I know what you're saying, I don't think you're saying it right though. The Knicks need a Sprewell, but they don't need Sprewell. Minus the attitude of course. The Knicks need someone who plays with tremendous heart and plays defense and actually wants to win. Watching some old Knicks games on NBA TV, I realized there were big differences from those Knicks and these Knicks right now. They were balanced, had excellent coaching along with people that wanted to win. They had Marcus Camby who played with a tremendous amount of heart, he hustled and played defense and then there was Larry Johnson. He played with heart and Sprewell used to come off the bench with energy and a desire to win.
While the Knicks could use a Sprewell-like leader on the floor, he wont necessarily be a difference maker for these Knicks. Sprewell had help with Houston, Camby etc. Marbury as I said before is a role-player. He does not have the attitude to win and it seems as if he never learns. We knew these Knicks were headed into the wrong direction when the two captains of the team were fighting! What has flawed the Knicks team this season, is a combination of lack of coaching, balance, injuries and leadership.
Right now, I would really say what the Knicks need is a healthy Allan Houston. Before you guys start to kill me, hear me out. Allan Houston was the captain and although he is not always up in your face yelling, or not playing great defense at times, he is what we needed all along. He is a veteran with experience. Many (maybe even a majority) of the Knicks losses have been due to not closing out the game properly. Houston's clutch shooting could have been used down the stretch to help us win. Houston plays with heart, man. Everyone is getting on him because he hasn't finished out the season due to rushing trying to please everyone else. Let his knee rest and let him wait and then when he is healthy in October, he can make a difference. What's the point of returning to a season that's almost over? If he gets injured in these almost meaningless games, that will give the fans, media and everyone else to get on his case yet again.
The Knicks need to make moves. They need defense, and they need a leader on the floor. I'm high on the rookies because they work hard and appear to be good leaders for this club. Marbury is not coming close to fulfilling his role as the leader and we need the young players to develop along with (hopefully) Tim Thomas and Penny Hardaway gone for a good player that is a perfect fit for us and relatively young. The Knicks need good moves, continuing to let their rookies develop and not trade them, and some balance with the youth and veterans.
