Blazers sign Mo Williams

NAH BRO, GOTTA PUT ALL OF OUR EGGS IN A BASKET. TRADE LA AND BUILD THE FUTURE ON ELITE REBOUNDER DERRICK FAVORS.

Dame/ Mo/ Earl
Wes/ CJ/ Crabbe
Nic/ Wright/ Barton
LA/ TRob/ Claver
Lopez/ Leonard/ Freeland

Apropos of nothing, which position's rotation sounds the most like a law firm?
  • Williams, Watson & Lillard
  • McCollum, Matthews & Crabbe
  • Batum, Barton & Wright
  • Claver, Aldridge & Robinson
  • Leonard, Lopez & Freeland

I think I'd hire either of our guard rotations to defend me, unless it was an auto accident, in which case I'd go with the power forwards (C, A & R). Also, interesting (to me, at least) that there's a pair with shared last initials in each group except the PFs.

We are all clearly missing the true meaning behind this.

Mo Williams + King James best friends in CLE.

King James potentially free agent this year.

LeBron has said Oregon is like his "other" home. Loves playing at the RG, loves Duck football, and Nike is located here.

LEBRON '15
I don't care how good he is. If LeBrainless comes to Portland, I will actively root against the Blazers. Unless they're playing the L*kers, of course...

"@JesseMadsen_RS: @mikerice6 you think we have too many PGs on our roster now though? CJ, Mo and Earl? CJ needs all the playing time earn it

Blazers now have a nice blend of young & vets with experience. Now your going to have to earn your min on a team with their eye on playoffs

I wonder if Olshey at all regrets signing Watson earlier this summer (or vice versa). I still think it would have better to keep the 15th roster spot open in place of Watson, but passing on Williams over an open spot would have been a mistake.

The big man rotation we had with that team was deadly. Is there any other C on the market we can get for the min (by waiving Joel to create room)?

Don't worry: the plan is to trade Mo Williams for Greg Oden at midseason.

He was signed with the vet min, and we could just as easily cut him and sign anyone else with the vet min if we were so inclined. Watson's presence on our roster will have absolutely no negative impact on any potential moves we might possibly want to do.

With all the ex-Jazz guards we're acquiring, eventually we'll end up with Deron Williams.

THRILLED we got Mo Williams! Great fucking offseason. Love reading all the positive posts.

The team is over the cap at this point with the current guaranteed contracts. They can't waive Watson and sign another player, since they are over the cap for next season. You can't just waive players with guaranteed contracts when you're over the cap and sign new players, right? Or did something change in the new CBA, where you can just waive guys, continue to pay them, and go over the cap to bring in new players?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't just cut guys once a week and sign another without the previous player's contract still impacting the current team salary for the season.

Why, we always have the option to waive players and pick up anyone we want at the minimum. A guaranteed contract does not mean a guaranteed roster spot. It just means you'll get paid, even if you are waived. Happens all the time.

"MINIMUM PLAYER SALARY EXCEPTION -- Teams can offer players minimum salary contracts even if they are over the cap. Contracts can be up to two years in length. For two-year contracts, the second season salary is the minimum salary for that season. The contract may not contain a bonus of any kind. This exception can also be used to acquire minimum salary players via trade. There is no limit to the number of players that can be signed or acquired using this exception."

No change, the minimum player salary exception has been around forever.

So we can sign X guys, but can we waive X guys?

I wasn't aware of that. I thought teams needed an injury exception to add a player to a full roster that was over the cap. Your link says there are unlimited chances to acquire players using the vet minimum, but nothing about how waiving players on the contract is unlimited.

This bring's up the question, did we use an exception to sign Williams? If so, which one. Seems like there are so many these days (Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Bi-annual MLE, etc.).

This signing reminds me of Whitsitt: acquire a good player if you can get him even if he duplicates what we already have. Mo Williams, Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, all incredibly similar. Scoring guards with not-amazing passing ability and questionable defense. I wonder if Denver would be interested in a Mo-for-Andre swap. We'll throw in Joel for free.

Yep, the only catches are:

The guys you waive still count against the luxury tax (if you go over the threshold) and you can only offer minimum salary contracts to any new guys you sign.

Nope, but the injury exception (Disabled Player Exception) lets you potentially offer the new player more money:

"The team may sign a free agent for one season only, for 50% of the disabled player's salary or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less."

Why was Olshey so happy to have the 15th spot open, when you can just waive players to create roster space for a trade, anyhow? Are you positive you can release as many players as you want with the vet minimum and add players if you're over the cap? I still don't see that in the CBA. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I wonder why even have 15-man rosters if you can just pay up to, let's say, 20 players over the course of a year? Seems like a way to circumvent the cap.

I agree with bnm. You can cut and sign as many minimum guys as you want.

Didn't we waive Ronnie price last year?

I love this move, now we have a very solid bench. Mo has been a starting PG most of his career, great shooter. It'll be good for the Blazers starters to not have to worry so much about foul trouble, or conserving energy.

Yes, Price was waived to clear a roster spot for Eric Maynor. We used a trade exception and the draft rights of Georgios Printezi to land Maynor, but had to waive Price to clear a roster spot.
