Bust a Scoot?

Don’t think anyone is actually declaring him a star at this point lol. But the Kidd and GP comparison is interesting because those guys turned it around. And as @BLAZINGGIANTS said, those guys spent multiple years in college. The passing ability is real, and Scoot seems to be shooting better from 3 as the season goes on.

It actually kind of makes sense that he’s improving from 3 quicker than scoring inside. Scoot could stand there and shoot thousands of 3s a day. Scoring inside takes multiple reps of going through the motions, knowing when to explode to the hope when the defender is on your hip, when to score coming off a PnR, etc.

For a more modern comparison, his scoring inefficiencies and struggles are similar to Ricky Rubio, but Rubio never had Scoot’s body. Another comparison in terms of body is Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe was never an AS, but he cooked us nearly every time he played us as as Sun. Did he ever NOT score over 20 against us in those games?

JKidd. GP. Rubio. Bledsoe. Scoots final form could be a combination of any of those guys.

Some(one) is comparing him Kobe, Dirk, KG, and Giannis.

I am tired of the Scoot hate and what really ticks me off is I bet a few of you are the same who were all up kissing Cronin's ass when he decided trading Dame was right and putting the franchise in the hands of a young kid. Now I am not saying it will not work out or it will but if you were one of the people being a super defender of Cronin and now are like -- Scoot is a bust then your a complete tool and you can just go BEEP off and leave this forum as far as I am concerned.

Before the draft, I posted that I would pass on Scoot. His lack of shooting ability, the fact that he hadn’t played college ball, and his near total reliance in the G-League on his quickness and strength to get to the hoop were red flags for me. It wasn’t that I thought he would be a bust. Rather, I thought he would have to be a project. I still feel the same way. I think he has the physical attributes and understanding of the game needed to be a great point guard. He just needs time to work on his game and figure out how to play at an elite NBA level.

You’re sounding like the smartest guy on the forum today. I echo all your frustrations. I’m shocked about the number of people who change up their opinion and then disregard the fact that they were wrong. Inconsistency, again, grinds my gears.

Pass on him for who?

not at 19 with no major NCAA experience, nope

Scoot has flaws and I think we all know what they are and they are mostly around shooting the ball. Those may or may not be correctable skills; his shot selection can be improved though.

I think his other major flaw is correctable though. That being that he was unprepared for how quickly and effectively actual NBA players can obstruct seemingly open passing and driving lanes. Learning the do's and do not's of that will increase his assists and decrease his turnovers.

in other words, his scoring efficiency might be a struggle for quite a while but his play-making efficiency should get better, sooner
I’ve actually been quite impressed with his progression in his shooting, particularly from 3. It’s actually improved faster than his ability to score off drives, but that’s a good thing.

Soon, when his body matures even more, he’s going to get better at driving the ball as well.

Amen has looked like ass and has a worse shot than Scoot.
Fine for you to think that. He’s also playing behind so many dudes on a team trying to compete. Cam Whitmore has looked better than Amen so far, and I’m still taking Amen with his potential over Whitmore 10/10 times.

If you don’t like Amen (who was really the only other choice), then the Scoot selection was obvious, and we would’ve been fucked either way. So either way, people shouldn’t act like there was any other choice other than Scoot, lol.

This is going to take a while. Scoot is 19. Dame was 31/32 in his last 2 seasons here and we were terrible then to, so I'm not sure expecting a 19 year old to turn it around is very realistic. This team needs more talent. It has for years. The Blazers haven't been out of the 1st round since 2019. We haven't been competitive, just good enough to keep from tearing it down. So now that has happened and it will take a bit for players that young to grow. They also need more height and more attitude.

There is still no alpha, but the one they had wasn't making them a contender, so it is a very fine line to get a super talented player (hopefully one with some size), the heart to drive the engine and the pieces around him to make it elite.

trade grant & brogdon as soon as possible, that should free scoot & sharpe

scoot & sharpe need to get a lot of shots, who cares about ayton, duop, toumani etc, lets develop these two guys who could potentially be an all-stars

Not going to happen so long as Simons is around. He will make sure he gets his.

My first choice was to trade the pick and Ant for a player who would make Dame stay. Barring that, I was hoping to trade down and get one of the Thompson brothers and a pick.

That is such a vague goal. Who would have been acceptable? OG?

What was fair value for Simons/the third pick? Supposedly we offered that package for Bridges and were turned down. There wasn't a single decent rumor out there of a player that was available that made sense for that many assets.

I am going to predict right now that in 2 years or less, people will be looking back on this thread and laughing at the people who jumped ship before even the first half of his rookie season.

Agreed... and if this forum holds true to form, those who made a silly take years prior will dig in and never admit they were wrong.

You’re playing the classic forum game of putting down a post by saying the idea is too vague or could never happen. In this case, that’s a really silly thing to do since it’s all history now. I have no idea what opportunities were available or what deals were passed on, and whether the costs were so great that the decisions were warranted. My preference was for Joe to turn current assets into a run to build a contender around Dame. I’m not pouting about the fact it didn’t work out that way. I’m not one of the over reactors around here saying Scoot is a bust. I’m expecting great things from him…in a couple of years when he figures his game out.

Impossible. Nobody can ever tell 100% where you stand on something so you can never be wrong!
