Not a good defender, but way better shooter and passer than Devin and Dooling.

Would do it in a heartbeat but:

1) Portland said they won't trade him
2) He will be just as unhappy here because he'll still be 3rd on the depth chart behind Dooling
3) If you move Dooling to back up SG, then you cut into CDR's development.

Rather have Javaris Crittenton. He can play both PG and SG. Can help fill in for CDR and be the 3rd PG. He will be grateful to sit on our bench compared to being stuck on Memphis' bench.

I wouldn't mind an Earl Watson type guy. A youngster riding the bench for a team like the Grizzlies is probably not the answer, but I'm open to the idea. The main thing is the Nets need someone with really good PG instincts and vision, even if he's small or has defensive or other liabilities. Nets need someone to relieve Carter the burden of having to create so much for other players while also trying to be an elite scorer.

Most teams aren't willing to deal their young backup PGs for exactly the same reason you gave: they're valuable right now. I think the Nets need a 3rd stringer as well (that was evident vs the Heat). We have no true point guard on the roster as it is. A real point guard, with good court vision and passing ability we can depend on, who is limited in all other areas would be ok. Now we need to find one.

As for the injuries, Williams is now back, Harris may be back tomorrow. Davis should be back soon as well. That leaves the Bulls, who will be without Hinrich for three months, and the Spurs, who will be without Parker for another three weeks. Bulls have Derrick Rose starting and Larry Hughes about to come back. Thabo Sefolosha can play the point as well. I don't think they will go for a point right now. Spurs could wait as well. I wouldnt be surprised to see THEM give Eddie Gill a shot. He's home by the phone.

I understand the bias in favor of Crittenton. He is a combo guard. Rodriguez is a pure point guard. Crittenton is also bigger and stronger. There's also a small age difference of two years. I just hope they go with either one of them over Gill if they decide. They could do a couple of things to get there...

--trade Ager for a second round pick and some cash to free up a spot. Nets don't have a second rounder next year and although this draft is not supposed to be very deep, it's never a bad thing. (Bobcats have the Nets second rounder, having traded for it with Seattle. Nets sent the pick to Seattle for Mikki Moore.)

--trade the Warrior pick and the TE from the Williams deal for either Crittenton or Rodriguez. I think the only thing keeping Rodriguez in Portland is his friendship with Rudy Fernandez. That could matter to the Portland front office.

There's limited financial add-on in either case and I have to think that the Nets are not in the mood to make ANY big financial moves right now. I think if a deal is cash-neutral, they do it, but if it involves a significant increase in salary, they won't...and I don't blame them.
