You play him at SF but use him as like a PF. Doesn't really help spread the floor but with LA playing so far out of the paint I could see it working.
So you're saying you want Aldridge basically playing the role of SF on offense with Josh Smith playing PF and Hickson or whoever next to him at C? And on defense you take the best PF defender out of the 3 and put him at SF?
Josh Smith is a PF. Hes a very good defender at PF, and he defends the rim well. Hes a solid rebounder. His skills give him an advantage at PF, but at SF he'd have very little success creating from the perimeter, and he would kill spacing with his lack of 3 pt shooting (hes shooting 38% from 3 this year, but its on only 1.3 apg). Hes a hell of an athlete but I dunno how he'd do on an island against the better players at that position.
I think Josh Smith is a great idea for Portland, but the obvious adjustment would be to move LMA to C and Hickson to the bench. You replace your worst starter with a borderline all-star type PF and impact defensive player who fits with Aldridge.
