For Charlotte, sure, but the odds are longs for the Charlottes and Portlands of the NBA, anyhow. I'd argue that getting better via a blend of trades and the draft is the only way for a small market team to have a shot at a title.
Meanwhile, the Bostons and Miamis can go from terrible to titles in a year or two with the necessary cap space. It's just the way it is.
That assumes that one season of Maggette is worth the same as two seasons of Gordon plus the Pistons doing something intelligent with that cap space next year. They have some ok players on their roster, but no star. It is also not a preferred destination of free agents. I think they will regret this move dearly.
I'm willing to bet this trade will have no significant impact on the future of the NBA over the next 10 years, other than for the two teams involved. 5 years ago I would have loved to get Ben Gordon though
