With Comcast, there are full serivce set ups ( the option they push) which includes a tech coming out and making the line up for wifi and installing a rented modem and making sure you have internet. I don't think they will set up Vue without charging you even more.
Then there are self install kits, where they mail yhou the modem and cables and theyt come out on their own time and make the line hot. Then its up to you tro hook it up to the weal, activate it and then set up Vue.

Then the last option is you can buy a router ands then order the self install kit, but without the rental modem.


Unless you know nothing, its best to just pay the $25 and have the self install kit mailed to you.. Or it was $25 back in the day. Probably more now.

By the way, the self install and is a pretty simple task. If you know the location has had services recently before, I agree with honki. You should save yourself some money. But if it's had satellite or something else recently. You should let them do it

This is not entirely true. They often like to send techs out so they can upsell and find bad lines to replace, etc.

I bought a modem in 2007 for $60 and used it for 7 years before upgrading. Comcast would have charged me $8-10 /month to rent their equipment. Fuck that.

I always just buy my own and tell them to fuck off. They try to get me to upgrade to the latest and greatest through them, but its all a sham. My speeds are consistenly good enough to play games online and do whatever i need to.
 
My netgear cable modem works great, bought it 3 years ago from Fry's for $40.

Also Fry's will price match Amazon.com.

If he walks in, you send him off and does nothing, more than likely your work order gets cancelled and you have to have it re entered. When it's cancelled your not charged for him coming out. Only if he completes job.

That could be the case with repair issues. Most techs are not into selling anything.

Yes, do this for sure! You don't need their equipment, and you get screwed in the long run. I went and bought a Linksys WRT for 10 bucks at Goodwill (you know those black and blue ones that they always have a million of....). I reflashed it with a better program. Now I can crank up the power and mess with other stuff. Sounds like you'd probably be better off just buying one online though.... Lol

Frontier FIOS here. They do charge for service calls, they won't install ethernet or coax outlets in the house, but the guys will leave their card with personal cell number.

If you're not real technical, this might be too much to take on. The basic router functions in the stock software are probably fine for most people.

Otherwise, this 3rd party software does kick ass.

People need to realize there are two separate components to consider. There's the cable modem (if you need one) and the router (does WiFi and ethernet for your home).

For modern cable systems, you need a modem that does DOCSIS 3.0 to get higher speeds. If you have something like FIOS, which I have here, a modem isn't required at all.

If people don't realize that they should probably have a friend do it for them, or hire someone to do it for them.....

Also, they make router modem combos obviously....

Yeh, if you plan on having it for a year or more, buy your own modem rather than paying $10 a month to rent it forever. Should be able to get it on Amazon for $80 or less, just make sure it says works for comcast.

Right, but if you just buy a modem, you don't get routing, wifi, etc.

Consider that when listening to the advice here.

So I'm gonna just pay for convenience and have the MF set it up for me. I don't want a hassle and I want my SL games and PSVUE immediately. I'll worry about buying my own router in a month. I'll rent this one for just a bit.

I paid the one time fee to have Frontier install a cable card in my TiVo. It was worth the money to get it right. Cable Card is a bit more complex to get working, and it's good to have an installer who can call into their own support system to get the settings on their end right. The guy also brought the cable card with him so I didn't have to wait the 3-5 business days for it to be delivered.

I saved $45/month for the set top boxes I returned, but it cost me $299 one time + $15/mo (+$149 one time per bedroom/den). Breaks even in about 18 months, and the quality of using the DVR and channel guides, etc., is the best there is (TiVo).

I have a PS4 so I'm going with Vue. No DVR rental needed. Just a router and a connection. Shouldn't be that much right?

I'd get at least 25MBit, higher is better depending on what you do. Watching streams on 2 TVs at once is 2x the MBit requirements. At HD, maybe 12MBits for 2 TVs.

If you have phones and tablets and can set them up to use your ComCast bandwidth while at home (over wifi), then a router with wifi is a good idea.

I have t-mobile, and my phone uses the wifi to make calls, receive calls, browse the WWW and so on. Way faster and better at all these things (while I'm home) than using cellular data/calling. WWW pages load faster, and so on.

You can buy a modem and a router w/wifi, or you can buy one device that has both.
