HEAD COACH TERRY STOTTS
“Obviously, I think we could have played better, but you’ve got to credit Atlanta with playing a very efficient game at both ends of the court. Offensively, they got to the paint. Their three point threat is always a concern. We gave up too many points in the paint. Their big guys did a good job of mixing up pick and rolls and post ups. Defensively, they were very good. They closed out hard on our shooters. They were active. After our 8-0 start, they really picked it up and picked up the pressure. They outplayed us and they’re a good team.”
On turnovers:
“Turnovers killed us in the first half. We ended up with 18 so we had 12 in the first half. They made their run with good pressure. They got their hands on a lot of balls. I think they scored on ten straight possessions. I don’t know how many of those were contributed to by turnovers, but against a good team, you’ve got to play well at both ends. The turnovers obviously took us out of our rhythm at the offensive end.”
On three point shooting for Hawks:
“We let Korver loose a couple times. He made four of their six and took over half their threes, so on the whole we did a good job on their three point. But they do a very good job of mixing things up. They have five guys who average double figures. Whether its Horford or Millsap or Teague or Kover, they have multiple guys who are threats. They were able to take advantage of whatever the matchup was.
How concerning is points in the paint defensively:
“I’ve been concerned about points in the paint defensively all season. As long as we score, if we get them in the paint, I’m not as concerned about our points in the paint. But defensively, that is a concern. The ball was getting to the rim too much. I think the perimeter guys can guard the ball a little bit better, I think the bigs can do a better job of helping and certainly Robin not being here impacts that as well. There’s multiple reasons, but we’ve been giving up too many points in the paint. For tonight, they started off in the first quarter and they had 22 and only 2 of them were fast break so that means they were getting a lot of them in the half court, whether it was offensive rebounding or penetration or post ups. You can’t consistently give up that much in the paint.”
LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE
“Great first few minutes, then I thought they did a really good job of just taking us out of our rhythm and making us play too fast. They brought their defense and I thought they made us uncomfortable most of the night, and I thought we never really got our rhythm after that.”
On giving up points in the paint and intensity:
“A lot of turnovers for one. We got confident early, then I thought they turned it up and we didn’t match their intensity as far as defensively. They competed on both ends of the floor and they definitely made things tough for us. We’ve got to be better at dealing with teams that deny us and try to take us out of our rhythm.”
Did you think you had momentum after Lillard hit a buzzer beating 3 to end third quarter?
“I thought things were definitely going to change for us. With just who we are, I thought we had got over that hump, but they played defense the whole game and they made shots down the stretch.”
On turnovers:
“Turnovers was a big part of it. And us just not being mentally tough to fight through their ball pressure, denying us on wings and things like that. I thought we kind of gave into it tonight.”
What do you take away from this?
“You just have to learn from it. We’re a lot better than this. I thought we played pretty passively offensively as far as trying to take the fight to them. They pressured us and bodied us and made things hard for us. I don’t think we ever did it back, so I think we’ll learn from it and I know everyone in here isn’t happy about it.”
On defense tonight:
“We definitely have to guard pick and rolls better. We let the guard get to the rim. We had some miscommunication in the pick and roll, but you have games where you’re going to have these type of games. As a unit, we’ve just got to learn from it and just be better.”
