I like the way Oregon is trending with Covid-19.
Its terrible we've lost so many lives and half of them are in senior care centers.
My 97 year old mother in law is in one and so far they have been lucky with zero cases.
Seems every year they deal with nora virus and they go into lock down and someone always dies.

Donald Trump’s allies are turning the battle against coronavirus into a culture war by claiming that social-distancing rules are a government attack on Christianity.

The Department of Justice announced Attorney General William Barr is poised to sue states that limit the ability of parishioners to pray together in the midst of this pandemic. A number of Republican governors, including Florida’s Ron DeSantis, have exempted religious services from some or all of their states’ social-distancing rules.

And a judge recently appointed to the federal bench, who Trump may be grooming for a Supreme Court nomination, is now wildly attacking social-distancing rules as a supposedly grievous “threat” to Christian “believers.”

Justin Walker, a 38-year-old former law clerk to Brett Kavanaugh, is among the crop of young, extremely conservative lawyers Trump has installed on the federal bench. While the American Bar Association rated Walker “not qualified,” because he had less than 12 years of experience as a practicing lawyer, that did not prevent GOP senators from confirming him last year. On March 13, Mitch McConnell shut down the Senate in the midst of negotiations for the first coronavirus-relief bill and traveled back to Kentucky to attend a celebration of Walker’s investiture as a federal judge; Kavanaugh presided over the event. Then, this month, Trump nominated Walker to serve on the D.C. Circuit, the appellate court on which Kavanaugh previously sat, and a frequent source of Supreme Court nominees.

Walker repaid that faith in his career last week, in a case brought by the On Fire Christian Center against the City of Louisville and its mayor, by ruling that the church should be permitted to conduct a drive-in service, in violation of the city’s stay-at-home order.

The case was actually much ado about nothing, because, as Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern reported, Louisville had no intention of enforcing its order against the church. Rather, the police were merely being instructed to hand out information about health risks to attending parishioners and to record license-plate numbers to perform contact-tracing in the event that any attendees later became sick.

But Walker, who did not provide the city with an opportunity to provide its side of the case, had little interest in the facts. Rather, he wanted to make a very loud statement, which he did in his opinion, which opened with a declaration that “On Holy Thursday, an American Mayor criminalized the communal celebration of Easter.”

What followed was an extraordinarily tendentious screed in which Walker described the city’s public-health regulations as evocative of a dystopian novel. The judge compared Louisville’s mayor to the English persecutors of the Pilgrims, as well as to Southern plantation owners who “flogged slaves for attending prayer meetings.” Walker also managed to bring abortion and birth control into the case, decrying “government” efforts to “force religious business owners to buy pharmaceuticals they consider abortion inducing” and “conscript[ing] nuns to provide birth control.”

The relevance of these matters to Louisville’s efforts to prevent citizens from infecting themselves and others with a deadly virus was, to say the least, unclear; but the references served Walker’s apparent goal of getting the juices of right-wing religious activists flowing. Walker closed his opinion by suggesting he was vindicating the rights of “believers” to celebrate the passion that followed the “state-sponsored murder of God’s only son”; the implication that the city’s sponsorship of social-distancing rules worked a similar kind of evil was clear.

fuck that noise....

did you think you were advancing any discussion by labeling people you don't agree with as "libs and socialists". It's horseshit. Would you react objectively if I labeled people like you fascists? Endorsing the comments of like-minded people by implying others are ignorant or less-informed or just flat dumber isn't honest discussion. Believing you're one of the few adults in the room while diving deep into many of the infantile food fights here is pure contradiction. There's no reason for that kind of condescension; and I want to make it clear I can be guilty of those kinds of sins myself sometimes. When I commit them, it's fair I'm called for it and put in a penalty box....just as long as the box has been disinfected after the last occupant

I guess that's the big problem with all us keyboard warriors. I'm fairly confident if a lot of these discussions were taking place in person, the temperature would not be anywhere close to as high as it is. In fact, once a lot of us recognized where the other was coming from, some subjects would just be avoided in the interest of comity. Recognition that there would be no profit in going those directions because none of us are persuasive enough to change minds. And that way too many fists would be the last punctuation of way too many arguments. But apparently there's no cost to cyber fist-fights, other than a degradation of discussion

sorry for singling you out OB, that's probably not fair. Your "libs and socialists" comment triggered me a little. What's funny is that I am a liberal and I don't think it's a bad word. I just understand that it can be used as a pejorative, as you definitely used it there, and it's irritating. Mainly it's irritating because I've arrived at my POV in a valid manner. I would say I have spent 50 years as an adult, but I'm not sure most men ever spend a day as an adult. I know why wife doesn't think so. Neither do my 2 ex-wives or my daughter. Most of the 'debate' around here sure doesn't seem adult, whether it's about trump or about CJ's passing ability or about Stotts and his defense

what I'm trying to get at is that we likely have arrived at this point in our lives legitimately, and that maybe a little more respect should be granted, and a lot less condescension & dismissal. And again, that goes for myself, although I can assure you, when I am an asshole, I'm a thoughtful one

another thing...."socialism". It's everywhere and all of us believe in it. Socialism is not having to build your own highway when you drive to Costco. And when you get to Costco, socialism was part of the reason every single item was sitting on the shelves....or not sitting in the case of toilet paper. Socialism is in the light going on when you flip the switch. Socialism is in the flu shot you get and will be in the Covid vaccine you hopefully get in a year or so.

there is no bright fine line between the public sector and the private sector. It's an extremely broad border filled with shades of grey. If you believe in roads and bridges and electricity and fire departments...you're a socialist

sorry for the rant....so getting back to the original argument: I can't speak for anybody else, but I know what I was arguing about the stimulus. I'm not going to look up timelines, but IIRC, the first relief package the House passed came one day after trump declared a national emergency. This opened the way for the House to pass emergency legislation. They did so in less than 24 hours and the bill was narrow, targeted, and contained no noticeable partisan bullshit.

That should have been the template for the stimulus bill(s) and that's what I was arguing for. Both sides were paying major lip service to unemployment relief. Then for fuck sake, pass an emergency unemployment bill without attaching anything else. And they could have done the same for small business relief. The House set a template with the first relief bill. But the senate immediately turned the stimulus into a SOB albatross, larding all kinds of fucking fat onto the edges and into the core. Everybody knows what was happening. That's why it took them nearly 2 weeks to pass the bill and that was after at least two abortive attempts by McConnell to ram thru even worse bills than the stinking corpse of an albatross they finally passed.

The House passed that bill and got it to trump's desk in less than 24 hours. So yes, fuck the D's and the House for not doing due diligence; and fuck the R's and the senate for the corrupt bullshit they passed; and fuck them all for the toxic situation they have created over the last few decades that led to this; and fuck all of us for allowing this to happen by making out our differences to be so much more important than out agreements...

...and, fuck the Lakers

mags only follows the trump spin. He's not interested in the truth. Seems to be a common characteristic of the trumpers as they believe everything he says and repeat it ad nauseam regardless of the fact checks. It's almost cult like, lol.

Oh really? Where does it say that on the actual Articles of Impeachment? Because the last time I checked, he was impeached for Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power.

silly fella. I wasn't citing the crime, I was merely summarizing what led to his impeachment. If we're going to battle you need to keep up. Let me know when you need a break though as I sense some slowing down by you. :bgrin:

Oh, the little details... So, he wasn’t impeached for holding funds to Ukraine. Glad we cleared that up.

As a student of history you know that Nixon didn't step down because of the Watergate break in, it was because of the coverup of the Watergate break in.

A lib is a liberal. A socialist is a socialist. Making those statements is not derogatory unless your skin is thinner than a jellyfish....

oh c'mon man...I don't believe that claim of innocence for a second....you didn't say "libs and socialists" in a neutral fashion.

I bolded one thing that really stood out. You say this to me, when you have people like Calvin Natt running around here saying anyone who supports trump should get the virus and he hopes they die and all that crap. Do you think that is respectful? Or maybe you should rethink the direction of this post and address it to those who actually are disrespectful and not direct it to those who are fed up with the disrespect?

I would honestly like a solid reply to this. Why are you singling me out for this statement when I read every day so much more disrespectful statements from others on here???????????

I mean really....

apparently, you didn't read my post because I explained exactly why I "singled you out". If you read my post, you wouldn't be asking all those questions. I definitely condemned disrespectful posts and I specifically did not exempt myself from the condemnation. Nobody is innocent here

Yep. But during the Nixon impeachment inquiry, the House challenged the "executive privilege" and won. Also, that impeachment vote was bi-partisan, this one wasn't. In fact, 2 democrats sided with the Republicans on the vote against impeachment.

I am! I'm totally innocent. If we had a forum wedding I could wear white.

a puppy dry-humping legs may be innocent, for a while. You haven't been a puppy since before Monica Lewinski was in knee pads

besides that, there's no way you'd look good in white:

and? Bottom line

spin it anyway you want but the results are the same as he was impeached

psst, that was abuse of power.
Whoops, Abuse of Power isn't an impeachable offense. If they charged him for for "Bribery" then you have an argument.

Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution requires a president to commit “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors”

Thern thats your problem. I absolutely did. How else could I have put it? Leftists I suppose? It was absolutely in neutral fashion. I even sat and thought, "well republicans are conservatives and dems are liberals and some are socialists". Bernie is a Socialist.

There are Bernie supporters here.

I don't know what to say other than you are flat out wrong....And you are also wrong in trying to tell me you know how I meant it more than I do.

I DID read your post and you even said not trying to single me out, but yet you did. And you dont to others who do far worse.

I never claimed innocence. I have maintained an openly guilty mind and have stated as such on several occasions. I'm the ONLY one who has apologized to anyone here for feeling I went too far and am the ONLY one who has taken responsibility. So when you try to say I claim innocence... go preach to someone else... like those who are not owning up to their disrespectful behavior...

I am soo sick of being the one singled out as the one causing issues when its soo clearly apparent, there are soo many others doing and making far worse statements that do not further the discussion.

Send a letter to congress. Seems you think you know more than congress.

Abuse of power falls under other high crimes and misdemeanors....keep on spinning.

Thousands and thousands of people are dying because of an awful virus that has people scared and anxious. Millions of people are losing jobs, kids are missing school and families can’t be near each other. Hospital and the medical community are risking their lives to take care of these people.

and today Trump listed off corporations and CEOs, telling everyone what a great job he is doing, berating reporters. Yesterday he said his power is “total”. A month ago he said he takes no responsibility.

We are truly in deep shit. To be so blind of the situation, or to be in such denial, is scary. We have a flat out cult running the country.

Yet the republicans bitched that the other side was trying to weasel stuff into the bill.

How you support these people is beyond me. You got fooled if you think they care about the american people. Start thinking for yourself.

(This is to those it pertains, not to the quoted)

Where is your condemnation of these posts?

So yest my feeling of persecution is substantiated, justified and your statement has been shown to be inaccurate. You made a post two posts after Stren's and You said nothing to him. You said nothing about Cup being disrespectful to Mags that both Body and I quoted different instances of. You didn't condemn Calvin Natt for wishing people dead. And you certainly haven't said a thing to Cup when he tries to troll me on a daily basis.

So where is your impartiality? Or are you just skirting the facts to try to make me look bad again?

So was Bill Clinton

and? Why is Bill Clinto relevant? Besides one was caught lying to congress about getting a blow job and the other one, well, just lies about everything. I know which one is worse in my book.

So true. Why was OJ relevant?

I'm not seeing anything in those posts that is insulting to you personally.

Calvin Natt I did PM him last night and asked him to stop with the personal insults.
