First preseason game of the 2020-21 Covid-19 season.
Blazers vs Kings
The Situation-
This is a strange season and a strange start. Many things have to go right for the team to even finish it. The Blazers coming off possibly their best off season in the last 5 years have a great chance to be in the hunt at seasons end. Many fans are excited and they feel a level of confidence not felt since before Wesley Mathews went down late in the 2015 season. Lamarcus Aldridge bolted and the team got nothing for him. I have to admit I argued against trading him which obviously was a huge mistake. It left Lillard alone on an island having to lead a team of patchwork players and he did just that. They actually made the playoffs in one of the most improbable seasons this fan base has ever witnessed. However that kind of success has it's drawbacks. Expectations go through the roof and the next years 1st round out was tough to take. The success also led to a number of questionable contracts given out to players that might not have otherwise received them. Neil Olshey has felt the brunt of those criticisms and Terry Stotts has had to deal with working with what he can get instead of what he wants. To this point coach Terry Stotts has gotten more than one pass for abrupt endings to seasons. We can all assume this season he will need to find success or he will no question feel the warmth from below where he is sitting as opposed to the warmth and affection he has been showered with from the fan base as well as his players.
The Game-
This game looks to be nothing other than a simple practice game. Nurk, Collins and Hood are all out. Instead you will see Lillard, CJ, Jones, Roco, Kanter start and most likely sit after the first quarter. That is if we actually even see them that long? I would venture a guess you will see Giles taking up most of the center time. You would also expect to see plenty of Simons and Trent. They both are returning and know the offense so new players can get the feel without putting Lillard and CJ at risk. Now that Trent is essentially playing for a contract we can expect he will play like it. This whole back up PG thing people are talking about seems a bit premature. Obviously CJ plays that most of the time but Simons can and probably will step up when the need arises. Blazers are 2-3 deep at this point and have a way to fill SG if need be. I just don't see the need for all the handwringing? Blazers have been blessed with Lillard and his health. it's been the other positions that were a problem.
Hassan Whiteside is a question at this point? Kind of wondering how that will turn out for him? Seems like he better play for another contract or his NBA career could be in jeopardy? I also expect to see Melo tonight. Not huge minutes but he should be out there for a while. Obviously we won't be seeing Nassir Little but we likely will get our first look at CJ 2.0? This might be a good opportunity to watch a couple different game situations that Stotts will adjust.
Overall I am just glad that tonight I will be able to sit down and watch a Blazer Game. Plenty to be grateful for.
Go Blazers!
