Can gay people be Christian? (1 Viewer)

According to your interpretation. Others interpret it differently. If there is a God, he/she/it may know, but you can not know which interpretation is correct. I would say the Quakers (been around since the 1600's) have as much a valid interpretation as you (actually i think theirs is more valid) and they are a well respected branch of Christianity.

Looks to me like the Quakers are divided on the issue. Not sure why, not many are.
But why do you care? I suspect you come across much you can not accept in the Bible so I take it you have no intention of attempting to be Christian.

Just a sample,

Leviticus|18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.

Leviticus|18:23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither
shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it [is] confusion.

Leviticus|18:24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations
are defiled which I cast out before you:

Many Gay folks accept their fate and live as Christians, I think I even know of a Priest but I do not know for sure, because I am not going to ask
But in the end I don't think you want to be a Christian let alone accept any teachings.
So why stick a thumb in any eye? Heck, what do you want besides a tax break?

Well you are correct that I am not interested in becoming or living as a Christian. It sounds like you think I may be gay, I am not, but I have loved ones who are and I am personally offended by the abuse many LGBT'S (gay) take in our society.

As far as discussing it here, it's a discussion board and I enjoy discussing this, and many other issues. I particularly like that on this board there are plenty people with varied opinions who are willing to discuss issues close to them.

As far as the Leviticus quotes, do you eat shellfish? Do you wear cloth of mixed threads, or do you shave? Do you believe anyone who curses their father or mother should be put to death? Or should adulterers should be put to death? Leviticus talks about slaves being your property.

If you take the anti-gay Leviticus quotes to heart, I assume you also believe in slaves for Christians and death penalty for adulterers.

Shellfish are bad for the gout. No Shave, full beard., Frown on cursing Father and Mother.
But that aside, I am not a Christian, but I prefer to live among the Christians as they are a civil bunch. Jews too. Mags and ABM are Christians and they express their faith and that would be my down fall, I lack the faith and therefore do not qualify. Even though I accept and prefer the
Christian philosophy as a way of life. They are the lucky ones, I can't match their faith but I can admire it.

I spent several years in my youth rousting pirates around the South China Sea. Many were Muslim and other, but a sordid lot they were. Usually the job was to free a captive from greedy buggers. I learned to appreciate the Christian way much more than I had before while I was there. I hate to see it under frivolous attack.

I do not speak for anyone else here, but my intentions are not to attack. My intentions are simply to discuss. Except for one mild post, I stay out of the scripture thread. If you enjoy the Christian way, that is fine by me, but I do take issue with several aspects of Christanity (all religions really) and will continue to broach those topics. Mainly the subjugation of women, the disdain of non-Christians and the repudiation of gay love. Also when there is a God that laid earth at our feet, it tends to bring about actions that everything is for us to deplete. And then I also like discussing the existence of god him/herself.

got to be chain yanking here.

Of course, LGBT folks can be any faith they want to be. But personally, I don't see why they would want to. I'd rather just be a lesbian atheist humanist.

Probably because they felt the grace of Jesus Christ. It can overcome anyone if you allow it to

I know some gay folks who "felt the grace" of various god figures. Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Wiccans, you name it. Their choice. Just not mine. I prefer to be grounded in the world that is. Change it when needed, not escape it.

So can falling in love. So can free falling for the first time. But FYI, there are gay people in churches and are getting saved. So I think it's pretty powerful that a belief can sway people from being a part of an organization that has doctrine that's against being homosexual.

That's a very honest and appreciated response. I can respect your view

WARNING - I put out a theory that may be very far off. Also, it's kind of hard to understand. I never thought about it before, but this kind of makes sense. But, I am just flushing out this theory, so it is very likely that I will abandon all or part of this theory with better information.

Why do gays belong to a religion that has a doctrine opposing homosexuality? A lot of that has to do with the guilt they feel for being gay. Not that they should feel guilt, but that our culture has told them from a very young age that they are insufficient, and that their love is dirty and wrong. So over time, that becomes the norm and a lot of gay people are constantly battling that nagging guilt laid upon them. In religion, they see something that is touted as a positive in our culture, and as a bonus they are able to actually feel like they are both living their life and being adequately ashamed of their life by being involved with their religion.

It could be very possible years ago, but I think this day and age; homosexuality is actually very accepted. In fact, maybe even cool to be gay now. More and more teens are coming out of the closet and being outspoken about it. I never heard of gay folks when I went to high school:

There were lots of them when I went to High School. But it wasn't a permanently stratifying trait.

I wouldn't say it's cool to be gay, even today. The only people that think it's "cool" to be gay are gay people. There has been a huge decline in the hatred of being gay though.

I think local matters a lot also. Perhaps in Portland, Seattle or San Francisco it's totally accepted and no negative stigma is attached, but in smaller towns and in parts of the south or midwest there might still be some large negatives about coming out.

What does "coming out" mean? Please answer in light of the subject of this thread, Can gay people be Christian.

Coming out = openly gay

Does openly gay conflict with being a Christian? Or to say it directly, if you embrace being openly Gay, does it mean you reject being a Christian? Understanding there are Gay people that are Christian and even Priests in the church.

I would think different people within Christianity would answer quite differently.

Being openly divorced conflicts with being a Christian more.

To Catholics perhaps, but to the Anglican Church members, not so much.

But then sort of irrelevant as to what a "coming out" Gay thinks about being Christian.

Does someone that openly has sex before marriage reject being Christian? Yet there are arguably more than 50% that probably do it.

I think in God's eyes, the most important thing is to accept Jesus Christ as your savior. All sin is wiped completely clean. Basically, no matter the sin: you now are perfect through Christ.

Well I guess that depends on what stemmed the divorce. The bible says you can divorce for infidelity or if one doesn't share your same Christian views.

The bible that Christians use says a lot more about divorce than it does about being gay. Yes, different flavors of Christianity interpret it and assign importance to those passages differently. You're making broad generalized statements and assumptions about Christians and their beliefs concerning being gay. Why not do the same with divorce?

I hear what you think Mags. But that does not answer for Gay person, what is their intent of insisting you and I know, they are "openly Gay" and how that coincides with their intentions toward Christianity.

Matthew 19:6
"Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."

Luke 16:18
"Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.

I have not made a statement. I ask a question of what is the intent of the Gay Person. So far, I haven't see an answer. I don't think the answer has anything to do with divorce nor how benevolent GOD is in Mag's eyes.
