Blazers to meet with Kaman

Like others said, this signing would be a huge vote of confidence for Leonard.

So: last year we try to sign Hibbert just after picking Leonard. After a rookie season where Leonard looks at best raw and at worst completely clueless, suddenly our sights are lowered as far as Chris Fucking Kaman?

Really not sure what you guys are expecting. Olshey tried for Gortat and Jordan using the 10th pick, but Phoenix and the Clips weren't interested. Houston wants assets for Ask and the Blazers don't have them. Pek would've been another RFA wild goose chase. Talking to Kaman and maybe Dalembert seems like the best options available. With Thomas on board, playing LMA some minutes at C is reasonable. Kaman's dull but experienced.

Last season Kaman had a PER of 16.3, put up 18pts/10rebs per 36minutes. The main issue is he only played 1360 minutes over the season. I assume the low minutes are a combination of injury and poor defense (they also had Elton Brand, who put up worse stats but is a much better defender).

I guess I'd want to see how healthy he is. If we could add him and Dalembert or O'Neal for $10m combined, I guess it's something I could live with. We'd basically look a lot like the 2013 Mavs (a .500 team). Maybe a little better, considering LMA is better than Dirk at this point and Lillard is better than Collison.

I'm not quite as fascinated with the idea of "moving the needle" (which I take to mean moves that vault us into being a conference finals contender.) Mostly because I'm desperate. I don't think we keep our draft pick next year, so there's no point in tanking. We've got a mix of decent potential guys (Robinson/Leonard) mixed with two star, two good role players (Batum/Matthews) and a shitty center rotation. Some basic competence at Center may be enough to have LMA and Lillard grow together and propel this team into relevancy. Maybe a little like how the old Stockton/Malone teams would limp along with barely competent centers for about a decade. Not ideal, but there's always hope it improves with Leonard or Whithey.

The current team is only going to be a contender if Lillard evolves into an MVP-caliber player. Period. But even if he doesn't, I just want a team that's relevant after so many years of futility.

But if tanking were ever an option, the time is now. The 2014 draft is supposed to be the best since 2003. If I had to choose between being the 7th or 8th seed or trading Aldridge and tanking one more year, I would choose tanking.

Didn't we trade our pick this year? Or is it still protected?

Top 12 protected just like this last year.

Oh. Thanks for clarifying. I haven't been following the team as closely lately. I'm changing my opinion to "Easily. Swayed." I cringe at going into the deep end of the pool and trading Aldridge, but I guess I could get behind yet another tank job.

This is a misinformed take, IMO. Leonard shot 55% from the field last year, 81% from FT, and even 43% from three.

Plus, he's two years YOUNGER than Olynyk.

Fair enough. I still think Olynyk has superior range - but that wasn't what I typed.

If the right deal came along, and we could get a top five pick... it would be worth it.

This makes NO sense at all.

The best option, given the available FA centers, would be a lopsided trade using the cap to absorb the salary.

Fez; we will not sign kaman unless we have asik via trade. I just don't see it. Kaman has the same worries with injuries. Maybe not like Bynum; but he's missed significant time

Why on earth would you say that, mags? Portland is desperate and making desperate decisions to accomodate a player that doesn't want to be here

This is key. Extremely rare to win a championship without one (or two). Which is why some die hard fans are eager to move Aldridge for projects and 2014 cap space in the hopes of getting one (or two) next year.

I would not be even remotely satisfied if we signed Kaman.

IMHO, we either need to go all in to have a chance at winning enough for Aldridge, or trade him and start over with a nice young nucleus in Lillard, McCullum, Robinson, Batum. See if either white stiff can be a player and go from there. But this team now with Kaman does nothing but makes us good enough not to be bad enough to win big in the star laden 14 draft

I guess my frustration lies in the fact that I have no idea which direction they are going. Hopefully they do and it doesn't end up with us spending money on 2-3-4 tier FA's that make us average.

He would be better than Pachulia i guess, can you imagine starting Zaza?

I 100% agree. The rookie pool for 2014 would be a shame to miss if we bandaid the line-up and Aldridge isn't satisfied. I think acquisitions of Tony Allen, Asik and Maybe another big vet like Oneal or something to that nature would be a home run for this organization. All of those can happen if we play our cards right.

If we fail; then I would trade Aldridge this summer to the team of his choosing and pick up draft picks, a young up and coming player and maybe more cap relief. Tank next season and hope we get wiggins.

Why is everyone all over Wiggins? He isn't nearly the sure thing LeBron was coming out of high school. Doesn't possess the BBIQ, passing or dribbling ability of LeBron - and LeBron has NEVER lacked a motor, which I've heard Wiggins will disappear on occasion.

Its very possible Jabari Parker or James Young end up better than him.

Going to be a very, very fun college basketball season though.

Edit - Not an indictment of judgement for those in love with Wiggins, but I think this college bball season will say a lot about the draft class. Remember, Shabazz, Zeller, McAdoo, amongst others who were supposed to be the next "big" thing.

Doesn't mean because it's not a homer statement that it is incorrect either.

Ooh you played the homer card. Man I am so deflated now.

Talking to Kaman doesn't equate to signing him. If they sign him it may just be that they have other plans too. Why the hell are so many of you so eager to assume the worst?
