http://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-..._quit_his_job_because_portland_is_boring.html

Nike Chief Information Officer Anthony Watson—one of the very few and first openly gay top executives in Fortune 500 companies—quit his job very suddenly December 10 for what he called "personal" reasons on Twitter. He'd arrived at Nike only this April, after a job as CIO of the European and Middle Eastern markets for Barclays bank, which left room for a lot of speculation as to the reason for his mysterious-seeming departure.

Well, according to Fortune magazine, the reasons were indeed personal. Portland, whatever its hold on the national imagination, is apparently still basically a boring backwater hick town with no social scene—provided, that is, your idea of a social scene isn't eating elevated streetside waffles and drinking really yeasty beer after a bracing hike up Dog Mountain in your best fleece with your golden retriever, who is being ridden by your pet cat, who likes bacon.

From Fortune:

Now, a source close to the situation has told Fortune the precise reason for Watson’s departure: though he was happy with his job, he was unhappy with the social scene (or lack thereof) in Portland. “As a single gay guy from London,” the source says, Watson “underestimated what it would be like. It was a culture shock. And there’s no point in having a great job if you feel unhappy with your surroundings.” The decision to leave the shoe giant crystalized for Watson while home in London with his family over the Thanksgiving break.
And to think just a few months ago, moneyed London periodical Monocle was calling us the only place worth living in the United States. But that doesn't mean we're London or Paris, apparently.

Portland is great, if you're not single with a ton of money.

There isn't a large enough Turkish and British gay community in Portland, what a hole in the ground!

Gee, Portland is not London. That is a surprise.

If he would have just asked I'm sure Darcelle would have learned an English accent for the guy.

Is England the most culturally boring country in modern times?

No matter how hard I try, I just can't bring myself to be interested in Brittish culture at all. It all just seems so bland.

The monarchy is so incredibly dull. What? You have a boring queen and king and princes and dutchesses that get dressed in fancy garb and wave to people? Snooze. There's no attractive women in England (except for Kate Middleton), and she's 100% owned.

The food is crap. What? Tea and crumpets, fish and chips? Pigeon pie? Get that sh!t outta here. Where's the excitement? Can I get a motherfuggin cinnamon roll or a juicy buffalo burger?!?

The whole culture just 'screams' lame. Everyone's fancy, refined, formal, and dull. I'm sure it's great... for boring people.

Yeah, America may be the wild, wild west with guns a blazing and such, but at least we're interesting. To close, I'd like to quote the great Winston Churchill: "I love England, but it's boring as hell here."
Thank you.

British people among world's ugliest, according to BeautifulPeople.com

Britons are among the ugliest people in the world, according to a website that only allows 'beautiful' people to join.

Fewer than one in eight British men (12 per cent) and just three in 20 women (15 per cent) who have applied to BeautifulPeople.com have been accepted as members.

Existing members of the website rate how attractive potential members are over a 48 hour provisional period, when applicants upload a recent photograph and a short personal profile.

They are rated by members of the opposite sex, who have four options to describe how attractive they think the hopeful is - 'Yes definitely', 'Hmmm yes, OK', 'Hmmm no, not really' and 'NO definitely NOT'.

Swedish men have proved the most successful applicants, with two-thirds (65 per cent) of those putting themselves forward being accepted.

Norwegian women are considered the most beautiful with more than three-quarters (76 per cent) making the grade.

I thought this thread was going to be about this place.

I once stopped in Boring, OR for lunch when running away from home at 11 years old with a friend on our bikes. (Started in Lake Oswego)

That's about all I remember of the town.

Wait... He couldn't make his C-level income and job responsibilities work for a year before pulling the ripcord because he was bored and horny? Either this guy was the shallowest man this side of Hedo's wife, or there's something else going on...

what is there to spend your money on in Portland if your single? Dating pool is small as is the nightlife

He probably missed the stench of diesel fumes and the old train tracks that are all over London. (I lived in London for a while in the late 80s).

FWIW - When I lived in the UK - I had a real hard time finding friends there as well and enjoying the social scene (no issues several years later when I moved to NYC). I believe that it takes a bit more than 1 year to really be comfortable in a new, culturally different place. I suspect that he either did not have the patience to make a real go at it or there were other, undisclosed reasons.

Well, Portland isn't a worldclass city with world class facilities for the jet setter. Its a small hipsterville city with a local chill vibe. You have to like the outdoors, you have to like divey spots and weird people.

When your rich, young and want to party that's what you seek. For someone like that, going to live in a nice house in the suburbs is like living in Prison. No EDM clubs, no bottle service, no trendy restaurants where you can have group dinners and shit like that.

There's no way in hell I could live in Portland unless I was married and settled down. There really is no real appeal there if you're single.

I'm shocked at El Prez.

Not.

You're 40-something but act like you're 18/19. You're not too far from AARP status! I'm not here to rag on you as everyone has different tastes but talking about "settling down" at your age is odd and a bit sad.

I hope when I'm your age I don't care about clubbing

If I am, someone take me out to the pasture and shoot me.

I live in LA. That's just how it is here and most big cities with options.

Men are an appreciating asset and age is not really a limiting factor. I date girls in their 20s (and 30s and 40s), big deal. Settling down, living in the burbs and having kids has no appeal to me.

Maybe it's "sad", but so are a lot of things like getting ass raped in divorce and having your manhood essentially stripped as I see so often with those who do go down "the right path".

I'm not a club goer other than the occasional Vegas weekend and even that has been curtailed the past few years, just stating where this bro is coming from. For someone looking to have fun, fuck around, get drunk, not bump into the same groups of people everywhere you go....Portland isn't that great.

Not a club goer huh? I had the impression you were. Maybe more a bar hopper (assuming there's a difference)? I'm just curious as a native Portlander, who's had his manhood stripped for 17 years.

In all honesty, regardless of why he left, I'm not sad he did. He didn't really understand the rift between business and tech and actually denied that it existed. So getting tech respect with business wasn't going to happen on his watch.

I do go to the bars/lounges/restaurants. I honestly think LA's nightlife is not that great either even though its far superior to Portland's. The daytime is great though, there's so much more to do here.

LA is a terrible place to live if you have a family though. Housing and everything is way too expensive and its not as safe if you have kids. The schools are absolute shit, there's corruption everywhere, the city is dirty as are the people, who aren't all that nice to begin with. That's where Portland is better, if you want to buy a house, BBQ in the back yard, and shit like that and live around nice neighbors.

Its all situational.

I talked with some folks who know some folks; Portland may be boring but that's not the reason...

Translation: he sexually harassed some bro at work and he "voluntarily resigned" rather than bring negative attention towards Nike. This was his way to "save face".
