Nah, we had to guarantee the entire 12+ before he could be traded.
I'm not sure that is actually true. We had to guarantee a minimum of $7M to trade for RoCo.

It really depends upon if Ariza agreed to move back his guarantee date. Detroit was taking him into cap space. If Ariza agreed to adjusting the date and value to 11/22/20 for $7M - there's a chance he's cut loose. If his contract is fully guaranteed, I doubt he'll be a FA.

Everything I read about Ariza's contract was that it was 1.8 or 12.8. I never read anything about that guarantee being adjustable. Also I read on ESPN that if anyone had a team option on a contract it had to be picked up before that player could be traded so I'm going to need a link to support your very suspect theory.

There is no option on Ariza's contract. It was strictly a minimum contract guarantee for $1.8M.

Under the CBA, only guaranteed salary can be used in trades. To complete the RoCo trade - Portland had to send out a minimum of $7M of guaranteed salary.

The date when a contract becomes fully guaranteed can be negotiable (but is no later than mid-Jan). The biggest question in this theory is when Ariza's contract if fully guaranteed. We'll find out for sure in the next 2-3 days.

I have always thought of him as a SF. Why are people talking about him playing PF. Everybody last season in Houston was playing out of position right?

I mean I would hope we didn’t just sign Jones to be a $9m 3rd string SF lol

all this chatter about Covington playing PF got me curious:

last year, at Houston:

and Minny:

and 17-18 in Philly:

sure looks to me like he's better as a SF and should only be a situational PF. A steady diet of PF and it looks like he gets over-matched on defense, doesn't score with the same efficiency, and essentially ends up a net negative

@wizenheimer ...tremendous breakdown showing how much better RoCo is at SF > PF> C, and it's not even close. Knowing Stotts' penchant for going small though, this type of data will be largely ignored.

Wings are largely switchable these days. I don't really put much stock into those numbers unless the Blazers plan on playing him at C which the Rockets did a lot of (he did average 2.2 BPG though!).

There are going to be hundreds of RoCo jerseys at the Rose Garden when (if) fans come back to the arena. Fans are going to take to this guy as fast as they did for Gerald Wallace.

Sorry, Casey, can't let RoCo have #23.

Man, he reminds me of a cross between Wes and Gerald Wallace. Super excited.

Trent/Jones/Roco/Collins/Nurk needs to be our defensive lineup, with Hood switching in for Zach if the other team have more guards. Would be ridiculous if we could get Nico back also. Can you say lockdown???

Everybody understands”lockdown” in the COVID times.

Here is RoCo getting his ankles broken by Luke Babbitt.

I'm trying not to say that word too much just in case the government hears me and decides to impose one. That is a killer defensive lineup though. I'm sure we'll see it some at the end of games in defense for offense sub situations.

Stotts: "Show them that I'm just a mediocre defensive coach and not a bad one!"

But seriously, he's got a personality that is going to vibe with the rest of the team. Very well spoken, knows who he is.

Yup. I love his personality.
