COVID & the NBA (1 Viewer)

I think we're all getting a little complacent because Omicron isn't as deadly. It's not; but it is more widespread than any of the Covid strains and when there's such a large pool of infection is when new variants arise. The next variant might not be as 'forgiving' as Omicron (and people are still dying from it)

Just get your shots. Nobody really cares anymore at this point. It’s to the point where we’re all like “call us when the shots don’t work whatsover for a variant”

Tomorrow is our last day of mandatory daily testing. Interesting with things going so bad the league is taking this stance. I will be glad to not have to test everyday for sure though.

I think the league have been a pretty good barometer of where things are going. The surge seems to flatten and I suspect that based on what they see internally, in the country and what we have seen elsewhere in the world - they believe that cases and issues are going to reduce soon. Hope they are right.

I also think they are looking at the fact that no player or coach has reportedly become significantly sick from Omicron. All have been mild cases with limited or no symptoms.

Good. Because there’s nothing else you can do after getting your shots. Life needs to move on. Call me when a variant comes that the vaccine doesn’t work for. Till then glad the league is moving on from all this arbitrary bullshit

If people are vaccinated just treat it like we do with the measles... you have your vaccine and thats it. When have you taken a Measles tests? It has killed way more people than covid.

If people aren't vaccinated make them do daily testing or whatever.

We're coming up on the third year of this, at some point we all got to move on.

I got it right after new years, am boosted, and it was like a very minor cold. 4 years ago would've thought nothing of it and gone to work every day. My 75 year old dad got it and had same minor symptoms. It was a very big pain in the ass for me as I was traveling internationally. All the restrictions and social anxiety we have in kids growing up now is worse than the virus.

Plus to wizenheimer point, we haven't heard of a singe vaccinated player, coach, or staff with significant symptoms. Time to move on from this.

Yup it’s all bullshit at this point. Holla at me when a variant comes out the vaccine doesn’t work for. Then panic

My rate on the road is a lot more, so I will lose a ton of money because of this, but you’re right, at least I’m working.

Curious. Is your rate more to offset the travel expenditures or do they also cover that? Do you get a food perdium and hotel paid for etc, or do they pay you and then expect you to cover yourself?

Always wondered if players get all of theirs travel expenses paid for on top of their 7-8 figure salaries or if they pay those themselves.

And is it different for players vs staff?

You have loss no family members to this have you?
I don't know anybody who is vaccinated and boosted who had any significant trouble from this. The only people I know who have really gotten sick at all have been unvaccinated.

My daughter thats been vax & boosted is just getting over it and out of quarantine. She's 44 very fit and did get hit with fever, sore throat, typical flu stuff. The biggest issue was lack of energy for about a week.

I said get your shots. What are you going to do beyond that. Time to move on. Like I said call me when the vaccine doesn’t work for a new variant.

I’ll take that as a NO. If you had, you’d have a tad bit different attitude toward this bro. Death changes peoples views.

yeah. To dismiss and try and minimize the real impacts of Covid just because Omicron is less deadly than Delta if fucking idiotic

a guy I knew...he was not a close friend, but still a friend died from Omicron about 3 weeks ago. He was 61 and was in good shape with no underlying conditions. He just couldn't fight off the infection

think about that...the forecast is for 62,000 deaths in just a month. That's more than twice as many people who die in an average flu season. That's in one month

more than that though, is because of all the idiot anti-vaxxers and lies about vaccines and masks, and how contagious Omicron is, Covid has the perfect conditions to create new variant(s). And it's 50-50 if the new variant will be more contagious or more deadly. We'll be in dark days if a new variant is as contagious as Omicron but as deadly as the original Covid. And that's possible

How/ why yours is not a full time role is baffling to me? Is this the case around the league or unique to the Blazers?

Friend of mine died three weeks ago too. She had no other health issues. She was vaccinated but not boostered. We’re still shocked. She was texting us saying it was awful but she was starting to feel better and then we get the call from her sister.

Was Nas vaccinated when he got sick?

it's not that rare for people to be really ill for days, then have a few hours where they seem to have recovered...then die a few hours later. The "surge before death" syndrome. It's real and it happens a often, not just with Covid

I had never heard of that before.

Nah. In our industry everybody is freelance. I have actually lost A LOT of work in the past 5 years with networks hiring guys to do my job full time for about the 1/4 of the pay. People trip over themselves to work for HBO/ESPN/Golf Channel etc. So instead of flying me out and putting me up, they can have 3 people do what I do for dirt cheap back home in the studio. With the way technology is going, it is going to happen more and more. As far as the NBA goes, there are only about 10 teams who travel a person that does what I do. usually they just hire somebody locally in the town they are playing in. Here from producer around the league that say how hard it is. You go into Houston and those local guys might not even know anything about their team, let alone basketball. They might do baseball or other sports, and just so happen to be free that day. Definitely a sink or swim biz.

Definitely a crazy way to make a living. Not much stability, but the payoff is good. Compensated very well when you do work. For example, I worked over 3 weeks in Japan for the Olympics. Went home with nothing on my schedule for a couple weeks, when I get a call to see if I want to work the 9-Ball Billiards championships for 7 days. I was free and was on a plane back east the next morning. Made more money doing that for one week than 3 weeks in Japan. So a gig I got literally 18 hours before paid me more than something i had been booked for 2 years. Strange business indeed.

Would you throw a couple sheckles for a lackey?
