The former NBA All-Star opens up on overcoming his career-ending injuries and why he began coaching high school basketball this year.

It was only six years ago that NBA All-Star appearances and video game covers were the norm for Brandon Roy. The sixth pick of the 2006 NBA Draft was, at the beginning of this decade, a natural ad versatile scorer, and he made it all look so easy and smooth.

B-Roys team is playing in the Les Schwab Basketball Tournament in Portland shortly after Christmas. Would be cool to see how many Blazer fans are there.

He has the #2 player in the senior class, Michael Porter Jr., who has committed to Washington. There is a younger Porter brother who has also committed to Washington.

There is a 3rd player on Roy's team named P.J. Fuller who has offers form Washington, Tennessee, and Montana.

The #1 player in the Junior class, who will likely be the 1st overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, is also playing in this tournament.

His name is Marvin Bagley III. That dude will be an NBA star when it is all said and done.

There is also a younger Bagley brother with offers from at least 4 Pac-12 schools.

Other than the Bagley's, there's 4 other players that have committed to D1 schools (UCLA, Arizona State, San Diego State, Cornell).

I love it when talent chooses teaching as a path....far too often it doesn't go this way....those High School players won the lottery getting BRoy to mentor them

He said...he started his basketball career in high school and moved onto college...figured he'd start the coaching career the same way building from the ground up...also said he wasn't as interested in coaching pro players

Lets just say he doesn't really coach. He didn't stand up once (maybe it's knees) but he was pretty quiet.

Granted, he didn't really have to say much when you have the #2 senior in the country putting up 37 points and 22 rebounds in 24 minutes...

Michael Porter is gonna be a star. He's 6'9 and jumps as high when he shoots as Patty Mills and Russell Westbrook does on their jumpshots. Can handle the ball and he probably has a 40 inch vertical.

I wasn't impressed with Marvin Bagley III, who's the #1 senior in the country. He's no where near the level of Michael Porter.

Glad for Roy. He's a quality person. There is something Mickey Mouse about how the Porters committed to UW. Although I know Romar is close with the family. People are talking about it. But I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA looks into it at some point.

Union High School (Vancouver) plays for the 4A state title at 9:00 tonight on Root.

On Monday, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club named its Naismith National HS award winners and it was a sweep for the Nathan Hale Raiders out of Seattle, whose star player Michael Porter Jr and coach Brandon Roy claimed the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards, respectively.
