California Grants Law License to Immigrant

Did I say that? I don't know where you're getting that from.

I don't want to put words into Oldguy's mouth, but I think that the immigration wait is crappy for a lot of people, and yet a Software Engineer in Shanghai who wants to work at Amazon can't sidestep the visa process by just walking across the border and walking into Corporate and filling out an application. A wannabe Med student in Zimbabwe can't get on the plane until she gets a visa. Yet all someone has to do is hitch a ride into LA/SF/etc and they're in, which gives a pretty decent advantage to Mexican/Central American/South American countries (especially with Mexico's hypocritical policies on immigration)--most of whose citizens are of latino descent.

Which is why it needs to be easier for the Chinese and Zimbabwean immigrants to get here. I don't see how it takes away from my view, and I definitely don't think latinos should be punished simply because they live closer to America. You, Oldguy, and I are only Americans because of where we were born as well.

God bless him for working so hard.

Fuck him for being a lawyer.

What kept his green card application from being approved?

I think it should be easier as well. easier to gain US citizen status, maybe not easier to gain entrance to our country for that purpose (you probably disagree with the, but I digress)

It's not though, and because it's not people have to abide by the laws.

I think the speed limit should be 75, but it's not and I get a ticket if I get caught going that fast

A lot of the cases you mentioned it is easier for them to get here legally as they have a skill or are coming from money to support their stay. There is a vast difference between professional or rich immigrants and poor ones. The fact that most of the poor ones we see are latino only has to do with the proximity of those countries.

Well, technically, I've served in the military in time of war, so I've earned naturalization.
USCIS established the Naturalization at Basic Training Initiative in August 2009 with the Army to give noncitizen enlistees the opportunity to naturalize when they graduate from basic training. Under this initiative, USCIS conducts all naturalization processing including the capture of biometrics, the naturalization interview and administration of the Oath of Allegiance on the military base. Since 2009 USCIS has expanded the initiative to the Navy, Air Force, and finally to the Marine Corps in 2013, giving enlistees of all branches an equal opportunity to (in most cases) leave basic training as U.S. citizens.

For the record, I have no problem with anyone who wants to go through the biometrics, interview and oath to become a naturalized citizen. But that always keeps getting shot down when approached in Congress. :dunno:

Ever since I posted on here that my father legally immigrated to this country, joined the military and then became a citizen while in the military Mediocre Man has made repeated claims that I moderate this forum with a bias towards white people.

I guess I had never heard anyone refer to our immigration laws as inhuman and wrong except in reference to making illegal latinos, leave once they come here by breaking the law.

My bad.

So you are saying aliens should treat the immigration laws like drivers treat speed limits: ignore them unless there is a cop in sight.

I was BornInPOR, lived #alloverthedamnplace, and was "FromWA" when I started posting here. But, while I was born here, I'm not just a citizen b/c I was born here.

I think so. It wasn't my argument at stake. ;)

Why not? Because it's the law?

The law is inhumane and wrong, so fuck it.
Really? It's inhumane to think of our country as a giant family home? Borders are inhumane? Tell me what you think would happen if tomorrow the government said anyone who wanted to come here could do so immediately.

I'll tell you what would happen, it would be like a large scale version of the Walmart welfare limit fiasco that happened recently.

Just tell me where the limits are of people getting what they want just because. I only live here because I was born here, well Paris Hilton is only rich because she was born that way. NEXT time she is in Vegas I'll make sure I steal her Bentley...it's inhumane that I drive a Focus so fuck the law.

He came here an olive picker and obviously learned the language well enough to get through law school.

I have no problems with all this.

I dont think anyone has advocated throwing our immigaration doors open for everyone to come here immediatly. That is obviously as poor of a plan as building a giant fence to keep people out.

If the law is evil or inhumane what would be the alternative? As far as I know Mexico has beautiful land and natural resources....so make Mexico better.

Okay, let's go back in time and repeal NAFTA
Fine with me. So Mexico was a first rate superpower kickass country before Nafta? I get oem VW parts made in Mexico and they are quite inferior to German made parts.Fukin Nazis can't even get em to do good work.

If you don't understand the issue just say so instead of spewing hyperbole. Or at least make your hyperbole more obvious.

What's the issue there genius? Explain how a trade agreement we apparently forced on them ruined their country. Explain how this agreement from the 90s is responsible for illegal immigrants coming here by the millions. I know that we send tons of meat and corn to them now. They don't want to eat imported food? Me either. They can cut off our corn and raise the price of theirs. They just won't have enough...not my problem.

Oh wait, that's the excuse you are making. We ruined their corn prices right? So they had to move here and get free shit? Well, I never liked Nafta in the first place. I guess this kinda reinforces my point. Mexico had other resources besides the ability to grow corn. My gramps grew kickass corn in his garden, not exactly something I would want a whole economy to depend on.

That is the issue right because some of my illegal buddies said something about farming not paying anymore. Living in Vegas I have befriended more illegals than there are regular posters on this board. As a group they are generally hard working and quite hilarious. I like them almost without exception.

I don't even know where to start here, so I won't. Read up on the free trade agreements between the first world and developing countries.

I think NAFTA has been rather successful.

During its time in effect, quite a few factories have been built in Mexico providing good paying jobs. The export of US goods to Mexico has risen, which means the standard of living in Mexico has to have risen in proportion. We have a trade deficit of $50B+ with Mexico, all of that money boosts their GDP and allows them to invest. Mexico's own GDP has grown faster than the USA's since NAFTA was enacted.

I don't think a whole lot of jobs moved to Mexico as Perot warned. The "made in china" stamped on everything from clothing to electronics to durable goods seems to indicate China (and India, too) is where the bulk of manufacturing jobs are.

Mexico is just a terribly poor nation. Their GDP is about $2T and their population is 121M. That's roughly $9,700 per person, compared to about $50,000 per person in the USA. The money isn't divided evenly per person, though. A good job in most places in Mexico can pay $300/month. You try and live on that.

The wall we're building and the war on drugs has turned Mexico into a gangland. The economic incentives of the war on drugs (higher drug prices, massive profits) work in the gangs' favor. The wall and increased presence of armed border patrol has turned one of the longest peaceful borders into a battle zone.

I'm not getting the open borders thing being a disaster. For the most part, those who want to cross our borders without going through customs are getting through.

Yet, we can see from the data that 90% of Mexicans stay in Mexico. There's no rush for the border as fear mongers claim. I mean, do the math: 120M population in Mexico, 12M "illegal" immigrants total, most from Mexico.

Immigration status aside . . . we put basketball players on pedestals for their god gifted talent. Sergio came to this country probably not speaking a word of english, doing seasonal farming work and working in a grocery store . . . and manged to get himself into and graduate from law school and pass the bar exam.

In any other world people would tip their hat to a guy like this. In US, we bow to Lebron and say Sergio is a problem in our society and an injustice to American citizens.

Wrong. In any other country he would be either deported or imprisoned. He's a liar and a cheat, and because California aids and abets his criminal behaviour some far more honest and deserving soul is robbed of the opportunity to legally become an American.

He is no more admirable than any other common thief.

Most thieves are only thieves because of how shitty America is.
