Comcast has the contract with the Blazers. That is the only difference. It's Blazer content. They have to follow the rules or they are out. Talkin Blaa was the same way. Yes i purposely spelled the BLAA.....

All I’m saying is, there is no affiliation whatsoever with these NBCSports shows and us. Other than they air on the same channel. No different that Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune both airing on Ch. 2.

Blazers pre, half and postgame show and the game obviously is Blazers Broadcasting content. That’s it. Outsiders, local sports radio shows, camping and rodeo infomercials or whatever else they air is NBC Sports. Totally different.

Having taken the tour of the blazers studio, i can confirm this.

Nobody anywhere ever said this either. What has been said was a response to a comment about "East Coast" television coverage. Portland is nowhere in the league of NewYork. New Jersey, Philly, Boston. All those places have three sports at least and multiple venues to attend to.

Exactly what about the line of thinking is unsubstantiated? That the statements were never said? Or that Portland cannot compare to east coast TV markets? Or that Comcast is directing their TV coverage at watchers that are not as up to speed on this team as you? (Which i happen to know is fact) Or that most fans watching games don't watch the post game shows and pretty much turn them off?

Who are these people? Two dudes and a chick I’ve never seen before. They’re not worse than the Marang crew though.

They have a backup crew that does one of the shows during the week now that the others do the postgame show.

Actually I liked them better than the regular crew.

So i posted this. Because i happen to feel this way.

Blazers Outsiders is fine. It does exactly what the Blazers need. They are frilly and they make basic basketball points that the average fan can watch and follow. They also fill in with "Feel Good" stories and personal points that people want to know and hear about the team. They have a few people that are easy to watch and don't make your skin crawl. They come across as personable and nice. The whole idea is to not create drama and controversy and they do that well.

People on this site have a little different perspective. Or at least some do. No casual Blazer fan watching a post game show after a big win is gonna want to be stuck on mundane efficiency stats and picking apart a player that had maybe 6 mins on the court and crated a couple turnovers. They are not gonna want to hear about a player that is in a slump over and over again. Pretty sure they would lose viewers if after winning the first round of a playoff series they went all in on telling people the coach didn't have a good enough offense to be considered a good coach in this league.

Blazers Outsiders is on the same channel that televises the Blazer Games. They are trying to draw on fans watching after a game and they are posting Twitter reactions and have some simple commentary. They could maybe bring in a specialist on aspects but i'm pretty sure that would flop huge. Certainly with this crowd. Well... At least half of it on any given game night. Again that is an opinion but it might be pretty accurate beings i have experience reading game threads.

Now lets get to the other point. Complex driven breakdowns of the Blazers on video and talked about are great. But how many times are you willing to tune into a show on TV of this nature during the off season? Okay how about the casual fan? How about the fan that watches 10 games a season? How about the NFL fan? How about the guy who is all about Softball (and yes there are many). Camping? Hunting? Fishing? The point is that having a show year round on complex intricate breakdowns of offense and defense without the game on one side or the other is gonna be hard to maintain around here. If Portland was a three sport town i believe would make this more viable and the channel that was broadcasting it might be able to keep it going. However the people on the program would need to have as much idea about all sports including Timbers. Portland MLB and maybe NHL at least. You got to have more content than just Blazers in July and August. Remember also. This year the Blazers played into May. That is not always the case. When the season is over by the time you are mailing your taxes it's gonna be hard to keep people interested.

NBC Sports NW has content year round. Why does that content have to be catered towards other profressional sports in order for the Blazers postgame show to have a bit more analysis?

I'm not even saying they should go all-in, as I think you can cater to both. You're acting like it's extremely black or white. Instead of a constant "complex intrinsic breakdown", how about providing something better than "Score more points" when asked for a key to the game?

And you know whats funny? They have the personell to be able to cater to both. Dan knows his stuff and would do a solid job breaking things down. Joe is a good host. Shain can be the "funny guy" for casual fans to enjoy. If they mixed up analysis and entertainment, the show would be better. Instead, there was a couple times last year that I saw, where Dan would do something like bring up TS% and get made fun of for it. It shouldn't be taboo to talk about a players efficiency on a damn postgame show! It's not even a complex topic...

Anyway. To put it into a simple phrase you might feel better about i'll use the words of Mark Cuban on Shark Tank.
"Your target Audience is too small I'm Out"
If TrueBlazerFan was "TrueNBAFan" and covered the entire NBA and all players you might get a better look. Or maybe even "TrueSportsFan" And cover all sports.

Yes, the target audience who wants just Blazer in-depth analysis is small, but a show can still have that aspect to it and appeal to casuals. I always go back to the Basketball Jones who originally covered mostly Toronto (yes they covered the rest of the NBA too), but they did a good job of mixing in stats and analytics while also having fun with it. Now that show (like all shows) aren't for everyone.

If the idea is to do a general sports show for "all Portland sports" then yeah having more professional teams helps if the idea is to do a show catered to Blazer fans more sports doesn't help them. It's pretty normal for single sport shows to take breaks during the off-season and to only have a handful of "special shows", you can get by with that.

For a show on TV that is "Blazer related", to me it needs to do a lot of things, it can't only be X's and O's, it can't just be frilly, it has to have knowledgeable people who are also entertaining. There is a middle ground that should probably be tread.

The other issue with broadening your audience is you have to broaden your knowledge base. The reason why I don't listen to 1080 in the afternoons is I think one of the hosts is basically sports illiterate on the sports I like the most. He can talk about a few sports and knows his stuff, but the ones I care about he gives me literally nothing useful...

KJ, one thing I think you are failing to think about is how anyone in the world can now access these shows. I was amazed to see how many people that consume the videos Bones is putting out are located outside the United States. With Comcast Sports NW a good portion of Portland still doesn't even get that channel and a lot of them are so fed up with that situation that they won't support their content anyway. Bones also puts out videos about the entire NBA. If you watched the video introducing his podcast lineup you'd see that he'll have a daily NBA Scoop video as part of his lineup too along with 3 other well established Blazers podcasts. We covered both the draft and free agency from both the whole league and a Blazers point of view.

And how did a discussion about a Blazers post game show turn into needing content for the off season? Besides, the NBA has turned into a year round soap opera. Your arguments would be much more valid if he was trying to start his own channel on TV and had to fill 24 hours a day of programming but that isn't close to the case here.

There are certainly a greater amount of international players and a very decent amount have played for the Blazers. Nurk is gaining and Gasol has his fair share of followers. I'm sure Hezonja will have his people also.

I do understand the Comcast deal. It's absolutely criminal how they have cut out pretty much everyone outside the Portland Metro area. I am joining the masses this year as i have cancelled all cable TV to my house and have gone with Firestick. Gonna have to figure out how to watch games. Sounds like Reddit is a no go now.
I didn't try to make off season a topic other than what the Blazers Outsiders are providing. If you are going to do in depth discussions they probably are not the best place for that is all i'm saying. I didn't try to make off season a topic other than what the Blazers Outsiders are providing. If you are going to do in depth discussions they probably are not the best place for that is all i'm saying. I actually didn't mind Blazers Outsiders when it was just a once or twice a week show. It was just 3 Blazers fans talking about the team. The show design and set up is really poor for a pre and post game show though. Even though Talking Ball had issues too, it was way better. I feel like Dan especially would've been better on a show formatted that way. Maybe it will be better this season if they are more comfortable. It really seems to me though that NBCNW is trying to go as cheap as possible but knows it can't get away with no post game show at all. Same for Blazers Broadcasting when they fired Harvey and didn't have a 2nd radio guy for awhile.

You have no basis for this point. The Blazers are a huge brand. The difficulty is getting the word out to the world that an alternative to the post game show now exists, not that it's audience is limited. In just a few short months Bones has already gotten enough views to start getting paid, put advertisements on his videos, get his own promo code for Seat Geek, and has gotten a couple sponsors. His videos regularly get thousands of views. That might not seem like a lot but for such a new and unknown channel to be getting the subscription and view numbers he's getting before the season even starts is pretty remarkable. It would be pretty much impossible for anyone to go from unknown to NBA media star without grinding out on the lower levels first. The channel is called Blazers Uprise because it is about the Blazers. Having a generic NBA channel makes it way harder to get viewers because there thousands of those and people aren't as passionate if you are talking about other teams usually until you get to their team.

Quite frankly the local media coverage of the Blazers is almost non-existent right now. There is a huge void there that someone could fill if they're good enough. All it takes is for one site, channel, or media member to take a liking to Bones and his channel and it could go mainstream pretty quickly or he could get hired to do this on a bigger stage or for a bigger audience. The internet has an unlimited amount of possible viewers.

Besides, if someone didn't want to watch a video about the Blazers or the NBA then having a video about the NFL isn't gonna make someone then tune into a Blazers post game show. I'm sorry KJ but that makes no sense.

I always enjoyed Calling All Sports, Then Courtside.
If you can have someone like a Steve Jones, where his gift/talent was the technical aspect of the game with a great way of articulating his points. He was always in command and didn't lean on gimmicks. Then when he coupled with Rice, bingo, it offset Jones weakness to offer some fun and sizzle to the conversations. They complimented each other real well. Just like MB & Rice.
Those two became a brand in themselves, that the city bought into, but all things have a shelf life. I really think that was the best pregame show ever. (Jones and Rice on Courtside)
I like BonesJ's breakdowns and am very impressed that he has the perseverance and stick ability as someone so young to go after his innovations. I think he will succeed and forget all of us at some point!
Id like to see him, for some of his podcast, to couple up with a laid back, off the cuff, funny roundball junkie to bring forth some fun and laughs while he concentrates on his technical knowledge and breakdowns, much as Steven Jones did with Rice & Walton.
