Great question. I will try to keep this as short as I can.
The machine that is the particle collider is a 27 KM ring with two pathways that accelerate particles in the opposite direction. These path ways cross at four main points and at these points various measurements and tracking of collisions take place.
The particles released are injected into the system fractions of a second apart where they are almost a single unit. They are accelerated to almost the speed of light. At full speed under normal low power runs, the light pattern is about the size of a silver dollar. Until recently the highest power runs would produce pattern about the size of a nickle. Now they have powered this thing up to the point where it appears as you see.
To break this down a bit, the more power generates more mass. At a point the particle becomes unstable. The bond created by the H-B particle breaks down and at that point the pattern becomes multiple irregular shaped mess. This instability is occurring in single and dual beam runs without collision. They are attempting to be able to control this event as to be able to determine if they are heading toward another dimension, creating some other field..or what? This is where theoretical physics is proven or disproved.
Does this help?
