Breaking News: Oregon high school student-athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness

they need to creaTe the image to gain the fan base to support the payment. The great athletes have and will continue to get paid regardless. this just sets up a bunch of youth to put time and effort into an image to try to get paid to, in the end, not get paid.
All the skills required to build an image and profit off of it are a form of education of their own, and translatable to sales and marketing careers. No offense, but I think you're taking too narrow and rigid a view on this.

No offense whatsoever.
The point of contention i have with that rebuttal is the skills you are referring to are not long term life surviving skills. They ONLY work long term if we continue down this new tech age that we already have some history showing signs its seriously screwing up our minds.
Sales and marketing is sooo far out of control that I see how many are not seeing this as another step down a wrong path. Its the times and everyone is accepting of all of this.

id like to refer anyone who thinks im off, to watch the netflix show the social dilemma.

My kids are excited about the possibility of getting funds for training they wouldn't have been able to before.

If it doesn't work out that's fine. At least they are protected from being punished if an opportunity does arise.

Lebron is debatably the greatest athlete of all time at 16.
And you are proving my point. The great players will make money regardless. The rest(90+%) will be met with a rude awaking. Why amplify the disappointment of all of the athletes who are not good enough?
Disappointment is a part of life. Everyone doesn't get a trophy.

well of course. But social media is ruthless. Kids commit suicide because they aren't accepted. This will compound that feeling of being not accepted.
We can all agree to disagree, put a pin in it and revisit in a decade.

No offense whatsoever.

So should all forms of entertainment and what not also be considered wastes of time because kids aren't learning survival and if skills? Are sports teaching these life skills? Are the arts teaching these life skills?

Apples to oranges. And yes when a child goes to school and learns an art they also take other courses.

let me counter these questions by saying so should we all just become a sellable commodity at birth? Should all of us switch from trying to learn a trade to marketing ourselves?

its a bad move. My opinion. Agree to disagree.
we are pulling ourselves further and further away from the foundational skills of survival and becoming increasingly dependent on everyone else.
Simply not a recipe for long term growth as a society.

And societies recent failures and decline confirms what i and many others feel a out how social media is derailing society. what the social dilemma and then get back to me with your questions. Ill be happy to answer once you fully digest that documentary.

It's not a question of "should we all" so much as "should we be permitted to"...and to that, I answer resoundingly yes. That's the essence of freedom.

And the same kids playing high school sports and potentially profiting off of their name are also taking classes in school. If an athlete goes home and works on a highlight package to upload to Instagram, how is that worse spent time than a kid going home and playing guitar?
It feels like you're making a blanket lumping of NIL for high schoolers in to a category with social media influences which isn't entirely the same. HCPs daughter is able to make a tiny bit or extra scratch posing in a grafletics t-shirt. I don't think this is sending her down a dangerous path. Had she taken money to do that last year, she would lose her college scholarship, which is stupid, IMO.
I imagine more often, with NIL, it will be companies trying to pay kids, not kids sending out resumes like they're job hunting.

Gosh. Not sure how else to explain how distracted our youth already is and how much more this will distract them but hey. Let kids spend all day on tablets and phones working their image up instead of paying more attention to life's lessons.
Its been going great for us so far. Not.

We are speaking of children. Not legal adults. By this premise we should be allowed to sell cigs and alcohol to a five year old. Cause you know… freedom.
Or lets let ten year olds vote.
Sorry platy that freedom argument has serious holes.

Resorting to comparing teenagers securing corporate marketing endorsements to children smoking and drinking underscores the untenability of your argument.

How so? You stated freedom for minors. There is a reason minors have limited rights. We protect them in many facets and deny them the freedom to certain things.
my point stands and provides plenty of tenability.
We protect minors in many ways. Your trying to pin me as a freedom denier is just not fair, considering what other freedoms we deny minors.

Quinn ewers is the first high schooler to get a million dollar NIL deal a year or two ago. He has 21 pictures on Instagram over the past 3 years. He was one of the best QBs in his state, which is why companies wanted to work with him.

Again, you seem to be conflating NIL with social media influencers by saying how much time they'll spend online.

NIL allows an athlete to make profits, and makes it so a school or a company can't use their image to make profits. It all came about from Ed O'BANNON being mad that EA sports could sell video games depicting he and his teammates and make millions, and the kids got nothing.

did you watch the social dilemma?

Like i said, get back to me when you do. It will explain my opinion far better than i can.
I dont need to watch a movie to carry on a discussion on the topic of NIL. I understand the dangers of the internet and social media. I am specifically discussing high school athletes, and their ability to make money off of themselves. Social media influencers is an apples to oranges debate that you seem to be conflating.

if you aren't willing to watch a show i am referring to that ties them together, then there is no discussion to be had.
I am specifically speaking of athletes that need to use social media to promote and make money off of themselves.

Kinda like saying i don't need to click on a link to know i already know…fairly pompous and know it allish stance. Im asking you to watch something that i believe ties the two together and without watching it, you say im mixing them up.
That is a very ignorant stance. Ill remember that stance when im told to check something out that might back up someone else's opinion i disagree with…

carry on were done here.

Watch this 2 hour movie or else I can't have a discussion with you. Lol. Ok.

yes dude. Its like trying to have a conversation with someone about moby dick who has never read the book.
But you keep going with your stance…

here we go again.
I offer up info for you to check out and you tell me im wrong without checking it out and then try make me out as the irrational one.
All we do is spin circles because of that bs.
Go quote someone else and harass them with your know it all stance bro.
Others and i were doing fine until you entered and quoted me.
Typical though. or better yet, back on ignore. Problem solved.

Nowhere in this discussion did I say you were wrong or irrational. I never acted like a know it all. And haven't harassed you at all. But ok.

I'm going to need you to read through this list of logical fallacies and the explanations thereof before I can discuss further the issues with your argument.

How pompous is it for someone to offer information that helps define their opinion to have the other party say i dont need to watch the show to know you are mixing things up and to discuss your opinion??

The opinion is in part derived from the show!!!

my head hurts from trying to figure out how one could have such a stance and yet consider themselves on point or rational.
i mean come on…
Its one thing to have a differing opinion, but its another when someone cites info explaining it defines their opinion, to have the other party say they don't need to look into the info to understand the others opinion is based on mixing things up.

Basically just a slap in the face….

It's not difficult for parents to limit screen time for their kids. The distractions are the fault of poor parenting skills or efforts, not lack of government restrictions.

Formal
A formal fallacy is defined as an error that can be seen within the argument's form. Every formal fallacy is a non sequitur (or, an argument where the conclusion does not follow from the premise.)

I expect more from you platy. You have insinuated my argument has a fallacy but have not defined why or how other than im comparing apples to oranges, of which i countered with real examples that follow my opinion that are, in fact, current laws.

If your opinion is informed by the movie, and you understand the content of the movie well enough for your opinion to be thusly-well-informed, then you should be able to articulate that which you learned.

I dont disagree, but how is that working out?

why don't we leave it to parents to make sure thier kids wont buy cigs?

Not true or everyone would just write their own book or movie for themselves. You can understand something without being able to put together the words to properly explain. Especially when the show also contains visuals and skits.
I can fully understand the need for a water filtering system without understanding how it works or being able to explain how it works to fill the need.
