Brandon Roy: don't be suprised

It would have surprised me if Roy didn't at least think about coming back. On an emotional level, this is what he's been working for for a good chunk of his life....even players who have had good and long careers, like Michael Jordan and Brett Favre, struggled to stay away. It must be even harder for someone like Roy who probably feels his career was stolen from him.

I just heard the audio from the interview on The Fan and it doesnt sound like B.Roy to me. The way the guy talks and the words he uses doesnt sound like the B.Roy I've heard 100+ times. The quick laugh sounds like him, but that could be faked.

So if he comes back, then Paul Allen will be on the hook for the contract? I mean the insurance will stop paying?

Paul Allen is already "on the hook" for Roy's contract. He was amnestied. He didn't medically retire.

We're talking about a guy that wanted to play in the playoffs 9 days after knee surgery (with the Blazers being stupid enough to let him).

I fully expect Brandon to make at run at it. The biggest obstacle is convincing a team he can play.

Personally, I don't have any doubt that Brandon will give a comeback a shot. A guy with that kind of drive isn't going to be happy being retired at 27 if there's any shot at all that he can play for a while. As an UFA, he can pick his team and his situation. Nobody's going to think twice about giving him the Vet's minimum to take a stab at it while PA pays for the rest of his salary. I suspect that there's an insurance company that's positively giddy at the idea of seeing Brandon on the court again and slipping out from paying off to the Blazers.

In other news, Lynyrd Skynyrd is planning a reunion tour this summer featuring all 5 original band members.

I think this is just his emotional attachment to bball talking. He apparently has been watching too much lebron and kobe too, this smells like diva city to me.

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman I asked Coach Mac his reaction to hearing that Brandon Roy was contemplating a comeback. He flashed a stunned look.

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
"I haven't seen that, I haven’t heard that," McMillan said of Roy's comeback thoughts. "But that would be surprising."

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
Coach Mac said he has reached out to Roy over the phone, but has not talked to him this season

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
One person who has talked to Roy – two days ago, in fact – is @JCrossover Jamal said he was as surprised as everyone to read today's report.

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
"I read it on hoopshype like everybody else," Crawford said of hearing about Roy. "I mean he’s kicked the idea around before. ... (cont)

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
Crawford cont: "But he didn’t say anything like it was for sure or anything. I read it on hoopshype."

Joe Freeman ‏ @BlazerFreeman
Crawford said Roy has not stopped working out during his "retirement," and has continued to play in pickup and other games in Seattle.

The same will and desire that pushed Roy to being "the man" for Portland and being clutch in the 4th is the same will and desire that is pushing him to come back.

It's how athletes like him operate. A lot of athletes will tell you they're willing to do whatever it takes, but don't actually get what "whatever it takes" means.

If we only had Roy's mind in Aldridge's body. :(

At the very least, some team will sign him to a 10-day contract or two, just to see if he has anything left. Hell if a team was willing to take a chance on Darius Miles, someone will surely take a chance on Brandon Roy.

I have a feeling he's coming back and actually gonna be much better than many think. He has the drive to overcome and the will to be the best. Hopefully he finds an eastern conference team. I think he would work hard to stick it to us everytime he plays against us.

Link please. I couldn't find anything definitive, just a bunch of idle speculation by fans. The only official statement I found was a comment by Chad Buchanon:

Will you still get insurance relief on Roy’s contract?
“I prefer not to comment on that one.”

I think that's all I heard to. So we had to pay regardless? Well why would we amnesty him then? That doesn't make sense. If he wanted to come back, then we could have amnestied him then.

we amnestied him to get the bigger MLE to offer Crawford

I was hugely in favor of amnestining Roy even before his retirement announcement, but I think many of you are now underrating Roy's potential impact.

Can he be a guy who plays major minutes for 82 games? No way in hell. But he could be an exceptional player for 20 games during a season and the entire playoffs. He would have many more amazing games like game 4 in the Dallas series.

The problem is he only has so many steps left in his knees and he needs far more recovery time then a normal basketball player. A contending team that wants to add him as an auxiliary piece shuffled in and out of the lineup when fully healthy would get a ton of production from him.

Now for his long term health, and ability to walk in his late 30's or early 40's I'd rather see him stay away from the game. But if he doesn't care about hobbling around like Bill Walton or being in a wheelchair in a decade I definetely think he could be an extremely valuable player on the court.

Jason Quick reported that the team would get insurance reimbursement regardless of an amnesty decision. I assume Chad or someone at the Blazers told him this but wanted it off the record.

The team isn't going to officially make statements on all financial details of their business operations.

Coming soon, the Lakers' bench unit: Steve Blake passing to Brandon Roy and Rasheed Wallace.

interesting, wonder what treatment this is..

Ya me too. Maybe something to do with stem cells? He'd have to go to Europe or Asia to get it done, but the success rate of these treatments is still very low.
