Rep. Ron Wright of Arlington dies after 18-day battle with COVID-19
Elected to a second term in November, the Republican had been fighting lung cancer. He becomes the first member of Congress to die from coronavirus.

Rep. Ron Wright of Arlington died Sunday night less than three weeks after contracting COVID-19. He was 67.

His family and a spokesperson confirmed Wright’s death due to the coronavirus Monday morning. The Republican congressman, who was reelected in November, also had been battling lung cancer.

Wright is the first member of Congress to die of COVID-19.


“Congressman Wright will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue,” according to a statement released by Wright’s office. “Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn. As friends, family, and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end. Despite years of painful, sometimes debilitating treatment for cancer, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him, or to offer fatherly advice.”

Wright announced on Jan. 21 that he had tested positive “after coming in contact with an individual with the virus last week.” He had been in quarantine since Jan. 15 and said he would remain in quarantine until doctors cleared him to return to work.

“I am experiencing minor symptoms, but overall, I feel okay and will continue working for the people of the 6th District from home this week,” he said at the time in a statement issued by his office. “I encourage everyone to keep following CDC guidelines and want to thank all the medical professionals on the front lines who fight this virus head-on every single day.”

The quarantine began two days after the House voted to impeach then-president Donald Trump. Wright voted against the impeachment, as did all but 10 Republicans, none from Texas.

That was his final House vote, congressional records show.

Wright, given his age and health complications, stayed away from Washington for stretches at a time over the last 11 months, House voting records show. While congressional leaders have taken steps to stop COVID-19′s spread, several lawmakers have still contracted the virus.

To date, three other Texans have tested positive for the coronavirus: Reps. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands; Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler; and Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth. All three of those Texans recovered after reporting mild symptoms.


Wright had not received a vaccination, unlike many House members. But Wright had just received the OK from his doctors to get the two-shot program before he contracted COVID-19, his office had said, and was planning to do so in the near future.

Although the pandemic had not claimed the life of any other sitting member of Congress, Rep.-elect Luke Letlow, a Louisiana Republican, died from coronavirus complications just five days before he would have been sworn in.

But we just had a Superbowl with countless "smaller" parties in people's homes I'm sure, and national sports talk radio praising the NFL for getting through the season. Even though tons of players and staff got Covid and for sure infected thousands of others that we don't know about...smh

It helps to trace bad batches of the vaccine and to provide accurate data on side effects. Having nothing to complain about is actually helpful information.

The second shot had zero effect on me other than to make my arm a tiny bit sore for a few days.

How did you qualify for the Covid-19 shot? Do you have an underlying health concern? Are you a doctor or do you just play one on TV?
 
Typical inefficient State of Oregon bureaucracy, cannot roll out a reasonable sign up for seniors 80 and over, left many hanging for hours. Very typical. Hell, the governor probably thought they were all done, like she thought all senior facilities were when in fact she didn't know and was winging it. What a mess...
