Chauncey Billups shares his plan to improve Portland Trail Blazers

Don't get me wrong, I can't help but get excited, but let's not kid ourselves here: EVERY new coach says two things when they're hired:
1. we're going to run more
2. we're going to play hard-nosed defense
I think the difference with Chauncey is that his resume supports his goals...he's a winner

Not as much as Magic and he was a mediocre coach, and that's putting it kindly.
Magic sucked as an analyst ...Chauncey did not...Chauncey is a natural teacher...Magic is not..Magic is more Bill Walton than Phil Jackson....he's not coaching material..Chauncey also won without the talent Magic played around...Pat Riley was a good coach

He talks a good game but you know what they say about proof of the pudding. Fingers crossed.

Almost as good as Larry Brown!

Hey, I'd be SUPER enthused for this season if we were getting 2004 LB as our coach and 2004 Chauncey as a player.
I really loved that team in Detroit...they were put togther like the Beatles....perfect harmony

Sorry, but I don’t buy it. The idea that the Blazers didn’t play defense because Stotts didn’t stress it is ridiculous. It’s much more likely that Stotts couldn’t get Lillard and McCollum to play defense, so he just made the best of it.

Stotts was the head coach. His team. Not once did he do anything significant to change the defense for the better.

I think the key is not making Dame work so hard on offense.

This. Not only will it allow him to exert more energy on defense, but with the right offensive scheme, the shots he does take should not be nearly as contested as we have seen in the past few years, allowing his shot percentage and efficiency rating to improve.

Im looking forward to this next season!

is there more Kool-ad?

When your starting backcourt, including the best player on the team, refuses to play defense, it limits what a coach can do.

That’s the coaches fault. Doesn’t happen under a coach who values it.
Let’s see if Billups does any better. I’ll take bets right now that he won’t bench Lillard for not playing defense.

He’s not gonna allow him to not play defense. But Dame will buy in, he’s not gonna challenge Billups. Terry just never gave a shit.

might be a bit of a chicken and the egg thing

maybe the key to Dame not working so hard on offense is the rest of the team proving to dame he doesn't have to work so had on offense

I mean, how many times each season have the Blazers lost leads and stalled on offense at the top of the 2nd & 4th Q's when Dame sits? That happens way too much

Yeah or when Dame collapses the defense, makes a pass, and his teammates throw up bricks.

If the offense completely rely on Dame I guess it is okay that he focuses on offense and plays less defense.
The coach rather has to look for ways that the we stay competitive if Dame sits and do not blow our lead or lose ground or if he wants him to put more effort in his defense game look for new ways to score to give Dame the opportunity share responsibilities on the offense.

That tends to happen when you don't have a backup PG.

Taking glue from CJ's hands should solve the problem. Dame will be fine.

Anyone else both really excited for the year to start but also really cautiously optimistic?

Absolutely. Really looking forward to the first games and hope for a good start (not just wins but also too see some good games from our side). And I am still open for some trades if some guys which can improve us are available for a fair price.

I love Dame Dolla but i agree with your post. Anytime i read a post on here where it says "Dame should leave this trash organization, he deserves a Championship". It makes me cringe. Why does Dame deserve a Championship? Those whom work for it deserves one for sure. Dame is a beast, a phenomenal player but there's no question that he has been lazy defensively over his career. He has a chance to be a plus defender and you saw him playing harder defense once Powell got here. Not putting that all on Dame, Stotts didn't hold them accountable. How can you really old a player accountable that makes more money than you do?

I think Chauncey has a good approach and if everyone buys in, we could absolutely build on what we have. We aren't missing a ton of pieces. Just some buy in and one more really good player.

thats what I like about the billups hire. Who’s gonna step to him? Not even Dame has his resume. He commands respect, but he still comes off as the type that would rather earn it than to throw his weight around (ie Kidd.)

Right now all I have is a gut feeling, but it’s telling me he’s gonna be a great great coach.

Perfect combination of Humility and Confidence and clout. His resume as a player speaks for itself.
