Blazers sign Mo Williams

All I can say is if y'alls believe that Mo Williams is happy to be a low-paid backup to last year's rookie of the year on a team that will be lucky to make the playoffs, then I guess you have greater faith in humanity than I have. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

He signed the deal knowing what our roster looked like. Quit bitching.

This whine is the equivalent of a flop.

He sure as hell seems happy because if he wasn't then why would he sign with us? You seem to be unable to comprehend Williams signing here knowing full well he is going to be a backup on a team not looking to get out of the first round this year but instead get to the playoffs and Olshy actually wanting him here. We went from an undersized rookie and a old veteran as our backup 1/2 to having a legitament combo guard who can pass and shoot and is only a few years removed from being an allstar.

Boy, I guess I need to screw on a happy face or the loyalty police will clamp down on me.

Because we OFFERED THE MOST MONEY?

He's like a lot of players: expected much better offers than came his way. Found out in a hurry that the financial landscape has changed. But it's nice to see everyone thinks he picked Portland as the best place to showcase his talents.

wearing #7.

weird. oh, saw someone already said it.

oh well. Roy won't get retired but it'll be weird.

I heard he's pissed off about being here. Discuss.

Exactly the point--if he were looking for a place to "showcase his talents", why would he come to Portland? He no doubt knows that Lillard is the unquestioned starter. He would have to be dumber than a box of rocks to think that he would be anything BUT a backup PG here.

I don't know if I agree with that. I think him knowing that Portland would utilize him more (more minutes), best possibility to be on a winner and best contract offer; are the deciding factors. There are plenty of teams that still have mid level or MLEs; but already have a starting PG and back-up. I wouldn't be surprised if Mo will get 20-25 a game playing 1-2.

He meets the media today at 3 pm. They say he's bringing a male cheerleader with hand grenades.

I actually disagree with that. Williams knows he is most likely done as a starter in this league and here he can showcase why he would be a great 6th man/combo guard off the bench. Baring injury I fully expect him to get 25-30m a game and be in the running as sixth man of the year.

So you assume that CJ will not see significant minutes this season?

Anyone have any issues with Mo wearing number 7? Quite a bit of drama on twitter about it? I personally dont care but Im surprised at how many people do care.
I'm extremely annoyed by the twits whining about it. One said Mo was going to wear "Roy's No. 7". It isn't "Roy's". It's just No. 7. And now it Mo's.

Any talk about retiring No. 7 is just stupid. I guess it's a reflection on how desperate for ANY success Blazers fans have become if they think Roy warrants having his number retired. Although, as we all know, the bar in Portand for retiring numbers has been set pretty low. But still...no.

I used to think that Roy's number should have been retired, but now I think its pretty stupid. Roy, although great, didn't play long enough to warrant the honor.

He did. He has a player option for year two, so he can try to get a better deal next year if he can earn it.

And what better place than in Portland that needs a back-up guard badly? The best opportunity for him to showcase himself.

Yep, that ship has sailed. He didn't play long enough, at a high enough level (due to injuries), and it was a long time ago.

Yep. Obviously no one wanted him as a starter, and seemingly no one else wanted to pay him as much. If he has any grasp on reality (certainly rare for an NBA player), he knows this is a good opportunity for him. Right now he's the second or third best 'guard' on the team.

Fair points. But the Mavs (where Stotts came from) won when they had Jason Kidd, a "true floor general" of the purest kind.

When the Mavs won it all, Jason Kidd was 37 years old and not nearly the player he once was. He averaged 8.2 AST/g and had a AST% of 35.4 during the regular season. Those number dipped slightly to 7.3 AST/game and 32.7 AST% during the playoffs. Last season, Mo Williams, playing with far less talented teammates posted almost identical AST numbers (7.2 AST/game, AST% = 33.2) to what Kidd posted during the 2010-11 playoffs.

The key to Dallas winning it all wasn't Jason Kidd's passing, it was the fact that the Mavs had some really great shooters. Dirk shot .460 from 3-point range during the playoffs. Jason Terry 3FG% = .442, DeShawn Stevenson 3FG% = .397, Peja Stojakovic 3FG% = .377, and even Jason Kidd 3FG% = .374. And again, Mo Williams regular season 2012-13 with 3FG% = .383 compares very favorably with Jason Kidd 2010-11 playoffs.

I still don't get why you're so butt hurt about this signing. The Blazers just added a veteran PG who can shoot and pass, has a lot of playoff experience and will be a great backup to Damian Lillard. The two can also play together for 5 or 6 minutes a game to let Damian play off the ball. Remember how well Damian played off the ball when he was paired with Eric Maynor? He'll be even better in that role paired with Mo Williams.

This was such a good signing. I just don't understand how anyone could see it as a negative. If nothing else, it proves to LaMarcus Aldridge that this team is NOT in rebuilding mode.

BNM

Still. Too soon for that. And it's not like 7 is Mo's #.

He has worn 25, 2, and 5 throughout his career. Why 7 now?

really? man i've lost track. I still think of Blake, Rudy, and Outlaw.

Never mind.

2 is Wessy, 5 is Barton, and 25 must be one of the new acquisitions... probably Earl Watson, who used to wear 25.

Roy ABSOLUTELY warranted a retired number. Until he signed with another team. Had he bowed out and stayed out, #7 would have been hanging from the rafters already.

I've never understood the concept of retiring numbers. Given the limited quantity of numerals that fit on jerseys, it seems like it would only be a matter of time before they're used up. Seems to me that it would be equally honoring to hang the jersey with the player's name, but to continue to allow the number to be used by other players.

Olshey is a friggin' magician, nuff said.

Question is, can he continue this success long-term once he's further removed from his AAU days and has no connection to all the 30 year olds?
