I think Dame will play in the home games and here’s why:

Reasons Tom does it
1: not only is it free to have him play, it is “getting basketball value” out of his money.
2: Tom likes to win and thinks plugging Dame into the lineup will help that happen.
3: Tom is sports owner greedy; he wants to grab every opportunity to get the most on the court even when it might rub people the wrong way.
4: he gets to look like a genius and a hero if it works and Dame helps us win one or both home games.

Reasons Dame does it
1: Dame is the ultimate competitor; he sees the team can win without him but needs him to go the extra step, exactly what he wanted
2: He gets a huge moment coming off the bench to a home crowd and blowing the roof off the Moda
3: if we win one or both home games, he looks like a genius and a hero for leading the team to victory

Reasons Tiago does it
1: he wants to give Tom and Dame what they want to show he can play along with storylines, and we’re already overachieving so why not get greedy
2: Deni is banged up and we need a good player to give him time to rest
3: Tiago looks like a genius and a hero if coaching Dame to victories in one or both home games, and will drive up his negotiating power

Reasons Adam Silver lets it happen
1: Dame coming back for the playoffs is the best possible storyline for the series, and maybe the playoffs
2: This has probably been the plan all along; during preseason people in the Blazers talked briefly about Dame maybe coming back for the playoffs then suddenly hushed up about it, but Dame also gets invited to the ASG as if he were still an active player, signaling the league doesn’t think Dame sitting was tanking, and rewarding Dame fans for their patience
3: if Portland wins one or both home games, he looks like a genius and a hero for Dame’s ASG appearance and giving the Blazers the “good team” referee treatment all season, teaching this new owner how we can do things in the NBA with the carrot instead of the stick if everyone plays nicely

Because it’s really good to get the Boss of All Referees to sign off on your plan to sneak Dame into the playoffs. Catching Silver off guard would have been bad form, and might have been punished later.

Maybe in the past, but i think the league is different now. There’s too much potential money involved in a decision like playing Dame early not to have the ownership/league layer involved. Tom would want it to look like his decision based on his particular flavor of ego, and Adam Silver will want to be well-informed to help the league maximize the sport moment’s marketing potential.

Very probably not; I had just written a 900-word essay essentially begging my bosses to let me keep my job in the face of an impending layoff and I needed to vent some emotional steam with that post of mine.
