OT Crapping on the Lakers

Wow. What a jerk. Even Kobe fought for his team to the end. I know LeBron is hurt but you gotta support your teammates in bad times.
Except when you're publicly yelling about how crappy they and management are and need to be traded, like Kobe did in 07.

He was fighting for the team to get better and not nonchalantly walking out the door.
You specifically said, "you gotta support your teammates in bad times." My point was that Kobe didn't.

Speaking of crapping on the Lakers, Hollinger took a gigantic dump on the piss and purple in the athletic today. After pointing out in fine detail just how dreadful they have been this season, he says this about their chances of getting better in the off-season:

Free agency? Ha. The Lakers already are way over the cap, and stand at next year’s projected luxury tax line even with just seven players under contract. They will have the taxpayer midlevel exception available, and minimum exceptions after that.

Realistically, the Lakers can get a halfway decent third guard who falls through the free agency cracks with their taxpayer MLE, much like they did a year ago with Nunn. And then they’re taking fliers on minimum contract guys, hopefully, this time with an average age below 90. Overall, free agency will be a roster Band-Aid at best.

The draft? Ha. Bartered those picks years ago to get Davis. The Lakers’ first-round pick is likely headed to the Pelicans, after Memphis acquired the pick last June with top-10 protection because it seemed unfathomable that the Lakers could finish with one of the league’s 10 worst records. Over the last few weeks, that latter detail became more interesting than the Lakers’ actual basketball team. (L.A’s record is the eighth-worst right now; Memphis will be praying for three teams to hurl the Lakers at the lottery). Oh, their second-round pick is gone, too, although L.A. could buy its way into a pick in the 40s. The Lakers will have a first-round pick in 2023 but can’t trade it; the first one they can put in a deal is not until 2027. Speaking of which …

Trades? Ha. With what? How do you do a trade if you have nobody under contract, no cap space and no draft picks? The only trade “assets” in the Lakers’ quiver are Talen Horton-Tucker, signed to a bloated $10 million-a-year deal with a 2023 player option (in a related story, he is a Klutch client), and the non-guaranteed minimum deal of Reaves.

Sign-and-trades? Ha. Not gonna happen. With the Lakers being at the tax line already, a sign-and-trade for another player will be virtually impossible since it would take the Lakers over the apron.

He says Westbrook’s toxic contract can only be traded for John Wall’s equally awful one, or maybe to OKC if Presti is willing in exchange for some future draft picks.

He says they could possibly target Cronin’s favorite, Jerami Grant, for Horton-Tucker, Kendrick Nunn and “lightly protected” first round picks in 2027 and 2029.

In other words, the Lakers are screwed unless they want to admit defeat and blow it up.

This article made my day. Misery loves company.

What is not mentioned here is that in 2023 the Pelicans have the right to swap picks with the Lakers. LOL.

Yeah the Lakers are screwed. If I was running them I'd trade Davis and Bron. Sucks for them they don't have their own draft picks though, if they could find a way for NO to give back some picks in the trade or as a 3rd team that could make sense.

A haul for Davis and Bron could be pretty good. Although I expect they will not do that, instead go with some band aid fixes that fail, and then explore trading both of them during next season.

LeBron would be doing the Lakers a big favor if he requested a trade.

And yes, I would want him to come play with Dame.

I don't see any chance LeBron request a trade now; he'd rather stay in LA with his house, business, family, etc for the whole summer. Then stay for training camp and the start of the season. If it is still a mess at that time; ask for a trade mid season and he only has to get a hotel a few months in wherever other city. A 38 year old LeBron with multiple rings and established family is very different than a mid 20's player desperate for a title.

Although if the Lakers decide its in their interest to move on and trade LeBron he might be fine with it. Especially if it is someone he has a good friendship and respect for like Dame. But I don't see how the Lakers would go do that now, and then try to sell tickets to celebrities for the chance to watch Nassir Little.

The Lakers 2022 draft pick.
The pelicans got this unprotected from the Anthony Davis trade.
They traded it top 10 protected to the Memphis grizzlies in the Jonas Valanciunas trade.
If the pick ends up in the top 10, New Orleans keeps the pick and Memphis gets Cleveland's 2022 2nd round pick and New Orleans' 2025 2nd round pick.

Again they won a championship less than 2 years ago but our garbage franchise is trying to make fun of them. We have our own problems
Yep. Highly ironic to see Blazer fans mocking the Lakers. They may be down now, but they usually figure a way out of it. Portland, on the other hand, never does.

He didn’t walk out on his team. He wanted a better team. Didn’t call out individual players though.

Does LeBron have no trade clause?

Jeeze did Joe Cronin negotiate for Memphis too?

Here is the whole trade, which happened just before the 2021 draft:
Steven Adams and Eric Bledsoe to the Memphis Grizzlies for center Jonas Valanciunas.

New Orleans swapped their 10th pick in the 2021 draft for Memphis's 17th pick. (edit: Memphis took Ziaire Williams at 10, and New Orleans took Trey Murphy at 17).

New Orleans swapped their #40 pick in the 2021 draft for Memphis's #51 pick.

And the mentioned top-10 protected 2022 first-round pick from the Lakers.

Here is a comment on bealestreetbears.com about that Lakers pick (seems to be from September):
"In a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis traded for the possibility of getting the Lakers’ 2022 first-round pick. What’s the caveat, you ask? If the pick lands anywhere in the top ten, this pick will go to New Orleans. To put it even more simply, the Grizzlies will get this pick."
Not!
