I like how we already know Scoot won't be better than Dame at 30. As if that matters or should be the barometer.

Also, since he started the year 2-24, he's shot 36-101 or 35.6%.

Nothing to be upset about.

Also fun note: Damian is shooting worse than that from 3 this year.

and that means nothing in the long run

Still can't shoot for shit otherwise though.
 
I’ll accept all the excuses for him being on this list (at #1 no less) this year. But he better not be on this list next year or we are going to seriously start worrying.

Not sure about that, but Ausar is who some have mentioned as rather having picked.
Scoot has already improved his 3pt shooting, which is easier to do because one can get a Thousand shots up a day if the work ethic is there.
Driving to the hoop in traffic is much harder to simulate, so that will take longer. More experience. As he learns opponents players’ tendencies through film and live play, he will learn when to pull up, or which side to drive, etc.
Once he gets that left hand going, look out!

I have full confidence his fg% will improve considerably. His work ethic seems to be near Dame level. And he might even be more confident than Dame was his rookie year.

Not really concerned.

As much as we've heard about his drive and work ethic, it baffles me that his left hand is so useless.

That takes time and considerable effort with coaches. My bet is they will target that this summer. Along with ball handling with both hands as well.
Remember he's 19 so there is probably 2-3 years of solid growth and improvement in store for him. As Hollinger pointed out he also doesn't jump with an upward burst as much as a guy with his strength could. Broad jump rather than High Jump.
If the Blazers are smart they will spare no expense in hiring the very best trainers available for Scoot.
 
Scoot's 3pt percentage is up to 30%, which is quite the feat considering how he started. Now the biggest problem is not his 3pt shot. Ironically, it's the one thing he was supposed to be good at. He's shooting a touch under 49% from the 0-3 range. It's not that uncommon for young players to struggle from that area. Rookie Russel Westbrook shot 48% from 0-3

He's really not good from anywhere, but I like the upward trend.
 
it's kind of crazy that Scoot's season TS% actually fell after the last game when he went 4-9 on three's. Going 7-22 on two's will do that I guess

I'd suggest a pretty simple reason why his 3 point conversion rate has improved while his 2 point conversion rate seems to have gotten worse, or at least stalled: he's assisted on 60.5% of his three's, but assisted on only 27.7% of his two's. Apparently, he's poor at walking & chewing gum at the same time. Almost all players will shoot a better percentage on assisted FG's; it's a much simpler task. The trick is shooting efficiently while cresting your own offense and those are tricks Scoot hasn't learned yet. He's a toddler at dribble-drive--->shot selection--->execution--->good efficiency.

yes, as many have noted, a big weakness is the ineffectiveness of his left hand. That is undoubtedly the header in other teams scouting report on Scoot. If he can improve that it will definitively help. But right now he's a menace to his own efficiency when he has the ball in his hands. His shot selection is poor and his shot execution is worse. His pass-selection isn't good either. The blanket covering all that is decision-making with the ball. But simulating game conditions in practice is difficult so I think the Blazers, and fans, just have to endure Scoot's trial-and-error(s) while hoping for, and expecting steady improvement

Oh, I have no doubt that he can and will work on it. I'm just surprised that he (and whatever coaches he might have had) never made it a priority when he was in high school and/or the G-League.

his handle going left is very weak as well. guessing the issues are related. he keeps going to that reverse on the left side of the rim with his right hand and misses like 2/3 of those attempts.

Lots of room to grow, but getting his finishing up to a reasonable efficiency will open up a ton for him.

Can't people just talk ffs? Other than @AldoTrapani people here want Scoot to do well. We're/they're venting, and when he plays better, we'll/they'll vent much less and be much happier and optimistic. Being a fan is frustrating. You've gotta have an outlet.

Edit: I'm not trying to be a dick @AldoTrapani. I have no problem with your position even when I disagree. You're just the perfect example sometimes.

I certainly see it that way but I'm just a fan watching. If I can see this problem there is no doubt a coach who sees this and the scouting report has to have it.

I always marveled at Dame's improvement at the rim after his first couple of seasons. I expect the same from Scoot. You can't teach his innate savviness. Once he (uses his left effectively and) figures out the seams and what works and what doesn't, he's going to be much more efficient.

To me, improving his three point shooting would have been a MUCH more difficult task. Shooting can be completely in your head. Working on his handle/finishing is more about muscle memory.

But shooting can be improved through repetition without others involvement required other than coaching staff evaluating and recommending.
Drills finishing at the rim are so much harder to replicate in practice. I think you have it backwards. :)

So you're suggesting that he was simply unaware that being able to dribble or make a layup with his left hand would be important skills to have in the NBA? That he never knew because nobody ever told him?

Not at all. Are you suggesting coaches aren’t needed to help players with proper drills to help the players get over their weaknesses?
If so why do teams have coaching/training staffs?

that’s like saying I’m weak at math but don’t need teachers to help me improve.
Self knowledge of weaknesses doesn’t typically come with answers of how to correct or all players would be perfect in every aspect, no? ;)

Of course. But let’s get real. Young guys get with older vets all the time in the offseason to help them work on deficiencies. They get with coaches and mentors to help them improve the team. teams hire specific coaches to help their players in this regard as well.
The kids is 19 and learning the nba ropes.
Give him time.

But yet I e heard over and over how we should hire defensive coaches to help. Why? Why isn’t it the players responsibility to figure it out?

there are coaches and trainers for a reason.
Again. Give him time.
