It says RFA in 2018? 3yr deal with 2 non-guaranteed years?

interesting for a 22 y/o guy who played 1 year of community college...

Montero is a big guard with great versatility and ability to play three positions, including point guard. He is smooth and explosive as an athlete with a good handle. As a passer, Montero is very skilled and has good court vision. He is a good shooter, making 43.7 percent of his 3-point attempts at WCC last season. He has a lot of other weapons in his offensive arsenal, too, with the ability to fake or change directions or finger roll his way to the bucket. His versatility could make him appealing given his size. He also is a solid defender and shot blocker with good timing.
“He changed us completely when he arrived this season. We were good. He made us great. Everyone wants a guy similar to Luis’ style because he can play like a guard. He’s a better defender than people think,” WCC coach Tyrone Mushatt said last August.
One major knock on Montero is his lack of high-quality experience, as he has not played against top levels of competition. He also is, at 22, relatively advanced in age compared to many other draft prospects. It’s hard to know how he’ll develop and how he would perform against better college players, let alone NBA talent. His body strength needs improvement in order to better his defense and ability to play through contact. At this point, he can’t handle standard small forwards defensively. He is a candidate to go late in the second round, although some mocks have him getting passed over altogether.

According to draft sites he has the ability to place 1-3 and the biggest knock is his lack of weight and experience.

Could be a nice developmental piece for a couple years down the road.

Dude is very talented. I hat the comparison, but he's Qyntel Woods talented physically on the basketball floor which is good thing.I wouldn't date compare the personality or IQ though.

As long as he doesn't show his CC basketball card for his Driver's License when trying to get into a Vegas night club. He has some of Wood's skills but is not nearly as thick. Hopefully a higher Bball IQ.

He could be a real nice piece Dow the way. Right now, he's got no left and no heft, but other of those can be worked on. Pretty release and a quick one too, so could be nice eventually. Also, looks like nice handles, especially with the right.

Sorry for being a moron, but what does this mean? He gets invited to training camp?

Smart contract by Olshey, just like the one he signed Frazier to. Locks him up for enough time to evaluate and enables us to walk away if needed.

None of the other summer league players show up as under contract with the Blazers.

So I'm guessing this isn't the norm and they must see something in him?

Edit: I'm still a moron

Dude has some nice handles! I like his ankle breaker moves! The passing looks legit as well!

If only Qyntel wasn't so dumb, and hadn't been mentored by The Hoops Family.

I always wanted Livingston back before his injury. It will be neat if this guy pans out.

Just watching video now and all I have to say is I hope this news is true.

Kid can do one thing this team sorely needs. He can create his own shot

Agreed; a young team (not one contending for WCF) needs a talented lanky high risk/high reward player. Will Barton, Qyntel Woods, Travis Outlaw. None of them had very high basketball IQ (hell, Nate had to tell Travis when to drive during plays!) but they can win you games (Travis, specifically, won us several during the 2007-08 season).

I love this signing.

We didn't do anything but sign an undrafted FA to a minimum contract. Aside from taking up a roster spot, I don't see how he's really high-risk, though he could clearly be high-reward. But, I too do like this signing.

I meant on the court, not on the books. Barton was high risk/high reward on the court because you literally didn't know what he'd do.

Ultimately the Blazers like him enough to lock him up for at least a year max 3 years.

Yah and according to realgm he's the only non drafted guy on the summer league team with a contract.

They worked him out before the draft too. They obviously see something they like. Let's see if it leads anywhere.

If he pans out, the Blazers can redo the blimp in his image.

he's never played at a high level, so who knows if he can make the leap, but on paper theres a bunch to like about this guy. At 6'8 his main position has been SG but he also plays 1 and 3 regularly. He is lanky as a tetradactyl and has the with his athleticism he can theoretically cover PG's which will be huge. His shot is smooth and quick, and he has some range, however in all the clips I saw it was inside or outside, no middle ground. The man has handles and the ability to break ankles. Just from an excitement standpoint, thats some fun-ass-shit!

On the downside, looks like he's going to have a hard time not getting pushed around which is likely going to make SF a difficult spot. He never drives left, although close in he does finish with the left hinting that he could learn. Most of all, having never played at a high level, it's just impossible to know if he will be able to adjust to NBA speed, power and talent level.

But most certainly worth the risk. Should be fun to watch, and I hope he proves he's got what it takes.
