Why the BuzzFeed debacle damaged journalism and handed Trump a gift

For BuzzFeed to publish totally unsubstantiated allegations against Donald Trump -- while saying “there is serious reason to doubt the allegations” -- turns the practice of journalism on its head.

It is a perversion of what we do for a living to spew out material that may be nothing more than bogus rumors and disinformation, and to claim, as BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith does, that this is “how we see the role of reporters in 2017.”

The president-elect and his team decided yesterday to tackle this head on, to take the fight to both BuzzFeed and CNN, to make the media the issue rather than defensively deflecting the questions. And they had a big fat target.
 
The weirdest thing for me about this whole thing is that I don't even care if it's true or not... so the timing is so strange. Why after the election? I've never seen an episode of The Apprentice because I have found Donald Trump to be so unappealing for literally decades. This isn't even remotely shocking to me and I don't care what he does in the bedroom with other consenting adults. So what is the point of this??? Why would he be concerned about blackmail for something this trivial when he's on tape making derogatory remarks about women and he still won the election? Is this supposed to make the Evangelicals who voted him in go, oh crap, that really crossed the line and I was wrong?!? I'm way more concerned that I can't see his tax returns and have no idea how far in debt he is to the Russians... does anyone else, besides Sly and me, feel like they're living in that movie "Wag the Dog"?

Timing isn't really weird because this dossier has been well known for months. It's just that it finally, y'know, leaked. And there's a TON of stuff in it, not just the Golden Showers business. In fact, it serves Repubs interest that people fixate on that, and of course, it's funny, so that's what people focus on. But the whole dossier contains much more than that, and from various sources. So even if the Golden Showers business is total BS (which, for any other presidential candidate ever, you would have pretty much 99% certainty that it is) there's plenty more, and of the kind of thing that you care about. So the fact that you feel this way is very much in Trump's interest. It's a great strategy: if your opponent says a ton of bad things about you, focus on ONE claim that you can either disprove or paint as ridiculous and hope that this tarnishes ALL the oppo stuff.

Intelligence agencies have had this drivel for months. None of it is verified, and the dip shits even had the wrong names of people and corporations in it. Sorry but this is going to go nowhere.

The reason why it came out now, is because Buzzfeed is funded by a liberal media corporation, which is funded by Soros, which want Trump gone. It's propaganda.

You're making my point Rasta... it's misdirection, slight of hand... the fact that The Donald would even respond to the question is beyond bizarre. And then to say something like, I'm a germaphobe so I don't think so and the American people don't care about my tax returns... WHAT?!? I am beyond concerned about who his creditors are and how much he owes. He has a long history of being an amazing pitchman who sells his name and image to get financing to start businesses then runs them into the ground. I can't be the only one who remembers the casino financing fiasco in the 90s, thousands of employees lost their retirement.

The American firm was conducting a Trump opposition research project that was first financed by a Republican source until the funding switched to a Democratic one. The former spy said he was never told the identity of the client.

The former intelligence official went to work and contacted his network of sources in Russia and elsewhere. He soon received what he called "hair-raising" information. His sources told him, he said, that Trump had been "sexually compromised" by Russian intelligence in 2013 (when Trump was in Moscow for the Miss Universe contest) or earlier and that there was an "established exchange of information between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin of mutual benefit." He noted he was "shocked" by these allegations. By the end of June, he was sending reports of what he was finding to the American firm.

Remember when Harry Reid came out after Comey had written that letter about Clinton emails possibly being on Weiner's laptop and said that the FBI was investigating Trump? This is obviously what he meant. So let that percolate: Comey breaks all tradition and comes out a week before the election and announces that MAYBE there's some shit on Clinton on a laptop? And all the while this is going on and he says nothing?

Aren't you misrepresenting the BBC report? The report was that Jeb Bush commissioned the opposition research, not that Jeb Bush intentionally paid to have false documents created.
