Cavs want to trade Brendon Haywood to us.

We get a second rounder and we help the Cavs screw the Spurs in the finals?

why not?

So we would waive Haywood, get a draft pick, and still have cap space? Or does Haywood take up our space? I don't fully understand the cap...

Can we merge this with what has already been being discussed regarding Haywood?

Here's a breakdown of the Blazers current CAP situation. -
http://www.sportstwo.com/threads/blazers-salary-cap-info.286219/

The Blazers have approximately $24,161,929 of CAP space available.

Brendan Haywood's salary next year is $10,522,500. If the Blazers picked up his contract, it would leave the Blazers with $13,639,429 of CAP space.

As far as what the Blazers could receive from Cleveland, it's pretty slim pickings. Here's a look at their future picks:

Pick Swaps:
  • 2016 — Owed second-rounder (top-55 protected) from Los Angeles Clippers (Rasual Butler, Alonzo Gee).
  • 2016 — Owe first-rounder (top-10 protected through 2018, unprotected in 2019) to Phoenix Suns (Tyler Zeller, Isaiah Thomas).
  • 2016 — Owe second-rounder to Boston Celtics (Keith Bogans).
  • 2017 — Owed second-rounder (top-55 protected) from Sacramento Kings (Marquis Daniels, Keith Bogans).
  • 2017 — Owe second-rounder to Boston Celtics (Keith Bogans).
  • 2018 — Owe second-rounder to Philadelphia 76ers (Keith Bogans), may go to Charlotte Hornets (Andrei Kirilenko, Juan Pablo Vaulet).
  • 2019 — Owed second-rounder from Minnesota Timberwolves (Tyus Jones).
  • 2019 — Owe second-rounder to New York Knicks (Dion Waiters).

You know your the worst destination in NBA for free agents when CLEVELAND has use for your cap space.

I think the idea is for Cleveland to get a TPE so they can trade it for a much more useful player.

They could just cut him to save his contract plus taxes.

The Blazers have no reason to tie up any cap space by keeping him.

It looks like his contract might not be guaranteed and the acquiring team can waive him....still trying to see if that is absolutely correct. Cavs could waive him but it doesn't help them cap wise. Creating a TPE helps them much more. I believe Portland could take him on, waive him and still have their $24+M of cap space for something else.

This could be the entire "sitting on his thumbs" move Olshey is waiting for. They release Haywood for the future seconds and then make that last big move.

Here's what I would try:
Blazers Get: CLE 2018 1st Round Pick, Rakeem Christmas, Brendan Haywood
Cavaliers Get: POR 2018 2nd Round Pick, rights to Dani Diez

Cleveland gets no salary in return which is a plus for them, we upgrade our pick in 2018, and get another young asset in Christmas.

I would wait until December to trade for Rakeem, just to make the headline writers happy.

barfo

Cleveland was not able to do much with this contract this off season and next year everyone will have cap space. They get a trade exception that is not very valuable while we give up nothing. I would lower expectations on what we get in return.

I don't think the cavs give us Christmas...but if I were Olshey I wouldn't do the deal unless they did...they seem pretty desperate

That info sure changed everyone's mind fast. We would just be a temporary holding account for an hour.

The draft pick wouldn't be 2nd round. The Cavs have no 1st round pick in 2016, and have their own 1st round pick every year after that.

Basically we pay 2 million for a pick. I don't see us spending that much for a couple of highly protected seconds.

On the other side, Cleveland could save more than just 2 million if they are I'm tax land.

I think I would only do it for a lotto protected 1st in 2018 or better

The article I read mentioned that Philly and Utah can also help them in the say way. So i am not sure we will have the upper hand in the negotiations. I really don't think we will get much in return.
