True. I'm proud of my Indian heritage (small part from what I'm told....adopted) and studied up on it as a kid. Grew up where my local high school name was the Indians....in a very Indian part of the state. Mascots are just that....mascots. None of my Irish friends are offended by the Celtic caricature. I guess it's each to their own, but when talking to Native American Indians as a kid, no one was offended by the high school mascot.
 
They will continue to go by Indians until the have a replacement name. No Cleveland Baseball Team.

agree...I am part Indian and I dont mind at all Indians as the name, actually its a good name. Look at how many towns in Oregon are named after Indian Names/Tribes.

I really believe what matters in this situation is what the indigenous people of this land want. If all of them in this country feel like it's cool for non-indigenous owners of sports teams to profit off of their heritage then I guess it will be cool. If even some of them don't then everyone of the teams in pro sports and every college with a nickname or mascot can take the opportunity and change.

Changing the name from "Indians" was obvious seeing as how it's about the most ignorant (not offensive just stupid) way to refer to indigenous people of this land because explorers actually thought the Caribbean islands were India, then when they realized they were wrong they just said that this whole area was the "West Indies" because... well the exploring, colonizing and conquering European nations weren't big on admitting they were just wrong. Eventually the name only stuck in a small group of islands, the other islands and continental areas were renamed but for some fucking reason until like thirty years ago and in reality until the word Indian only refers to people from India we continue to label people from the other side of the fucking planet Indians when that's about as far from being accurate as possible.

So I think if indigenous people do cosign on teams and schools using their almost extinguished heritage to make a profit off of branding and merchandise... some huge percentage of the revenue (like somewhere in the nineties) generated by the use of the likeness of their people should go to them. Lets see how many teams and schools want to pay homage to "Native Americans" then.

I have direct Norwegian heritage. My grandfather is 100% Norwegian. If I'm offended by the Vikings, should they change their name?

The Seminoles have the blessing of the Seminole tribe. What other tribes think/feel is irrelevant.

As far as I know Norwegian people weren't driven out of their land and didn't go through mass and almost complete genocide. Those people whose ancestors were called Vikings are still living and thriving on the land of their endogenous ancestors.

As for the Seminoles, it's my understanding that the tribe is cool with the nickname so that shouldn't be a problem but unless a vast majority of the licensing for that name goes to the tribe (which might be the case) a reasonable person might conclude that although the tribe is fine with FSU using their name and likeness, they are being exploited.

This is where I have a problem, saying the individual groups are offended or not. It’s not about just Native Americans being offended. We should ALL be offended. IMHO.

So many seem offended by so much. Guess that is just the way it is anymore. If there is something that is actually offensive, fine. But people's random opinions are now offensive these days. Seems like we have become very soft. I'm guessing that will offend some as well.

I don't think society has become softer, it's just that in the past, people didn't really give a shit if they offended other people so there was little point in bringing it up. In other words, I don't think people are getting offended more today--I think you're just more aware of it than you would have been in, say, the 1950s.

I completely understand why something like the Redskins would be extremely offensive, but why would any version of a native American be offensive? Outside of animals, there are a lot of examples of warriors from various points in history that are mascots. The Vikings. The Trojans. The Minutemen.

And I think we have a great example of a university who has the endorsement of the local tribe in the Seminoles. So if a local university or high school or pro team approaches a local tribe and gets their endorsement, is that okay? There seems to be groups that are still hostile towards FSU even though they have the support of the local tribe.
