On Thursday, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard completed his third full workout — complete with ball handling and shooting with the right hand.

"Everything is right on schedule," he said from his Chicago hotel room. "I'm getting my movement back and getting used to shooting with a splint on."

McCollum was averaging 5 points per game in 11 contests before the injury for Portland, which played Friday in Chicago and Saturday in Indiana to wrap up a five-game, seven-day road trip.

His return could come as early as this week. The original timetable was four weeks, which would be today, when defending NBA champion San Antonio visits the Moda Center.

"I've been through this before," he said. "This is the doctor's protocol. I don't want to risk any setbacks.

"I've got to look at the big picture. I want to be back for the long haul and not risk that for a game in December."

McCollum missed all of training camp and the first 34 games of his rookie season in 2013-14 after breaking his left foot for the second time in nine months.

The 23-year-old spent his offseason in Portland working out and again participated in the Las Vegas Summer League.

The Ohio native improved his defensive skills, particularly defending the pick-and-roll, and his shooting. He was making 45.8 percent of his 3-point attempts this season prior to the injury.

Very good news!!!

Crossing my fingers that he can be productive AND stay healthy.

Yeah me too. I think a healthy CJ is extremely important! He's our only wing, other than Dame, that can create their own shot.

Between this and the Monroe thread I'm drooling over the prospect of a Blake/CJ/Crabbe/Monroe/Kaman bench. There is ZERO reason for us not to play a 10-man rotation in that scenario, with nobody averaging over 33mpg*.

*Well, except Dame. He's good at 35mpg.

---Copying this post over to the Monroe thread, as I think it's more suitable there.

Most impressive facet of Crabbe's game has been his D. CJ might be a better offensive player, but Crabbe has him on the other end of the floor. I want both to get 10-20mpg.

I think that crabbe and CJ will be a great 2/3 combo with Blake. i would love for both of them to get 10-20 a game.
