Is Hibbert lumbering? I admit I've barely seen him play at all, but I had the impression he was reasonably athletic.

barfo

I wouldn't call him 'lumbering', but he's not Meyers Leonard in terms of athleticism.

Untrue. Centers are actually designed for 3-pt shooting. They are taller and are closer to the rim. See how that works?

It sure looks like this team is designed for PnR and maybe some motion, and not run and gun. Not to mention a good defensive coach could probably make them a great defensive team. Mike D is not that guy.

Sure seems like the idea is for a PnR offense, and also an uptempo pace, but not exactly run, gun, and jack up 3 pointers.

The Pacers are already looking at other options at center. They've reached to out Omer Asik, who was with Chicago last season

For the record, I don't really want d'antoni. Simply a coach with a motion offense that can get everyone shots and promote ball movement.

With the addition of these younger players, the organization is at a critical point in development. It's important that these two guys pan out the way they envsion. Especially Lillard. Not only is it importantto have a coach that runs a motion offense that can get everyone the ball. Development and accountability is important. I can't think of a better person for all of this than Jerry Sloan. I think Jerry will see to it that your younger guys develop. If for no other reason he will hold them accountable to it. He did it with Stockton and and he did it with Williams. Made all stars and leaders out of both of them.

Oh, then we agree. I'd rather have a Jerry Sloan offensive coach (but not Sloan), though, because I think the players on this team are better served in a half-court set than running up and down the court and jacking up as many shots as possible.

It's a timing thing though... If we had to match Nic's offer first (say he signed just before Roy did), that could put us over the cap, where we wouldn't be able to offer Roy his max deal. Roy would need to sign "first".

To answer the original 'what if' - if they both signed "at the same time" I would imagine, given the spirit of the rule (providing the 'home' team the greatest ability to hang onto its players) that we'd still get some sort of right of refusal for Nic.

Nic signing first outright however, could be bad news - unless we could somehow talk KP and Donnie into waiving their 72 hours on Roy...

Well, as of now:

Hibbert has already announced that he has come to terms with the Blazers and will sign. This says to the world that the Pacers - 1) told Hibbert they won't offer him a 5 year deal, and 2) Hibbert wants to go to the Blazers or stay with the Pacers, but not worry about other teams that may have expressed interest. So, there will be no delay on Hibbert signing.

No word on Batum coming to terms with Minny. He is supposed to have interest from another team. As well, I bet he would like to see if he can get even more money and/or a 5th year by coming to direct agreement with the Blazers.

Batum may have worked out what he is doing by the time the moratoriam is lifted, in which case they both sign at the same time. Doesn't seem that Batum will end up signing before Hibbert.

Jaynes thinks Hibbert's deal may be in trouble because of the Batum offer sheet.

Fez was on to something with D'Antoni teaching Lillard.

Lillard was a great PnR PG in college. Olshey called him the best PnR PG to come out in a few years. Mike D'Antoni is the master of the PnR.

That said, don't think D'Antoni fits Olshey's overall vision.

Love him or hate him, the way he runs the P&R it'll put the development of Lillard and Leonard on the fast track.

From what it sounds that a signing of a offer sheet to 10 mil the cap hold increases to that much for that current team he is on. Putting the amount of money available to spend in jeopardy.

Batum cannot sign the offer sheet until July 11 but by merely agreeing to it on that date, his cap hold -- now about $5.4 million -- would increase and thereby endanger Portland's ability to make a max-contract offer to Hibbert. When Batum, or any restricted free agent, signs an offer sheet, the cap hold with his original team immediately becomes the figure that he's signed for on the new offer sheet.

So if Batum's cap hold goes from $5.4 million to something over $10 million, the Blazers would be left with somewhere around $12 million of available room.

If Portland wants to offer Hibbert a max contract, it is believed the first season of that deal could approach $14 million, so Portland would either be unable to make the offer or would have to cut or trade a player to create more space. It would also likely mean the signing of Hibbert would be Portland's only free-agent move, because no cap room would be left for anything else.

The best scenario, of course, would be to get Batum to hold off on signing anything until Portland's moves are finished, but that's highly unlikely. Or the Blazers could simply just let him walk -- but this is a player the new general manager has called a "cornerstone" of the franchise.

Either way, it is not a preferable situation for the Trail Blazers.

Thanks for the link. If Nic really wants out of Portland, he's going to sign early. The nightmare scenario is renouncing Batum, making the offer to Hibbert, and then Indy matching Hibbert.

No Hibbert
No Batum
No Nothing

pretty certain jaynes is wrong on that

pretty certain jaynes is wrong on that

I hope so, because it's an obvious way to screw over another team, and really makes improving a team via FA almost impossible.

I'm not saying Hibbert is a lumbering center but the need for those big centers is getting less and less. To me it's much easier to nuetralize a big man these days, especially with the foul trouble that slashing guards cause. I like the idea of signing him and forcing other teams to deal with our size inside, just not sure it makes THAT much better.

I think Jaynes is full of shit, the Clippers did all their signings under the cap and then matched DeAndre Jordans contract.

actually, just last year, Clippers waited on matching on DeAndre, to keep room and sign others, and THEN matched. But his offer didn't count against them. Jaynes is wrong.

damn, beat me. repped.

I think Jaynes numbers are off.

The first year for Hibbert's MAX deal is closer to $12.9mil, not $14.

Also, the Blazers could renounce every signle one of their free agents and Euros except Freeland to create more cap room. They can also waive Shawne Williams and use the stretch provision to create a little more cap room. They don't want to do it but could if they have to.

Eliminating Batum's cap hold, the Blazers could have $22.7 to $24.3mil in cap room. Subtract the $12.9mil to Hibbert and that leaves $9.8mil to $11.4mil in cap room to match Batum, or to renounce his rights and try to sign other free agents.

He averaged 12/11 in the playoffs on 50% shooting

MAX money? Really?

He also averaged 3.8 bpg in the first round, leading the Pacers to their first series win in years. He averaged 2.5 bpg in the second round and helped the Pacers take a 2-1 lead in the first round. If any team is going to beat the Heat in the next 5 years, it will be a team win a dominant center. Hibbert is a top 3 center in the league. He's Oden but healthy. This is FANTASTIC news if we get him.

The Clippers matched the offer sheet to Jordan about an hour after they claimed point guard Chauncey Billups off of waivers from the New York Knicks, who had used the amnesty provision of the new collective bargaining agreement on his contract.

Clippers general manager Neil Olshey had hinted at these moves when he spoke to reporters earlier in the day.

"There are strategic reasons, there are some sequential transactions that have to happen first," he said, when asked whether the team would match Jordan's offer sheet. "We've still got $3.5 million in cap room and before we give up that flexibility we have to exhaust every opportunity that we have to use the remaining cap room we have.

"But I would expect DeAndre to be here smiling and being goofy and doing skits with Blake at some point at media day (Tuesday)."

I don't think Hibbert is a dominant center
