There's an entire chapter on Pulaski Academy's acceptance of risk in my friend Toby's book "Scorecasting".

awesome, i really enjoy stuff like this! used to have a cool book about strange coaching in the early days of football, really cool stuff

reading that i thought it was very interesting and a good way to level the playing field against bigger schools. then i watched his qb and realized, it works cause he had the best/fastest player on the field. the onside kicks are just lucky breaks, but still pretty interesting none the less.

Were I a coach I would definitely do all kinds of stuff like this. I might not be successful at it, but that's the sort of coach I'd want to be.

When I play Madden, I always go for it on 4th down and I always go for the 2 point conversion.... I'd be fired within two or three weeks in the real world.

I don't know... going for it on 4th down is fine with me. You figure you have over a 50% chance to convert. If you punt... you concede a TO and sure you have to calculate the yards you move them back... and then their return... and then the avg yards they'd make it back etc etc... but it just seems to me that going for it on 4th down is not a bad option given how often you can convert.

Now the onside kicks on the other hand... ;)

I cant stand playing against those type players.

Play the game like its meant to be played!

There's times to go for it on 4th down and then there's times where your just making a joke out of the game and are about to get so buried that you'll eventually quit the game because the score will be get so bad.

I had mentioned Jack Patera, above....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Patera

In January 1976, Patera was hired as the first head coach for the new Seattle Seahawks expansion team. Shortly after arriving, he began the difficult task of building a competitive team from the ground up. Along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Seahawks selected 39 players through the NFL expansion draft held on March 30-31, 1976. The other 26 NFL teams each protected 29 players on their rosters. Seattle and Tampa Bay alternated selections from the remaining pool of unprotected players. Acquiring quality veteran players via free agency was not an aspect of the league at that time. However, the Seahawks were awarded the 2nd overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft, a pick they used on defensive tackle Steve Niehaus.

Since he would not have the player talent to compete with other NFL teams possessing superior power, speed and finesse, Patera resorted to a wide-open gambling style offense that was centered around a passing game using lots of creative gadget plays. "I had a team that could move the ball like hell, but couldn’t stop anybody," Patera said. "So I figured that to win more ballgames we’d simply have to gamble more often. I would much rather have beaten teams on muscle and execution, but we just didn’t have the talent."

Even with the lack of talent, Patera still found a way to win games..............

well, i think that is kinda the point of this article, that it is open to interpretation

Yeah, I guess. I didnt read the article. I'm a big Chip Kelly fan, but I think he even pushes envelope sometimes on his 4th down approaches.

well, his premise is that in the high school game, his punter can only maybe gain 30 yards of field position, so if he can convert at a decent pace, it is statistically beneficial to go for it at all times. this also gives his players 4 chances to get a first down every time, and they know it in the back of their head, 3rd down isnt the last shot

he also doesnt ever return punts, as the probability of a fumble at his level is greater in his mind than the potential of a return

just read it lol

i dont think his strategies would work as well at higher levels though

Yeah, that sounds like it might work in junior high football. Thats putting a lot on a teams shoulders and screwing them over real quick though.

i believe this means high school?
Pulaski moved to No. 3 in the state AP poll and retained its No. 1 ranking in Arkansas Class 4A, a good bet to win a third state title in the last eight years. The Bruins also climbed from 99th to 75th in the Rivals Top 100 national rankings, not bad for a school with just 350 students.

yes, my quarterback jack doffon-ewe had similar measurements, and 3000 yards rushing

Yeah... so did my OL and DL. Just try to stop a 7'5, 300 lb dude that's coming through your line... YOU CAN'T!
