I love how sports writers never have to provide sources, on like any other form of media.
Huh? The New York Times favorite source in the "anonymous <fill in blank> official".

He hasn't even asked for a trade! They got a better deal for Kidd, and it could be argued that they got a better deal for RJ. Neither of those players are as good as Carter. Kidd demanded a trade, and RJ was becoming more selfish, and his defense had deteriorated.Part of the reason for acquiring Carter is that he would presumably come relatively cheaply. The Nets are rebuilding and VC might not make sense to keep around.
Ed O.
Where are you getting the idea of hollow stats? Carter has been playing good defense, creating for others and passing, shooting well, and driving. He plays in a system where the pace is comparable to the Blazer's.Vince puts up hollow stats, kinda like what Iverson is doing in Denver. Both players aren't as effective as they used to be, not even close.
Another reason why Vince is a bad option:
08-09: $15,200,000
09-10: $16,300,000
10-11: $17,300,000

How many teams can afford him who have capspace or a big expiring?
So Kevin Garnett was less valuable in 2004, at age 28, than now, at age 32? Right. And New Jersey is still an average to below average team in the East.

After Kidd, I like Kirk Hinrich. Two years ago he was a building block for Chicago. Since then he's had a few down season. His value is pretty low right now or at least compared to what is used to be, and he's still relatively young. He really hasn't had a good group to play off of outside of Deng. He could flourish playing along side Roy, Aldridge, Oden, and Rudy.
so what are realistic options?
andre miller?
billups?
kidd?
hinrich?
How would you feel about Kirk, Nocioni and Cedric Simmons for Raef, Webster and Frye?

One comparable situation is the AI trade. The 76ers received good talent, and 2 1sts. Keep in mind, AI demanded a trade, so the pressure was on to get a deal done.
A player's value is dependent on their salary. Vince is a very good player, and I'd like to have him, but...
Vince's salary is worth more than his ability. You could make a max. salary offer for the salary he's making.
I'd rather have a YOUNG max. salary FA instead. Vince will be 32 in January.
Now, it's certainly true that many max. sal. players never become unrestricted FAs, however some do.
Teams are not knocking down the Nets doors with offers for Vince. However, many teams would like
Vince on the cheap! The Blazers are no different.
One more thought. The Nets are rebuilding and a 32 year old guard-forward whose game is based on
his athleticism is not a good fit for them. A big expiring contract, a young player, and a draft pick
is a reasonable price. That doesn't mean the Nets won't wait until the trade deadline and sell him
to the highest bidder.
He has two years after this one, I think. Team option for one more, which I doubt a team would pick up. It's really not THAT terrible, but I understand the Blazers not wanting it since it hinders the ability to resign players.
Wait, doesn't his contract expire before you have to resign most of your big players?

Looks good to me.
...no, they are not trading Miller
...no, I don't think Billups is the odd man out in Detroit
...no, not after sacrificing last season just to get him
...yes, he is the ONLY PG that could be available THIS season!!!
[S.Marion and V.Carter are the other two players that could be available THIS season]

Jason Kidd is the obvious choice, IMO.
He makes everyone on his team better. It'll be interesting too to see how Brandon's game develops next to a true PG like Jason Kidd.
We can throw them Raef, and anyone outside the obvious (including Batum and Bayless). His trade value isn't where it was and they shouldn't ask for everything and the kitchen sink. The Mavs did have a ton of interest in Petteri Koponen this summer.
I'd do Martell, Channing, Raef for Vince
Travis takes over as backup PF
PG-Bayless/Sergio/Blake
SG-Roy/Rudy
SF-Vince/Batum
PF-LMA/Trav/Randolph
C-Oden/Joel/Ike
I really like that 2nd unit..the only thing about vince is his contract..4 more years remaining..yikes
