This isn't anywhere near the same thing as Durant going to GS and joining a 73 win team or if LeBron signed with GS too. The Lakers have been crap for 5 years. He's also 33 years old with a ton of basketball mileage. Kawhi and Cousins are both hurt right now and may never be the same. I'm not really worried about the Lakers yet.

In the dark days, LAL leadership was clueless (yes, including Jerry West)... and it didn't matter. Everyone wanted to go to the Lakers. If things somehow went south, they would just make all of their contracts end at the same time, and get the best in the league (e.g. how they got Shaq). Things changed with Durant, and later Lillard able to parley giant shoe deals while playing for small market teams - this had never been done before. Whispers among the players were that you didn't need to play for LA anymore, because salary were so enormous, they could just buy an extra house and live there in the offseason.

With Magic running the show, he decided to try the old ways, clearing space for the league's biggest stars. And now, we see that it's worked. It's a dark day for small market teams in general, and really most all other teams, too.
