4/40M) and still, after those two, have the BAE and MLE available and the roster spots with which to put them.

But if we do those, then the biggest need as I see it is at the 2/3. Pierce and VC would probably work, but if we're exploring S&Ts anyway I'm interested in seeing how low Hayward's value in UTH has sunk. I think he'll definitely bounce back from last year's bad year, but UTH probably isn't too keen on giving him 4/40 or more.

This is really intriguing. Here I was thinking that the MLE and BAE were our only options. But if we can persuade teams into S&T ing their guys who are on their way out for our scrubs, it opens up a whole new can of worms. We can get really good, really quick.
