Labeled swabs in photo are for quality control, not a sign COVID-19 tests are fixed

More than a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation is still spreading online about the tests used to diagnose whether someone has the infection.

The latest claim comes in the form of a photo circulating on Instagram, which appears to show two packages of SARS-CoV-2 antigen test swabs, with one labeled as a "positive control swab" and the other a "negative control swab." (Antigen tests detect the presence of a specific viral antigen, which implies current viral infection.)

"Nothing to see here folks!" reads the post’s caption. "It’s perfectly NORMAL to have PCR TESTS that are labelled ‘Positive’ and ‘Negative!’ There’s no conspiracy involved at all! They aren’t trying to manipulate and control the test results in any way! Trust your leaders."

Text overlaid along the bottom of the photo says: "Picture taken secretly by a nurse on shift. Name not mentioned for obvious reasons."

The image is authentic, but it doesn’t prove what the user claims. The key word in the label is "control," because the swabs seen are used for quality control to make sure the test is working correctly, not for patient testing. It says so in the instructions.

The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

The test packages come from ACON Laboratories, a medical equipment company based in San Diego. Among the different types of COVID-19 tests it sells, ACON Laboratories has an antigen rapid test called the "Flowflex."

The Flowflex test’s documentation lists the materials provided in each kit, which includes both positive and negative control swabs, as well as the nasal swabs used for patient testing.

The test’s instruction manual says that the control swabs "should be used to ensure that the test cassette and that the test procedure is performed correctly."

Other medical equipment companies, like Abbott, produce tests that include control swabs for the same reason.

In the documentation for its Panbio COVID-19 antigen rapid test kit, for example, Abbott also lists the negative and positive control swabs and specifies they are not to be used for "specimen collection" and are for "control use only."

Our ruling
An Instagram post suggests that COVID-19 tests are fixed because a photo shows two packages of antigen testing kits with the labels "positive control swab" and "negative control swab."

This is a misinterpretation of the labels. Positive and negative control swabs are routinely included in testing kits for quality control — to ensure that the test is working correctly — not for patient testing.

We rate it False.

COVID Roundup: New Numbers, New Border Restrictions, Herd Immunity Questions

Last Friday, Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir announced new regulations at Iceland’s border. This will entail taking samples from arrivals to Iceland, tourists and Icelandic residents alike, including those who have been vaccinated. Results from these screenings can be expected within 48 hours, and people will not be required to quarantine while awaiting results. This will go into effect on and from August 16th.

Vaccinations
The Delta variant wave is prompting a ramping up and expansion of vaccinations. Laugardalshöll will open again for mass vaccinations on August 16th, and will specifically aim for giving vaccinations to previous Janssen recipients, children aged 12 to 15, and frontline workers in both health care and schools.

While children in this age group are expected to receive their shots on the 23rd and 24th, this happens to be the same day that many grade schools will be opening again. This has been criticised as poorly timed, and there are also increasing calls to give the fully vaccinated a third shot to boost the immune system further.

Herd immunity
While about 90% of the Icelandic population is fully vaccinated, the continued presence of the Delta variant has many wondering if the coronavirus is going to be a part of Iceland’s everyday reality in the long term. Amongst them is chief epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason. Yesterday morning, he told radio station Bylgjan that achieving herd immunity against the virus may mean letting the virus spread while protecting the most vulnerable in the country.

These comments provoked a strong response across social media, and Þórólfur walked those statements back by the evening, saying that he was misunderstood. He emphasised that it is still the goal of Icelandic authorities to create herd immunity, but that this would be best done by increasing restrictions at the border, bring in new domestic restrictions, and provide more vaccination booster shots for those already vaccinated. A clearer plan of action can therefore likely be expected in the days and weeks to come.

I don’t recall ever having to inject anything into my body to walk into a bar, get a drivers license, or any of the other poorly thought parallels people are trying to draw in relation to the covid vaccine. These are false equivalencies. There are no medical procedures necessary to acquire a driver license or go to a bar. People don’t give a shit about a card, it’s the injection that they are opposed to. Amazing I actually have to explain this.
It's been 100 years since we had a pandemic like this. I'm assuming you're less than 101 years old, less than 121 years old if you're going in a bar.

Going back to previous post. When lab tests are run, along with samples being tested, technician runs positive and negative controls. This is quality control. Positive control should show positive and negative control negative. If they don't either test kit is defective or technician screwed up; either way, test is rerun with new kit. This is so basic I find it astonishing a nurse wouldn't know. There's no way to verify if the photo ABM posted came from a nurse. Anonymous social media posts citing anonymous sources are not reliable sources of information.

This is too good

It's amazing that people who don't trust the government think the vaccine is unsafe because a government agency hasn't said it's fully approved.

The shots DO work: US sees a 240% rise in COVID cases in last three weeks with average of 108,000 per day - but number of daily deaths are HALF of what they were before vaccines
  • On Sunday, the U.S. recorded 124,234 new COVID-19 cases with a seven-day rolling average of 108,624, the third consecutive day surpassing 100,000 and a 240% increase from 31,919 reported three weeks ago
  • The last time COVID-19 cases were trending upward with a daily average of 100,000 was in early November 2020, when vaccines weren't yet available
  • At the time, virus-related fatalities were also rising with an average of 1,100 per day
  • By comparison, 111 deaths were recorded on Sunday with a seven-day rolling average of 508, meaning deaths are about half of what they were during the last surge with 68% of the eligible population vaccinated
  • States are reporting record-high numbers of COVID-19 cases and hospitals say they are filling up due to the surge of patients
  • In Florida, some hospitals are sending COVID-19 patients home with oxygen and a monitor to free beds for sicker people
  • Officials in Houston, Texas, have run out of beds and have had to airlift patients hundreds of miles away, one even as far as North Dakota

I wonder if there were polio anti vaxxers back in the day or if they just were relieved they could avoid getting polio and end it forever? Glad we didn’t have so much nutjob dumbasses back then. I do enjoy that Reddit Hermancain award thread though. So good. Legit brings me happiness. I do not have and will not have one shred of sympathy for anti vaxxers who are sitting in hospitals hoping to not die.

I legit think this guy jerks off when unvaccinated people get covid. I’ve never seen a single person, not even on Twitter and larger platforms with this level of contempt for another group of humans. It’s a little over the top. Actually, it’s A LOT over the fucking top. And he can’t get enough of it.

Openly cheerleading for people to die is not mentally stable behavior. It’s narcissistic and twisted. At this point I just think covid is his personal excuse to get his nut from the dehumanizing of other people.

There were smallpox anti-vaxxers, there were polio anti-vaxxers, there were/are measles anti-vaxxers... there's no learning from history in the antivax world.

It’s been a year and a half. Hundreds of millions vaccinated without issue. Anti vaxxers are scumbags. I don’t “want” anyone to die. But when those people do, the Facebook anti mask anti vax people, oh well. Zero sympathy.

Hundreds of millions vaccinated without issue.
There have been many reported side effects. See VAERS, there are already more adverse incidents with this vaccine in 6 months than there have been for all other vaccines combined for the last 20 years. Those aren’t awesome numbers and they don’t suggest all skepticism should be cast aside. You may feel the benefits outweigh the risks and that’s fine. But it isn’t your, or anyone else’s place to risk assess for other people.

4.46 BILLION doses worldwide. So yes. Hundreds of millions administered without incident.
