Overall I thought we play good. I thought we got real active on defense in the 2nd especially Giles Roco Jones they were extremely active at that end. Offensely we shot the ball well but to many turnovers but I could see that for 1st preseason game. Our bench was really good with 66 points and it's looks that 6 man role for Melo fits him perfect at this stage of his career. I thought rookie did some good things and also made some rookies mistake but overall I thought he was alright for his 1st game. But what saw that Stotts could go 11 deep in some type rotation when everyone is back. Majority our starters shouldn't be getting tired due to our bench being so strong. But now can we come back Sunday and backup this performance.

I like what the new additions brought to our team in terms of their defense and toughness. I know it’s one meaningless game against his former team, but Giles could get really interesting.

Being that he’s had such bad luck with his knees in the past and we’ve had such bad luck with players hurting their knees, this is bound to have some kind of weird double karma thing going on, right? He’ll be healthy and productive just to spite fate?
I'm gonna go with that. Nice take!

You're comparing minutes of Trent (a SG) with Tolliver (a PF) when our forward rotation was shot but Dame and CJ were healthy? And Trent averaged more minutes than Tolliver last season despite that. He played more minutes than Tolliver in Dec and Jan. Tolliver was even playing some center minutes for us, certainly not taking away from Trent.

So, yes, we tried to play a 6-8 guy at forward over a 6-5 at forward for a few games in November and adjusted after that.

Your narrative that we played Tolliver way more than Trent is just false.
That is the way i read it and comprehend it also.

I've got to say: D'Aaron Fox didn't do anything to make me say "yeah, it was worth passing on Luka Doncic because he wouldn't've worked well with Fox"

@THE HCP what do we got to do to get rid of the crowd noise? Let me guess? They want to cover up all the expletives the players and coaches are yelling on the court and they don't want to give up "Industry Secrets".

IMHO. Luka is one of those players that is going to change the way we look at the game. Generational talent. The funny part is he does it without any huge amount of explosive greatness. I seriously watch the guy and wonder how he does the things he does?

A couple questions for all of you who watched last night.

How many times do you think Melo might lead the team in scoring and be the player of the game this year coming off the bench?

How many times do you think he will hit a game winner or be on the court inbounding the ball for the last shot. He is so savvy about basketball and getting a good look.

My impression is this is exactly what he can and probably will do. They will keep him rested and he will give us a season of some really great moments. Another weapon Stotts will have.

Luka is a euro Larry Bird.

I liked the defense, too.
I liked the cutting to the basket.
I liked the alley-oop passes, though it's obvious we need to work on that.
I liked that we weren't overly dependent on Dame.
I liked Carmelo's new role - off the bench gunner.
It feels like Stotts has adjusted to the new player's skills.

We were on fire in the first half, which I don't think you can count on, but we outscored them the rest of the way, anyway, though they played mostly scrubs in the 2nd half.

Loved the Giles pickup and his first game. There was never any concern that he can play. However, the jury is gonna be out until he plays a whole season, regardless of what certain threadmakers seem to think.

RoCo was who we thought he was.
Jones played well and silenced some of his doubters going 2/2 from 3.
CJ1 missed 5 straight and had a turnover in one stretch, but finished overall 7-16.
Gary Trent however, showed that he's not just a spot up shooter, which was great to see.
cj2 showed that he belonged. I liked his hustle, but it's going to take him a bit to "put it all together", which is not surprising considering where he was drafted.
Ant hit an impressive 3, and also unimpressively got a 3 blocked.
Kanter thrives against other large bigs, which not every team (including Sac), has.

great take. And pretty much what i got.
Ill add one more comment:

I think the first visual shows true potential and with consistency, there is little doubt we can contend for a ring this year if we remain healthy.

Although they don't hand out trophies and awards in preseason, I think it's safe to wonder why the Kings were thinking by not making the choice to keep Giles.

I am fully aware that it's just 1 single game, but he looked really good out there. And not "playing way out of his normal" good either. Like, it didn't really appear that what he did was that unusual for him.

Granted, the Kings blow but the Blazers didn't really utilize his passing at all.
He actually played pretty well for them last year when they were literally forced to play him because of injuries, but since Vlade decided not to exercise his option last Fall, when other guys got healthy he got quite a few DNP's, our benefit and King's loss.

You hit on most of the things I wanted to say - thank
you! It’s interesting to mention we were missing 3 potential starters too (And Nurk is a starter)...

Your point on the alley oop is well taken, especially
if you consider defenses will have to sag off Dame and CJ more to defend the pass verses staying with them as they drive to the basket. It could open up more floaters and create shots at the rim which we saw last night.

It’s one preseason game but Stotts has weapons and options. Carmelo off the bench is going to cause havoc. I can’t believe we signed him for the vet
minimum... he could have made so much more elsewhere and decided to stay. When a HoF’er makes that decision you have to take notice. You must give credit to Olshey and Stotts and the player leaders for creating this culture.

It’s an exciting time to be a Blazer fan!

I've got to say: D'Aaron Fox didn't do anything to make me say "yeah, it was worth passing on Luka Doncic because he wouldn't've worked well with Fox"
At one point in the game I was thinking "Well, one reason we are doing so well is that Fox isn't playing tonight"; then later realized he was.....

Giles - 18/14/2/2, drawing charges. Holy theft Batman!

key is consistency, want to see this a few games in a row easy to be motivated when playing against team that traded him. That said he looks good extremely athletic, good help defender and smooth stroke.
Really like this squad, and love seeing us have some defenders going to need them in the west against LeBron and Kawhi/PG

I know its only one game and a preseason game at that but I saw more from Giles in one game (more potential too IMO) than I have from Zach in what 3 seasons. Zach so far has disappointed, Giles has disappointed because he has been injured so much, Zach has more playing time in the NBA even with his injuries. Zach's best rebound game for his NBA career is 10, Giles had 14 last night, Giles tied Zach's career high in points last night. I will reiterate its only ONE preseason game against the kings but I really liked what I saw, lets see what develops

It was a preseason game against the Kings though. Not really a good measuring stick. I'll point out that the Kings made Simons look like Dame out there a couple years ago.

That was the Kings end of the bench playing against our end of the bench. Pretty much apples to oranges.

Random Notes:
Jabari Parker got 6 minutes of PT in a preseason game for a mediocre team.
Our backup PG had 5 assists, yeah!!! On 5 turnovers, that's a 1:1 AST ratio (boo).

Simons played the whole game. That's not accurate. The Kings played their starters at the beginning.

Not a single starter played over 18 minutes for Sac which means that Simons played about 30 minutes against the bench and being the last game of the season and a team going nowhere, I doubt there was much motivation for them as they had likely checked out to vacation.

Simons had a great game, but let's keep it in perspective for what it is. The fact that he hasn't come close to matching that game, demonstrates where his game is at in the NBA. He's young and still has time to develop.
