We had a public health expert give a seminar at work today ( i work in big pharma). He estimated that conventional flu vaccines are about 40% effective every year. He thinks the covid ones will be about twice as effective given the right dose.

But the startling fact to me was when he said that they are preparing for over 35% of the population not wanting to take any vaccines, and that they are already funding programs to educate and inform these idiot anti-vaxxers. He said the idea of herd immunity is impossible given the low efficacy prediction and the number of morons who won't take it.

is it crazy to not want to take a rushed vaccine? Normally it takes what two years to do all the testing to make sure it’s safe? Now this one will be ready in less than a year?

I worked in drug development. The idea of rushing a vaccine without phase 3 is horrifying. It would only make sense for a treatment given to people with highly lethal disease like HIV, people who already had it and choice was take chances on drug before testing complete or die. A vaccine by definition is given to people who do not have the disease. This is a political announcement. However, Trump when not saying it will magically disappear has promised all kinds of things and never delivered.
