TRAIL BLAZERS TRANSITION TO FOX SPORTS RADIO 620
Team stays with Clear Channel Media + Entertainment,
moves down the hall for new radio flagship

PORTLAND, Ore. (August 29, 2013) – The Portland Trail Blazers and Clear Channel Media + Entertainment have entered into an agreement to air all preseason and regular season games on Fox Sports Radio 620 (KPOJ AM) during the 2013-14 season, it was announced by the team today.

Trail Blazers Radio Announcers Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey will call the first broadcast on the new radio flagship when the Trail Blazers open the 2013-14 preseason against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Moda Center on Monday, Oct. 7.

“We are excited about the opportunity to broadcast our games on a station the offers an all-sports format,” said Trail Blazers President & CEO Chris McGowan. “This transition also allows us to avoid any preemption throughout the course of the season.”

Fox Sports Radio 620 will also broadcast Trail Blazers Courtside, the team’s weekly talk show hosted by Wheeler, Harvey and television broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice, beginning Monday, Sept. 9.

"We're thrilled to continue our partnership and build "Blazer Mania" in Portland,” said Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Market President Robert Dove. ”For all things Trail Blazers you only need Fox Sports Radio 620."

Radio affiliates outside of the Portland area will not be affected.

So for us out- of- towners, where were they last year? How many times have they switched in the last few years?

Were on 1190 last year. Gone from 95.5 to 750 to 1190 to 620 in the past 4 years.

WTF is up with this? They switch radio stations every year, but on the TV side, they signed a 10 year deal with Comcast?????

BNM

The High Fidelity broadcasts on 95.5 were THE BOMB. Man that sounded so good.

People actually say this?

620 now programmed in my car.

Probably start listening to 620 a lot more because of this move. I follow around the Blazer broadcast station like a good sheep. I'm so bad I will listen to the station even when the Blazers weren't on. Sucks when it was 1190. I used to listen to 750 all the time and continued to listen a little when the Blazers moved stations. But these days I notice I never listen to 750 . . . looks like 620 will be my station of choice this year (with a little 1080 mixed in here and there)

C'mon Paul!! I have boycotted that station and will continue to do so. Ever since Clear Channel (Owned by Mitt Romney's Bain Capital) took progressive radio off I have sworn not to turn to that station. Well, at least my brother has Comcast....

IMO, the only good talk radio show on any station is Issac and Suke... only because they make me laugh. The rest of it is just re-hash.

I like 620am! Wheels at Work from 2pm-4pm!

They may be entertaining, but you have to admit that they know NOTHING about the NBA......NOTHING!

And when our ONLY pro sport in town is basketball, they aren't bringing much to the table for me.

Got a bunch of free time in Sept., I'll have to check Wheels out......maybe even crank call him a couple times!

620 is great. A nice Beavers station! Wheels at Work, too! Only thing worse that Petros and Money is Isak and Suke, those guys blow.

I have never actually listened to 620.

It's funny, it seems Issac and Suke are an acquired taste. However, that being said, they can be pretty tasteless at times, and I have to shut them off.

620 AM used to be the Progressive Talk Station (a station listened to by 30K+ people in Portland). Mitt Romney gets pounded in the election and then they switch the format out of spite. Even though it was highly listened to. Fuck Mitt Romney, Bain Capital, Clear Channel, AND FOX. I will never listen to that station again.

The decision to switch formats had nothing to do with the election. If the progressive talk format made money they would have kept it. Bain is about making money. I'm not sure where that 30k listeners number came from but I know their book ratings were not good. But more importantly they had a terrible time finding local advertising.

Progressive Talk radio has done very poorly nationwide. Lots of angry and scared old people will listen to conservative talk radio.

620 KGW? Will Craig Walker being broadcasting the games?

KPOJ was always in the black.

How is that research or prove anything? It's some guy's blog post who admits multiple times that he doesn't know anything about what happened. As for your "always in the black statement here is what he said:

"ClearChannel’s a corporation, and their only directive is to make money. If KPOJ had been a cash cow for them they’d probably keep milking it as long as they could. We’ve heard from several sources that KPOJ was always in the black (although we obviously have no way to confirm that)."

But in the same blog post he also says the following:

"The station said they had been losing listeners for a while, and baseball was an attempt to expand listenership."

" It was a ClearChannel corporate decision, we were told, and KPOJ had been losing money and listeners for over two years. They’d tried to increase ratings without success, and this was a more profitable way to go."

"First of all, we have no definitive inside knowledge of why the station changed formats."

Stations change formats all the time. If Progressive Talk radio was always in the black like you claim a different station would have picked up that format by now. Sports talk radio reaches a male demographic that advertisers want. This isn't a giant conspiracy.

Carl Wolfson said his show always made money. I know for a fact that Thom Hartmann's show made money (he will be on KBOO soon).

Rush Limbaugh has been losing advertisers left and right but suddenly his show is propped up (it's been losing lots of money the past year and a half) on 6 networks?

I guess since no one (right wing clear channel) will ever tell us, you can believe what you believe. I see conspiracy.

Your first link is almost 10 months old and your 2nd link is an editorial.

Again, if Progressive Talk radio was a money maker someone by now would have switched to that format to make that money. If Carl Wolfson always made money someone would have picked him up by now.

And just so you are clear I hate Limbaugh and conservative talk radio. Liberal or Conservative, any talk radio that is devoted to one narrow point of view is dangerous and doesn't help anything.

I'm just not seeing a giant conspiracy theory here.

That is a cop out. The age of any link doesn't make it any less true. It's 10 months old because that's how long ago they changed formats. Carl has his own Internet radio show now. Thom Hartmann is still on the air in many cities (even Africa) and will be on KBOO soon.
