Sorry..
Complete freakout overreaction.
It seems each year we go through some end of the world scenario.
Ebola...Sars...Bird flu.....swine flu..trump flu...maya calendar ending...can't remember 'em all.

Wash your hands and cover your face when sneezing or coughing.
That is all.
This one is a bit different. You did not see markets hitting correction territory for Ebola or Sars. Different transference methods. This is an Airborne virus. Not sure you ever watched complete sports leagues around the world shutting down. If you think this is all just overblown then great. However there are a bunch of pretty smart people who think otherwise. This one is on a different level.

I believe 12, 000 "on any given year" is on the low side". It was over 50,000 in 2018

https://www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc-us-flu-deaths-winter/
Which was the absolute worst year on record.
Here is a link that says it can be as high as 30,000
https://www.health.com/condition/cold-flu-sinus/how-many-people-die-of-the-flu-every-year

Fact remains the Flu has a mortality rate of about .07%. These two issues do not compare in the slightest. We are talking millions of people could die from this. Saying the worst year when it was H1N1 is acceptable might be making the point.

Which one was H1N1 ? Bird flu ?
H1N1 was the Flu in 2018. It killed over 50,000 people. It's mortality rate was .07%
Bird Flu was carried by birds and they were eradicated for the most part. Different transference method.
Again if the numbers don't make sense to you or you are simply not willing to educate yourself on the matter maybe it would be best to not make false statements.

Maybe you should take Mike Pence position. Trump wants too keep the numbers low!

I agree kj...
I've just grown somewhat cynical in my old age and i can't help but feel in today's"climate" of information the truth of anything isn't as bad or good as we're told...

We have to be careful about fear mongering. It is also good to be prepared. The coronavirus has spread across the world. We are hearing of more cases daily.

So, yeah wash your hands, stay home when you are sick as you should usually do. Instead of panicking, be cautious and be ready. Don't shake hands, touch other people, rails on the bus/subway, your face, etc.

Also, take the coronavirus seriously. A lot of people are pretending it doesn't exist or isn't as bad as thought. Be open minded that it exists, and be ready for it to be as bad or worse than thought. People are dying every day, though mostly older people. But, the virus is mutating already...not a good thing.

So maybe don't believe everything you hear, but be open to the possibilty. Hope for the best, expect the worst. That is how you survive.

Nah bro. This kind of thinking is really not smart at all. 12,000 die from the flu on any given year but 31 million people get it. With a 3.4% mortality rate just do the math. That's 34,000 per Million. The number is 1,054,000 people dying in one year alone. If you can't understand the numbers please just stop making comments.
Whats even more disturbing is your 1500 number is off as well. At this point it has killed 3400 people and that number is climbing exponentially every day.
The 3.4 % number is bogus.

This interactive, constantly updated mapping of the Coronavirus by Johns Hopkins is interesting to look at

New York Governor Cuomo declares state of emergency as coronavirus cases rise to 76 after infected taxi driver walked in to Queens hospital and potentially infected 40 doctors and nurses
  • Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in New York on Saturday
  • 76 people in the state have now tested positive for coronavirus; up from the 44 confirmed on Friday
  • Disturbingly, two cases have been confirmed in the state's northeast - the first outside the NYC region - indicating signs of wider spread
  • More than 4000 people in the state have been urged to self-quarantine to prevent the spread of the disease; Cuomo says many are not following protocol
  • Nationwide, 377 people have tested positive to coronavirus, and 14 people have died

The 3.4 % number is bogus.
So your link has it at 2.3%
Okay still astronomically higher than .07%
And of course that link is about two weeks old. Try clicking on it right now. 105,820 total confirmed 3,558 dead!
OOOPs back to 3.5%

Most of those really aren't comparable. SARS was a pussy. Just over 8,000 cases, under 800 deaths in only 17 countries (at least that's what google told me). MERS is in that same category, having already been lapped several times by Covid-19 in all categories. Swine flu is probably the best comparison, although the reported mortality rate is so far much higher with Covid-19. But I suspect that will go down as more people get diagnosed.

I think the reason this is such a big story is that it's literally stretched to ever corner of the globe since the end of January, with huge clusters exploding on several continents, and the numbers are just continuing to rise, so it's all an unknown. Add to that the big stories of China's attempt to cover it up, the extreme steps China then took to contain it, the Japanese cruise ship, etc.

It will definitely infect a lot of people like the flu but I agree, the doomsday stuff seems a tad premature.

Personally I wish it turned people into running zombies. Now I'm watching the news.

in France there's 949 cases and 16 death, so 0.016% Mortality rate, with 12 of the 16 above 70 years old

So yeah i'm not worried

How do you know that?
I listen to a doc from CDC on CNN talk about numbers are skewed high at this point till they have a better count of just how many are infected, or potentially so?
He also commented that he predicts with some of the data he's seen coming in that mortality will be under 1% now.

Your 3rd grade math teacher would be proud.
Not as bad as what I heard on MSNBC the other night regarding Bloombergs $500 million could provide a million to each person and have some left over, based on current population.
It was two seasoned reporters and they both agreed with the math as it was put front and center to America.

This would be Sheldon Cooper's utopia and worst nightmare all in one.

OH MY GOD IT IS THE CORONA VIRUS!!!!!! IT HAS KILLED 1500 PEOPLE WORLD WIDE meanwhile the common flu is estimated to have killed 20000 to 52000 in the US alone. Just sayin.
This isn't Captain Tripps folks, calm down we will get a vaccine.
That seems very myopic IMO...by most accounts a vaccine won't be available for perhaps a year and considering the iffy effectiveness of similar flu vaccines we has no idea of the effectiveness %.
And when you couple that with how fast the disease has spread thus far, the numbers of infected could be quite staggering by the time any vaccine may or may not be available..

Death rates might vary between countries. We have yet to see rates in countries like Syria or Afghanistan, which have been at war for years and have almost no public health structure. So far all we have is WHO. And Trump without evidence deciding his hunch is more accurate. I will go with WHO until I see further evidence.

lol. He technically had the spelling correct, he just mixed up the letters.
Well 16/965 (or whatever it was) he got that part right. Which I have seen a lot of people leave the step there and just assume people understand it. :dunno:
I read it and immediately knew what it meant.

Sure hope so.
