I decided to flip back and forth between CNN and Fox tonight because I was curious what the two sides of the coin were saying on the eve of Biden's inauguration.

CNN is all about racism. Republicans are racists. Trump supporters are racist. Racists racists racists. They have a bunch of POC on and it's all racism, all the time. We're a country embattled by racists.

Fox is all about how the Democrats are trying to destroy the Republicans. Tucker Carlson is a rabble rouser. He talked about how the Dems are calling all Trump supporters terrorists. He talked about how the Democrats want to send Republicans to deprogramming camps. He talked about how Biden isn't going to make it through his full term and that the radical left is going to take power.

So on one side we have a news station that is telling all Democrats that Republicans and Trump supporters are evil racists. And on the other side we have a news station telling their viewers that the Democrats and to round them up and deprogram them. This borders on criminal negligence. They're expanding the divide between the parties and they're pushing people towards a point where words won't be able to solve our differences.

This is extremely concerning. My dad called me a couple weeks ago to tell me he wants to write my sister out of the will because she's a liberal. My parents were never political when I was a kid. They never talked politics. I don't know what's happening to this country but I really don't like it. It feels like we're being pushed towards war all in the name of entertainment and profit.

White privilege and racism is driving this country to civil war more than anything and it's infected our police, military, senate, congress, etc...it's like fight club out there and we need to arrest hate groups, people threatening violence and hold them accountable...all those people storming the capitol will lose the right to own a gun now...weeding those splinter hate groups out of our neighborhoods is more important than caging immigrants at the border...we need to address domestic terroism....it's been here forever...Timothy McVee's hate group was part of that insurection on the 6th....it's still alive...these are no longer just ignorant people...they are organized dangerous people....journalists were slandered over the last four years because they recorded events...not because they wanted to sell news...journalists don't go to wars and risk their lives just to sell news...I'm sick of them getting all this blame..they help stop wars....not start them
Trump and angry white people clinging to power divided this country with anti brown people rhetoric.....when most of our mass shootings and violent incidents have been from white Trump supporters....it's not a secret anymore. Fuck those people...find a journalist you trust and bookmark them is the key to news filtering....I don't listen to Tucker Carlson...life is too short for that shit

Which is certainly an exaggeration, but racism does exist and the Republican party does seem to have attracted a lot of racists lately.

And on the other side we have a news station telling their viewers that the Democrats and to round them up and deprogram them.

Which is a statement that has no basis in fact whatsoever.

So, both sides?

barfo

actually I don't watch CNN much or Fox....I watch BBC alot and Taiwan News...it doesn't take a tour guide in the media to spot racism. Trump's speeches are filled with them....the flags his supporters carry, the tshirts they wear...yeah...I'm calling the guy with the Auschwitz Tshirt a racist......reading topics of interest in print is my preference and I always consider the source....Republicans lost me completely as far as trust and really, trust is the bottom line.

Was my point not clear?

I'm sure there are racists in the Republican party, just as I'm sure there are racists in the Democratic party.

With that said, a lot of the "racists" that we see on TV supporting Trump are just people who have been told that Democrats are out to get them. Is it foolish? Sure. But at the same time, many liberals have bought so hard on the idea that anyone wearing a MAGA hat is a Nazi racist, they attack anyone wearing a red hat (ask TBPup.)

no...people who are white supremacists are afraid minorities, jews, blacks, asians, hispanics and educated people from all ethnic backgrounds are out to get them...and they aren't...when the prez is a loud bigoted racist...he's going to draw a crowd...this is on the party that turned a blind eye to a liar in power...I'm sure there are racists in all political spectrums but the republican party pretty much cornered the market

What percentage of the 70 million people who voted for Trump do you think are racists?

I'm not talking about the racists. I'm talking about the perception that all Republicans, or at least all Trump supporters, are racists.

That's a question that requires a guess but here's one that doesn't require such a stretch....how many known racists are Trump voters and republican supporters across the board? I'm guessing it's a pretty high percentage...

Never mind. I misread your post. You’re probably right. But the problem is that news channels are spreading this perception that all trump supporters are racists.

People still watch cable news? Not that I disagree, I think both are sensationalist in order to drive traffic. The more exacerbated you are at something, the more you're going to pay attention and it becomes a self reinforcing cycle. Cable news and social media are the culprit for our continued polarization. It's hard to see a solution here other than folks going to OPB/NPR and watching real news instead of cable news.

Fox vs MSNBC would be better examples as MSNBC has more liberal bias and a larger viewership than CNN

Yeah but we have crossed a line. This is becoming like wartime propaganda.
I honestly can not see how you can legally stop it from existing - the first amendment protects it. It is up to the people the reject the propaganda channels.

Either that or give every American free HBO - maybe they will stop watching the talking heads.

Perhaps, the FBI knows. However, the demonstrations on 1/6/21 prove radical elements flourish and they abide by what alleged criminal Republicans encouraged. They are Trump, Don Trump Jr., Hawley, Cruz, Tuberville, Graham, Giuliani, and the nefarious 12 that voted in favor of Trump election validity.

A lot of them are. Institutional racism is mainstream. Would you rather we sweep it under the rug?

One of the biggest problems is these channels (Fox News, CNN, MSNBC etc.) get to call themselves 'news' when they are so extremely far from that. They are entertainment pure and simple but parade themselves as news sources and most of the American public is too stupid/ignorant to know the difference between news and entertainment. You want the news, go to your local stations/papers, those people (for the most part) are just trying to get the word out and let you know what is happening around you. It makes me sick to see them lumped in with the idiot babbling talking heads like Tucker, Lemon, Maddow etc. that are only out to keep you watching their programs a little bit longer and divide the people of this country a little bit more everyday. Local news is FAR from perfect but so much better than tuning into one of the national stations.

Some of the most racist people i've known were democrats. Union dudes working in the shipyards, truck drivers, railroaders, relatives etc.
Racism know's no boundaries is what Ive learned in my almost 70 years.

Im neither party as I refused to be pushed to line up with one way of thinking on issues.

Im for compromise for the good of the people and getting things done. Im glad we have Joe as President as I think he can bridge the gap and has the nards to take on the extremist wacko's regardless.

Cracks me up when people who live in small populated areas and dont get out, profess they know what most conservatives are like.

how does one who lives fairly isolated gain such knowledge, other than through some(likely biased) media source?

Calling bullshit....
bullshit...I grew up in rural Iowa 3 miles from a town with 75 people...county had 3000.....you'd be very hard pressed to find a liberal....your stereotype that rural folks only get their politics from tv is a stretch...people have lives...join the military...meet coworkers...move...etc.....most of my pre internet life I read the Sunday paper once a week for news...actually most rural people when I grew up kept their politics to themselves but many were racists out of fear of the unknown more than anything....one gains knowledge by reading good material no matter where you find it. The idea that a tv screen is c0ntrolling all adult thought...well...one can always throw out the tv.....I did long long ago....choices...I chose Lane County as my home over places like Roseburg because I think university towns have a more educated population generally than logging towns and I like that diversity that colleges bring to an area. ...nice to actually have several asian markets in Eugene....I've lived places where Top Ramen was the only asian food available at the market.

Funny how some think what they experienced decades ago holds true for today.
Times change. Politics change. People change.
Get back to me when were able to discuss recent experiences. Not of childhood 50 years ago.
Were talking about current times and how people get information...

The denial is baffling....
I've met you and your dad...you're no spring chicken dude but go ahead...use the ageism defense......you can go back to the county I grew up in and it hasn't changed a hell of a lot....my family still lives there. People who didn't grow up in rural america shouldn't spout off about liberal or conservative politics there...walk the walk....we're having this discussion during the same era of history are we not? When you start discounting the experiences of the elders....the foundations of culture crumble....I've raised kids....I've probably got kids your age.....even we old folks have eyes and ears for sharing how we got to where we are.....that path didn't just die off 50 years ago because of the modern video game...my youngest son whom you've met is my best friend....we don't have that age gap issue for some reason...don't get me wrong....I have my stereotypes that I fully stand behind...

Richard Nixon ...Kent State...eerily similar politics decades ago....if you think Martin Luther King's speech is irrelevant today because it was decades ago....that's your loss

What are you basing this on? Where is the data? Is there some poll where they all admit to being racists? Or are we just basing this entirely on perception? That's the danger that I'm talking about and you just proved my point. You're parroting back that most of them are racist, but can you provide any evidence at all to back that up?

It's really easy to dismiss or marginalize or even fear a group of people if you can just label them as evil or bad, and that's the problem right now. These people are being painted as horrible racists, which puts everyone else in a corner because who wants to work with a racist? Who wants to understand a racist? Who wants to find a middle ground with a racist?

To me, from what I have seen, there is a massive misunderstanding of what most of the Trumpers want. The core of what they want. They're nostalgic for the old days. I know most of you grew up during a time where we were told that the USA was the BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. It was hammered in our brains. We were told we were the best at everything. Gas was cheap. A family could live off one income. They want to return to that time. The problem is that we can't return to that time. It's never coming back. I don't think it's necessarily that these people blame POC for this, they just want it to go back. They want things made in America, but they don't understand that an iPhone would be astronomical if slaves didn't make our phones! The genie is out of the bottle. The country needs to evolve. But they have people like Trump telling them that it can go back, and now they have Fox News telling them that the Democrats are out to destroy the country. It's brainwashing.

Lol again...

times change. Those who don't see that will forever be stuck in the rut of their memories...

I must come to grips though that some people reach an intellectual growth point and then hit a wall because they think they know it all and thus refuse to maintain an open mind to learn
more.

its funny how some feel being morally correct is more important than being factually correct.
what I don't want to get stuck in the rut of my memories is easy to solve........there....all gone now

I live in America as a non-white man.

I would agree with you that there are definitely racist Trump supporters. But you're going to extrapolate personal experience out to say that a lot of the 70 million people who voted for Trump are racist? What percentage of the democrats are racist?
