This transition with a new coach and staff was never going to be seamless....we just lost an assistant coach...Chauncey should offer that spot to Terry...problem solved!

In his tenth and eleventh seasons as the head coach. Through nine seasons they had been further in the playoffs more consistently than we were with Stotts and had won games in the conference finals. I wanted Stotts fired for a long time but the only other coach that got as long of a rope without finals appearances was Sloan.

Let me reiterate:
I don't think Stotts is all that great a coach. I just think he's better than most of the board seems to think. Sure, replace him, but if you do, replace him with someone who will do what he did well just as well or better. With offense, that's going to be pretty damn hard (with this average-to-mediocre roster).

Chauncey might indeed turn into a good coach. But is he necessarily a good coach for this group? Let's see how adaptable he is. I certainly like the idea of his offense better than Stotts' - everyone wants to see the ball zip around rather than having Dame walk the ball up the court and jack up a three. But can this roster do well with that? I guess we get this season to find out how flexible they really are.

good to know. but it was a different era and sloan still had way more success both in the playoffs and regular season. the premise of stotts' departure is still that he was here way too long and his firing was long due.

Jerry Sloan was a coach with the Utah Jazz for 12 years before they made the finals in his 13th year. It was also his 9th year as a head coach and he had what was at the time the #1 or#2 PF of all time and the most prolific assist man in the NBA.

So, technically, as a coach, 2 is correct. As a head coach, Sloan does not apply.

Right... I wouldn't have given either of them that long. It's ridiculous. There are only 30 NBA head coaching jobs in the world, these guys should be held to a higher standard than both of these coaches were. I am in no way excusing keeping Stotts by pointing out that Sloan got the same extended chance. Sloan as beloved as he is in Utah, never delivered a championship.

Also the biggest thing being lost here is that in the history of the league only one other team, in one other instance showed the kind of inactivity that we showed with Stotts. Virtually unprecedented and Sloan had far more playoff wins. So the length of Stotts' tenure here coupled with his lack of performance was totally unprecedented. He's gone now though so we should all be able to move on.

Now as far as Olshey goes... his continued tenure is still inexcusable.

Do you think TS ever had the kind of roster (relative to the rest of the league) that JS had in Utah? I would argue that him making it as far as he managed with such a flawed and undermanned roster is less of an indictment of his coaching prowess than the fact that it took JS that long to get a much better roster that far.

That's just my opinion. I have no problems with replacing TS after all this time, but he never was the main problem and anyone that thinks so has his head stuck in the sand.

Correct. Do you believe the Blazers had the roster in any of the years TS was the head coach to make it to the finals?

Trying to identify the main problem isn't a hard thing to do. Olshey whether it's fair to judge him for it or not, let Aldridge walk for nothing, Olshey crippled the team with bad spending, if Stotts was a problem (which I think he was) Olshey kept that problem around way too long, and Olshey has never made the big trade or signing necessary to get Dame the help he needs. Olshey is the main problem and has been the main problem... even if Stotts was the biggest problem his employment was Olshey's responsibility so again Olshey can reasonably be considered the main problem.

That being said Stotts was so underwhelming in his nine year tenure here that you can disagree with but not completely negate the opinions of those that thought that firing Stotts was the first change that needed to be made.
 
Let give Billups time with his system. But the key is the players going buy in to his system that will be the key if Billups going have success or not. Looking of the showing so far they have long ways to go.

Now do I think they had the roster to make it past the first round in some of the years they didn't? Yeah.

I think they underachieved with Stotts.
